Did anyone here this story or the motive behind this move? I am in the transportation industry so it directly effects how we do business....does anyone else think this is dangerous?

i think that it should have been investigated a lot more and i support legislation that would not allow foreign companies to control american ports

I was wondering when this would finally get to tww

Great. Tens of cruise ships carrying thousands go out of Terminal Island daily, which is adjacent to where cargo is shipped into South Florida. In addition, MacArthur Causeway, one of the largest throughfares connecting Miami to Miami Beach is 100 yards away, often clogged with hundreds of cars. As if it hasn't been a security risk already. Especially considering less than 1% of those containers are checked. I'm sure Philly and Baltimore are even worse.

Now we are selling the port to the United Arab Emirates.

Makes perfect sense. Brilliant.

with enough oversight, it wouldn't be a problem

not sure if we can provide enough oversight, though.

Former Secretary of Homeland Defense Tom Ridge calls for more explanation, transparency over the matter:

I'm not affraid of this. I personally don't care, in fact.

If they think they can do a better job of managing those ports and make us all a little money then let them try. It isn't the port authorities job to keep terrorists out it is the FBI and CIA (NSA?).

ok, not just westerners, but

Quote :
"The UAE is a highly cosmopolitan environment and a large part of the population are non-UAE nationals, primarily a mix of other Arab nationals, Asians and Europeans. 80% of Dubai's population is comprised of expatriates with Europeans and Asians accounting for approximately 70% of households. "

http://www.datadubai.com/population.htm

so a company based in dubai does not necesarily mean our ports will be run by arabs, much less terrorists.

[Edited on February 21, 2006 at 12:06 AM. Reason : i guess i'd still prefer the ports be run by americans though]

Jesus

Fucking

Christ.

Does anybody on this worthless peice of shit website bother to do anything remotely akin to research? Running a shipyard is not the same as securing a ship yard, which by the fucking way, is done by the Port Authority of that region.

So, for the mass idiot out there who is thinking DURKA DURRRR TOWLZHEADZ DOOK OUR DUBBBZ, Know that a lot of shipyards are run by foreign, European, companies including this one.

Fucking morons.

The lot of you.

yes, but other foreign countries don't recognize the taliban as a legitmate government

and the research i did had security experts talking about the importance of cooperation from port owners when it comes to security

i dont trust an arab country's screening process for workers, something that is very important when you inspect less than 10%

Uhm

I'm pretty sure they screen as well as any other shipyard company not to mention they still have to uphold US regulations and laws.

I mean really, just shut the fuck up already. I know you're an idiot and all but christ at least me funny and say "I DONT LIKE DURRR TOWLZ HEADZ".

sounds like the assumption is being made that they'll be hiring an entirely arab workforce to work these ports.

I think that is extremely unlikely.

More than likely ownership will change, the workforce will more than likely stay the same.

^^ yeah, thats ehy i said less than 10% dumbass
what do you think our other ports are doing?

^i don't think they will go out tomorrow and hire an all arab workforce, i do think that they have less invested interest in making sure that the people they do hire wont help get things through ports.

why would they not what traffic through the port? It's a company right? Their aim is to make money?

How do these companies make the $$? Is it a flat contract with the city to manage the port? Do they make cash on like docking or freight fees? It would seem like they'd be interested in improving the traffic of the port if they want to make the green... not impede it.

clarification:
less than 10% of cargo is inspected, so its very important that the people working at the dock are as trustworthy as possible. i dont trust foreign countries with making sure none of their employees are helping illegal things get through ports.

especially foreign countries that
1. house the banks that % of the money used for 9/11 were located at
2. produced 2 of the 9/11 hijackers
3. was the country that sponsored several of the 9/11 hijacker's entry to the USA
and
4. still recognizes the Taliban as the true afghan leadership

I don't really have a problem with them taking over, but in regards to Bush,

His one and only veto will be to allow an oil exporter to own some of our ports? With American sentiments towards this type of country plummeting? Terrible move.

Massive spending increases? No veto. Not letting the UAE get their way? WHOMG VETO!

Actually, most of my travel is done by walking.

I go through about a tank of gas a month, and that's driving an SUV.

And yes I realize that they provide us with all their oil, but I damn well feel we should be doing more intelligence on their asses and killing the people in that country who are responsible for or sponsoring terrorism abroad.

Yes, I'm basically saying we should fight terrorism with terrorism.

[Edited on February 21, 2006 at 10:46 PM. Reason : Although I'd rather we try not to kill civilians not directly involved with the terrorism...]

I honestly wouldn't mind driving an econoshittruckbox. If it meant being completely energy-independent, I'd do it, assuming that it would be affordable.

Hmm let me paint this clearer for those at State who dont care about this...

Let's say for instance UAE controls a major shipping port out of Wilmington, which ships out lets say Kevlar, which is the bullet proof material which the College of Textiles at NCSU help produce. Well lets say this new company out of U.A.E., puts a large tax on all security based goods, fire retardant clothing, ammo for military, but in this case Kevlar vests, and let's say..and go out on a whim that these vests our being shipped overseas to our guys to aide them in their war in Iraq and other Middle Eastern areas. Well if the taxed placed on the goods is too high, it means our College of Textiles makes less, which means it produces less vests, which means less gets shipped out to our guys fighting their butts off overseas and getting blown the fuck up...So dont sit back and say you dont give a fuck B/C whether you do or dont care this has an affect on people....how the fuck can you pay X amount of dollars to be in school at NCSU and say you dont care..wake the fuck up! I dont care who you voted for-for president, Im just saying get your fucking noses out of "oh my gf has big tits discussion" and for once realize shit outside of NCSU has an effect on the people that live in NC!
For instance the buds of mine who are in Iraq fighting at this current moment, and something as this little example could actually happen in the very near future....
