Why does a republic need to hide its actions from its constituency? Why does free speech become treason punishable by death when you're sharing "national secrets" with the enemy? How do we know our "national secrets" aren't the beach houses of appointed federal officials? If the enemy will represent your interests while your representative government lies to you and manuevers themselves into better individual economic and social positions by way of the power you entrust them with, who is really your enemy? One can only be held accountable for deeds that are known, and government without accountability quickly degrades into tyranny. /rant

How quickly are we talking about, because we've been doing pretty good for a while. Besides, why would we want the enemy to know strategic things about our government that are top secret? Should we just go out and share our intelligence and technology with every country that wants to know?

I don't even know if I should address this considering that there are numerous cases where some bureaucrat's loose lips directly lead to someone's death.
