http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ttpcworld/20060210/tc_techtues_pcworld/124642&cid=1740&ncid=1729Above is the link to the 10 reasons why to buy Windows Vista. After reading through it is seems like the message it sends out is "Look we kinda caught up and have some of the cool stuff too that set apart other OSes". Personally, I'm more of a Linux/OS X guy, which doesn't mean I still have respect for Microsoft's OS, but I was somehow expecting that there would be something new and innovative that Vista would bring to the table other than .... wow, IE7 has tabs (Firefox?) ... or great you can search your computer by using indexed data (Spotlight?).

is that like that new "longhorn" thing that windows was gonna make?
2/19/2006 10:15:00 AM
i still think it looks shitty compared to Apple's OSXMicrosoft hasn't ever invested in good designers for aesthetics.-ZiP!-

I hope the new security features do what they claim they are supposed to do. Otherwise, I'm sticking with XP till the kinks are worked out of it.

#1 reason not to get vista: it's a new OS
2/28/2006 10:01:45 AM
^ LOL i agree
2/28/2006 10:09:07 AM
^^on the same noteLet me give you two why NOT to IMMEDIATELY go buy Vista:1. Look at what happened with Win64. Driver support was horrible, and despite huge claims, x64 never really seemed to take off.2. By the time they get the bugs worked out of Vista and you can use it without hassle (and maybe some companies decide to make drivers that are optimized for Vista), the price will fall 100 dollars and you will save yourself three months of constant hassle of trying to get everything to work properly. Not saying that this is DEFINITELY going to happen, but good grief, its a lot of money to be tossing around until you can be sure that it will be worth it. I'm really glad that I didn't run and buy x64, because there isn't much software for it and nobody seems to care about it.

^ yeah, wait for the bookstore to get a 69.95 dollar upgrade deal or something for the pro version, if you're not imediately able to download it if you're in comp sci.
3/2/2006 2:27:14 PM
im wanting vista to come out so i can get XP Pro for cheap
3/2/2006 2:33:35 PM
wow you're a jew
3/2/2006 3:49:34 PM
^^Um, I think you can pick up a copy of the XP Pro upgrade disk for about 70 bucks now. I got my upgrade disk two years ago for 83 dollars on newegg. The price of XP Pro won't drop until Vista becomes the STANDARD. Even the Xbox's price hasn't dropped much since the release of the 360, so don't get your hopes up on Pro bottoming out this year.

^^ does sound neat. seems like an excuse for the average person (not using photoshop/gaming) to really want 2GB+ of ram
3/2/2006 7:40:12 PM
shit, with that feature to increase the system RAM through USB devices, my 1gb SD card will be spending a lot more time in the front of my desktop "just sitting there"
3/2/2006 8:30:17 PM
technically its not system ram. Its just a faster-than-hdd space for prefetching.the part thats really really really fucking cool is how vista knows what you're going to do before you do it.even based on day of week or time of day.like if i come home and play wow at 9pm every night its gonna have that shit already up in ram before i launch it.kind of like the predicitive data fetching in sqlserver 2005.
3/2/2006 8:58:17 PM
so what if i come home and decide i want to look at some HD porn instead of playing WoW as regularly scheduled? Is it going to take 2x as long to load?I can see this being another in a long line of "cool" but completely worthless features (system restore anybody?)
3/2/2006 9:50:03 PM
3/2/2006 10:40:44 PM
system restore is pretty important dude
3/2/2006 10:48:09 PM
i've never used it.but the new system sounds like i WOULD use it.
3/2/2006 10:57:11 PM
3/3/2006 5:33:12 AM
im sticking with OS/2
3/3/2006 8:40:30 AM
cheapest i find XP pro at newegg ishttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16837102062definately not 70 or 80 bucksi assume you got that off some kind of sale?

^^http://www.provantage.com/microsoft-academic-e85-02670~7MCSW013.htmThat was what I got, only Newegg was carrying it back then. And this was just from two minutes of froogle-ing. Provantage tends to have stuff pretty cheap, but they are a TRUSTWORTHY source. I've bought lotsa stuff from them before.
