i'm doing a presentation on what people really think of india, its inhabitants, and the major religious demographic there.i don't necessarily need politically correct views - i just want your views, or if you have any resources like a message board discussion where people are offering input on what they think, then i'd appreciate that link.

they are the dot on the forehead kind, right?
2/16/2006 2:22:25 AM
yeah, the dot, not the feather
2/16/2006 2:22:41 AM
so, the general image that the indians that i've encountered here in the US leads me to stereotype them as high tech smelly mexicans.not to put too fine a point on it.
2/16/2006 2:27:44 AM
[yes, OMFG RACIST]seriously, that's just the stereotype. i've known a whole lot of indians that i've hung out with countless times that are cool people. same with colored people and spics. and crackers.
2/16/2006 2:29:33 AM
oh and wops and patty's too.
2/16/2006 2:30:41 AM
yeah i need honest opinions, not PC ones - it's all good
2/16/2006 2:31:02 AM
i mean that's really not my opinion about all indians... that's just the stereotype... kindof like the stereotype that all white people are unable to dance and play basketball.I've never been to india, so i can't really give an honest opinion of it's people.
2/16/2006 2:33:14 AM
the indian people i know are cool, they don't give me trouble. one used to be my resident CD burner dood but that aside, they've always been nicer to me than normal, can take a joke in stride, and even dish the funny on occasionally
2/16/2006 2:34:28 AM
to be honest, the most exposure i have had to indians is people bashing them on here.the indians that i've known have always been cool... i lived with a few back when i was in the dorms. Also, indian food is good shit.
2/16/2006 2:47:44 AM
well there are two types of indiansone is the GQ Indian. this guy wears alot of brut, lacoste shirts, and leather loafers ALL The time. They usually join a frat, drive an acura, and slick their hair all up. You never see them with women but they always act like they have tons of chicks. slick dudes. they've assimilated into american lifestyle quite well, except they're still notoriously cheap for anything other than vanity.the other is the 1970's burt reynolds indian. this guy still wears the baby blue shirts that are too tight, the tan corduroy pants, the burt reynolds mustache, and the suave ken-doll hair. they always have a mean look on their face, and are usually substantially darker, and smellier, than the GQ's. they ride the bus, only hang out with other indians, and are always the dudes that call for safety escorts at 3am because they've been slaving in broughton and are too lazy to walk home. even cheaper than the GQ, and not very personable. VERY accusatory when anything goes wrong in any given situation.so there you have it. the women? who knows, man, they don't talk to anyone.
2/16/2006 3:56:13 AM
Dead serious here:I'm down w/ your culture. But when you come to America, YOU WEAR DEODORANT
2/16/2006 4:00:59 AM
Not to sound too Chit-Chatish, but I've recently started noticing Indian chicks more. Not the ones that walk around still dressed up in the robes with the dot on their forehead all the time... but just attractive Indian girls who are around campus and such. They never really did anything for me before, and now I'm like, woah... you're a hottie! wtf when did that happen? Maybe I'm just an odd cookie...
2/16/2006 7:16:09 AM
^^^other than the GC indian like he mentioned, i see many of them sticking to other indians in a tight group and aren't very social. they hardly speak back when spoken to and spend most of their weekend nights studying. the curry makes them smell bad.
2/16/2006 7:33:46 AM
Most Indians, whether they were brought up here or not, only associate with other Indians. They tend to not like me because I associate with other races and am christian. Three tears yo.
2/16/2006 8:34:52 AM
What's a patty? When they're not being brown riceboys/ricegirls, they're cool. I'm not much for the hip hop "culture".
2/16/2006 8:47:27 AM
never really knew/hung out with anyso i have the usual ignorant sterotypes [Edited on February 16, 2006 at 8:48 AM. Reason : which i am sure some of them are true in some cases]
2/16/2006 8:48:24 AM

2/16/2006 9:13:47 AM
^^ That's exactly my situation. I take it he's from south india, probably Kerala?Where I grew up, there were no other Indian families around, so I never encountered this shit till I got to college.[Edited on February 16, 2006 at 9:15 AM. Reason : adgf]

one of my good friends is indian. when i think of him i think of a very quiet, reserved guy, who thinks highly of his mother and sister, especially his sister. relationship with his father i think of being kind of strained, but only because his father was tough on him and wanted the best for him. nothing too overbearing, but would throw his weight around to get his point across when his son was fucking up. because of that he's very disciplined and tries very hard to achieve his goal. when i think of him i think of a guy who is always trying to find some sort of inner peace--i've seen him go from being very much athiest but with an understanding of religion, to a person who's found a sort of religion that is more long the lines of a spirituality than an actual following. but he's lived in america nearly all of his life so he's very much of an american as he is indian. he is definitely majority american culture, but his religion and family tendencies i see as being more "indian."
2/16/2006 9:18:58 AM
^^Correct, his family is from south India, mainly from Madurai.
2/16/2006 9:25:05 AM
distinctive smell, hate pakistan, hairy, good work ethic
2/16/2006 9:27:46 AM
2/16/2006 9:32:26 AM

2/16/2006 9:42:31 AM
I really dont know any Hindus or anyone born in india other than a couple TAs and the folks I stand next to on the bus.And from my limited experience, they seem nice enough, but they are very smelly. When it isnt BO, its like they've bathed in curry.

