i know several carolina fans that hate duke, but absolutely LOATHE NC State. There are two rivalries, one based on mutual respect (and thus, fear) and the other based on pure hatred.

i wouldn't hire a UNC guy. My uncle wouldn't hire a state guy. the reason george karl wouldn't play julius hodge is because of the state/carolina rivalry.


but i know some carolina fans, mostly younger ones, that loathe duke and ask "who?" when they refer to NC State. it's the fault of Monteith.

Basketball: Duke/UNC is the bigger rivalry (at this point in time)

Football: State/UNC is the bigger rivalry. This is shown by the fact that Kenan seems to only sell out for State games these past few years. For VT and Miami both, they were not sell outs. They were only in the 57-58K range, while our games have always been 60K.

but the reason that kenan sells out for state games is because the state fans buy all of the tickets . . . not the unc fans.

the duke / unc football game atleast has that cart or bell or whatever it is, i forget and don't really care. there isn't anykind of thing that is traded between us and UNC as with most rivalry games.




it def isn't completely one sided though . . . hence y they always come and take the time to paint our tunnel before a game.

Getting this thread back on topic:

State was better than UNC for a long time. NC State owned the Southern Conference, and used to own the Dixie Classic every year. UNC has only been really good in basketball since Dean Smith was placed on a pedestal. Even then, Case and Valvano made the rivalry real and tough through their tenures. Les Robinson gave UNC two wins a year in the rivalry, and really was the push down that State didn't need. NC State fans still despise N&O writers and UNC fans for their involvement in the scapegoating of Jim Valvano. Herb has built a CLEAN program that is now reaping benefits of winning. The NC State/UNC rivalry will continue to grow again, but will probably not replace the recent renewal of the Duke/UNC battles. The Carlyle Cup also helps foster the UNC/Duke rivalry by giving them something to play for each year in every sport, and the bell doesn't hurt.

NC State will soon be back to where we were, on top. UNC and Duke will remain good as long as Coach K remains at Duke and Dean Smith remains alive. John Swofford also helps with his position as the ACC commisioner. He sets up the media coverage and also probably does alot of the "behind the scenes" work to keep it competetive.

^^^ people seem to forget most of that. UNC wasnt too hot for a long time, even once god dean smith was there (for a few years, anyway). UNC was so envious of STATE the fans actually hung a likeness of Smith from a tree in effigy. We've had some rough years, and the fire herb douche's will always be there, but i can't recall anyone asking for herb's death.

Yeah, UNC and Duke built their basketball programs out of jealousy of State basketball program.

Duke and UNC were football powerhouses back in the day (well not powerhouses, but pretty good) and State sucked, so we just decided to go our own direction and build a basketball program....probably out of Jealousy of their football programs. Point is, we started this Tobacco Road basketball shit...and this the mother fucking thanks we get???????

Anyway, Valvano did do some stupid shit, and the N&O didnt help to keep him around. He wasnt dirty to start out, but they say he pretty much was "addicted to winning". He was a great coach that made a few bad decisions that hurt the program, and we havent been able to recover. No disrespect (but much hate) to UNC and Duke's programs because they deserve the hype, but damn, we really do get the short end of the stick when people talk about ACC basketball. The rivalry games should be Duke, UNC, and NC State playing each other 2 times a year....fuck UMD and Wake. I know we sucked for about 15 years, but we have clearly been on the rise...and we've done it cleanly.
