and then rebroadcast it? reason being, i'd like to set up a wireless router up to pick up my main wireless signal, and then rebroadcast it to extend the effective range. can it work like that?

get a wrt54g v1,2,3,4 NOT 5then load it up with a custom firmware (DD-WRT v23 works)put it in WDS repeater mode.[Edited on February 11, 2006 at 3:18 PM. Reason : .]

is there any security difference between the linksys with 4.0 and a custom firmware?
2/11/2006 8:48:30 PM
^ not anything that you can do over the web interfacebut you could potentially run a ppp-ssh or ipsec or something on top of a custom 4.0 firmwarehowever .. I believe WPA2 is considered secure at this point in timejust run WPA2 /w TKIP + AES

can you hook up 2 wrt54g's together wirelessly? If you buy them at beast buy now are they v 5.0?
2/13/2006 3:03:03 PM
can't you just buy a repeater rather than a whole router?
2/13/2006 3:17:32 PM
Ok say you do this, router #2 rebroadcasting #1's signal. If you have a pc physically connected to router #2 would it also be on that network that is being rebroadcasted or would the pc have to be on wireless?
2/13/2006 3:24:50 PM
I already have an extra router.^^
2/13/2006 6:22:24 PM
^^ this can be done with client bridging^^^ yes, but plz link me if you find a cheap one^^^^ yes, yes

co-worker picked up 2 WRT54G's Figured they wouldn't work since they are v5.0 and they of course did not. Heard that the VPN 54G router will allow us to do what we're wanting to do. They are $175 each. Anyone know of a cost effective solution other than getting our hands on 2 wrt54g routers <5.0?
2/14/2006 6:59:45 PM
i'll consult you...$100

The linksys one seems to work wonderfully as long as you have a compatable setup.[Edited on February 14, 2006 at 8:07 PM. Reason : ]

question... do i have to load the special firmware onto both routers for it to work, or can I just fiddle with the one?