A few Indians worked at the CStores before I took a break from working there myself. I was curious about their religion so talked to one of them quite a bit about his beliefs. Not only did he believe in the Hindu gods, but he also believed in Jesus. He was a very quiet reserved guy. He was very nice and understanding. He was in engineering but I got the feeling that had a lot to do with his father being an engineer and wanting him to be one as well. He talked a lot about wanting to do journalism. My best friend in high school was an Indian girl. She was very quiet and I approached her after fellow students made fun of her when they asked her name, etc. She was the first Indian I'd ever met. She was very shy and did well in school. She was planning to be a brain surgeon, or something along those lines. I ate once with her and her mom - her dad took care of the family's business, which was a gas station. It was authentic food, I can't remember what it was called. Definitely spicy. Her mom was really friendly. I remember we were both in a Horticulture class and my friend told me it was hard to understand what the teacher was saying because not only was it the American accent, but it was a very Southern accent. I asked her to do an American accent, and she did one pretty well. I think a lot don't care about fashion, as with my friend, but the rest care a lot about it and fads. They're not very good tippers in restaurants and they go crazy, fighting each other to get to the computer/tech sales first at places like Circuit City. Those two observations are from when my husband waited tables, and then worked at CC.

i should also mention that the indian i'm close friends with does dress nicely, wears lots of deodarant, and takes about 2 hours to shower. we always joke around when he's going to be coming over or meeting up with us that if he says X time, that it'll really be X+2 hours because of how long it takes him to get ready.

I think Indians for the most part are awsome. Some of the coolest guys and gals i know are Indian, however, i should mention that they're pretty Americanized, and throw awsome parties But yes, it is true that many Indians stay within the community, and i've definatly had bad experiences with some, as sometimes they can be pretty moralistic and traditional.BTW, the Jesus and Hindu gods thing is actually pretty common, Indians (at least in India) often treat Jesus as another god, which i thought was kinda cool. One thing that you might not realize, and many Indians in the US would probably not agree, but at least in India, people are very "colorist." Lightness and white people are often regarded as more beautiful. Blame it on colonialism, but lightening face creams and such are really common there. It's really crazey, when i was in India the ligher people of our group were such a curiousity and people always wanted to take picutes with them. We were like circus freaks, i think in some regards. But i think this is mostly, at least superficially lost in the US.What is very true is that Indians are usually encouraged by their families to marry Indians, I think it's even more difficult for the girls (which are finally being recognized as totually cute !) to "break out."As for sterotypes, i'm not sure that many others hold. I'm not that dress thing is universal, I see most Indians in America dressing kinds preppy.Oh yeah, and Indian food is fucking awsome.

yeh its kinda funny. i associate with indians and have many close friends that are but i also associate with non-indians. when i'm with my non-indian friends i can get some weird responses. one time i was walking down the street and this indian guy was like "you're not ____ are you why are you hanging out with them." i thought it was kinda funny but he was a taxi driver so i didn't pay him much attention.

I used to have a hell of a time dealing with Indian customers when I worked in commissioned sales. They asked eleventy billion impertinent questions, and would always get pissed when we didn't have multi-region DV players. And they ALWAYS returned stuff. Everything. And when you're in commissioned sales, it's hard to approach a customer when you're pretty sure they're going to return what you sell them anyway. It was so hard crossing the culture barrier with them there that the other guys in my department and I would call "not it" when one walked in the section. Hell, my boss, Jai (an Indian himself) even told us how deceptive and underhanded Indians were when they bought things. Then again, Jai had been in the US 20 of his 40 years, so he was very Americanized. Our favorite joke for him was, "Hey Jai, what did five fingers say to the face?... Slap, Bitch!!!"I think Indians draw a lot of contempt because of the language and culture barrier. Seriously guys, wear some deoderant. I hated EB1 because it smelled SO bad due the large amount of curry consumption on behalf of the residents there. As an engineer I would say I was concerned about how many tech jobs are going to India, but that fad is fading out - companies are getting tired of the language and culture barrier. In fact, I went out to lunch with a man who does international business and he says Indians are the WORST to do business with. Apparently, they straight-up lie about product specs and capabilities, in the end screwing their clients just to make a buck./Rant

I don't really have an opinion either way. I don't judge people until after I get to know them. Then, if you're an asshole it doesn't matter to me where you're from.

I actually tried to count the +ve and -ve posts regarding us (Indians)....I see more negative ones... ...... .....and people who think we hate other religions are stupid..Our president is a Muslim ( < 14 % of our population), our prime minister is a Sikh (<3 % of our population), the president of the ruling political party in India is a Catholic and a woman and an Italian (<3 % of our population). All these minority people have been elected by a demography that consists of more then 80% Hindus. Even after all this, if someone thinks that we don't like them because of their religion, they are retarded...[Edited on February 16, 2006 at 11:46 PM. Reason : asdf]
