Tell me what you know/think about this place. I've been looking into a job up there with a firm that looks pretty great. I don't know much at all about the area though, and before I get too excited about anything I was wondering if anyone has any comments about the place...

Other than the university, there's not much there at all.

But UVA is chock full of pussy waiting to get fucked.

Actually I'm just getting acquainted with it myself. My parents bought a house in the Lake Monticello community about 15 minutes from town. I had been up there before and took my wife to see their new house they just built and it was gorgeous. He has about a 20+ minute drive to work on the other side of Charlottesville. I love the twisty little roads around where he lives. When it gets warmer the Camaro and I are going up their to play in the mountains one weekend. Hell his commute to work goes right by Monticello everyday. A lot better than my drive to fucking Ahoskie.

The town itself was very pretty I thought. Traffic wasn't terribly bad and it had some nice places to eat, shop, etc. Housing is expensive as fuck in Charlottesville though. As was previously mentioned, went through campus and tons of quality pussy was strolling around. We are gonna start hitting up C-Vegas about one weekend a month now.

perhaps i should clarify, if it wasn't obvious before, that i am not a dude, nor a lesbian so the UVA ladies everyone keeps mentioning is a moot point for me.

^Thats a shame.

Haha I guess with the high ratio of guys to women around here and the previous comments on the ladies of UVA, I was led to believe the person starting this conversation was a man.

I'm from not too far away and spent a summer in Cville. It is a very nice place, in the city the traffic's not too bad, the downtown area is pretty sweet, and if you go outside the city there's beautiful places to go for a drive, hike, whatever. The Corner is where most of the UVA students go for food, drinks, etc. It is a lot different than Raleigh but personally I prefer it.

Got a buddy that's been living up there for a year and absolutely loves it. Mainly for two reason:

- the abundance of women

- the proximity to Wintergreen. He just picked up snowboarding and it's like a 30-45 drive and he goes every weekend.

The way he talks, it sounds like a nice place regardless of the multitude of females. If you like Chapel Hill, then you would like Charlottesville. And as someone else said, the cost of living is kind of high.

I grew up around there and recently moved back to the general area. There are a lot of different things to do around the area, but it all depends on what you are interested in. This area is known for being horse country. There are a ton of vineyards around. Lots of historical crap if that is what you like. Also, movies are occasionally filmed around here. The Paramount Theater was recently redone and is having a bunch of random and cool people/bands/acts through there. Like I said, depends on what you are looking for.

i might be going to tour there this week if i get in for grad school... places usually get back to you in feb or early march, so i should hear back any time now. i'm excited. i hope i get in... it'd be nice to get out of NC.

(i know its been like half a month since this thread was active, but i'd like to have it still alive for when i find out more)

Charlottesville, aka "the Hook" for the ' in C'ville, is GREAT. It has wonderful climate and beauty if never more than 15 minutes away. Rolling hills, horses- lots of horses- good schools, decent night life, but not a city like atmosphere. Close to Wintergreen; you can get to DC in a couple of hours. Great trails and outdoor activities and experiences.

More like a William and Mary or Princeton town vs a Chapel Hill.

And all that nasty stuff you all said about the women is absolutely pure bull. To be a student at Virginia is about making a difference in the world. Whether you come from a priviledged background or not, you are there to learn, you are expected to have honor (much more so than at NC State) and above all you are to contribute to and make a difference in the lives of others.

for anyone who is familiar with the city/campus area... are there much off campus living options that are within walking distance of the campus. (the philosophy department in particular)

if i move there, i'd be living alone, so small size is not a problem. i really wouldn't mind living on campus... except that i need to live somewhere where i can stay over breaks/over the summer.

^^^Yes, I was and am serious. You must be hanging out by the railroad tracks when you go there.

40% of the student body was greek (not Greek) when I was there. A minority, but a loud one- and lots of fun too.

I was born in Charlottesville, lived there til I was 5, and my parents moved back there a couple of years ago. I call it the Chapel Hill of Virginia, but it's definitely not exactly the same. I will agree with the comments about the high cost of living, but I wouldn't say it's much worse than Cary. Housing is veeery expensive (my parents just bought a house last year). Things I personally like about the area are the proximity to the mountains for hiking/skiing, and that there is always something interesting to do. Paramount does have some pretty good shows (lots of jazz, plays, and country stuff) , and there is a local brewery called Starr Hill that makes pretty decent beer. There is a place called Foxfield where they have a steeplechase every year...lots of drinking. The local newspaper (ironically called The Daily Progress...a lot of people call it the Daily Regress) is reeeally weak-usually only about 7 sheets thick, but other publications like "The Hook" (http://www.readthehook.com/) give a pretty good idea of what the area is like. Hope that helps.

Well I was told grad schools usually get back to you in feb (or at the latest early march). I applied back in Nov... but it looks like I might have to make my grad school decision without having toured schools since the vast majority wont have got back to me until after spring break which I had saved open for touring.

^ nasty and untrue.

Shalot seems to have a good read on the place. I used to ride near Foxfield- at Foxfield stables and then the Barracks. I used to take my horse onto the steeplechase course. I tried to get enough daring to take him over the fences, but I was riding on my own, so if I killed myself, no one would have found me for awhile. Foxfield is a fun event. Mountains are beautiful. 21 curve road is lots of fun. I hope it is still there. Would love to try it in something other than the big old clunkers I drove back in the day.

too bad you are doing all the driving... the wineries around here are relatively well known
PM me and tell me what kind of stuff you are interested in and I can let you know what is around that you would like. The hunt races are going on right now, but I don't know which hunt is holding the races this Saturday. Again, just let me know.
