at coretta's funeral

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/02/10/politics/main1303595.shtml

Quote :
"(CBS) Former President George H.W. Bush has expressed dismay and anger at attacks on his son, President Bush, at the funeral for Coretta Scott King.

"In terms of the political shots at the president who was sitting there with his wife, I didn't like it and I thought it was kind of ugly frankly," the former president said in an exclusive radio interview with CBS News White House correspondent Peter Maer.

"Anybody that shoots at the president of the United States at a funeral, I just didn't appreciate that," Mr. Bush added

Former President Carter and the Rev. Joseph Lowery criticized the president during remarks they made at the King funeral in Atlanta.

The Rev. Lowery, who co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King Jr., drew a roaring standing ovation when he said: "For war, billions more, but no more for the poor" - a takeoff on a line from a Stevie Wonder song. The comment drew head shakes from Mr. Bush and his father as theysat behind the pulpit.

Former President Carter brought up the government response to Katrina, saying, "We only have to recall the color of the faces of those in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi" to know that inequality exists. He also noted that the Kings once were "victims of secret government wiretapping" - echoing Mr. Bush's domestic spying program.

Former President Bush also had praise for his friend, Bill Clinton: "I thought President Clinton was maybe the best. It was his crowd. They talk about Bill Clinton being 'the first black president,' well when you walk into that church with 12,000 or whatever it was, I mean it was very clear who that crowd loved and respected." "

whats funny is nobody ever said "BOO THIS MAN FOR WIRETAPPING!" or "BOO THIS MAN FOR GIVING MORE MONEY TO WAR!"

people simply criticized wiretapping and war spending

not their fault that bush is the poster child for these problems

its not that they were criticizing something they were against...its that they were doing at a funeral!!!

and they were using an icon like Mrs. King as a freakin tool to take shots at the president. it was a disgusting dispay of arrogance and its things like this that the american people see and are so turned off by...and it keeps the democrates from winning anything. It goes against every common sense of decency that 90% of americans have. so as long as the dems keep this kinda crap up...they keep losing

Do you have the inability to type "democrats"? It's not that hard.

What do you expect of the preacher? George Bush represents a lot of the things Coretta Scott King was strongly against. She was a political being. Do you think she would have preferred to act like everything was fine?

friends and family arent the only people that matter here...she was more than that

and the simple truth is...the american people see the way that the DEMOCRATS (that better?)...act at these things and they are turned off...no one is waiting to see what the family thought....

and no the preacher should not be taking shots at the president during the funeral...thats amazingly disrespectful and will cost libs in the elections

you know, I don't think the cia has a political affiliation.

that aside, i read a pretty obvious point yesterday. the kings, both of them, were very much against everything mr. bush stands for, and those who made these comments, I would say, know very much what mrs. king would have wanted said at her funeral. This whole "boo hoo, the evil democrats used her" are ignoring the fact that SHE expressed these same sentiments.

go find another fucking target, because mrs. king would be so happy to have seen that shot of bush's face at her funeral.

I know I won't be able to prove it until clinton or someone is the next president, but trust me, I won't give up on her just 'cause she's a democrat. I don't give a FUCK. You fuck with my country, you fuck with me.

^ This WASN'T disrespectful to Coretta, and it WON'T be considered disrespectful to her, until her family/friends there complain about it.

However, it was a bit underhanded to invite the president to a funeral you know he wouldn't turn down, only to bash him once he got there.

On the other hand, it's not often that someone gets to voice their opinions directly to the person that matters, and i'm sure the other side would have done the same thing, if given the opportunity.

the wellstone memorial was THE EXACT SAME THING.

a man of principle with deep feelings had a memorial service dedicated to him wherein those things were discussed, just as I'm sure he would have wanted.

If you really think that no conservative activist has had conservatives speak about him at a funeral, well, I just can't imagine how you would assume that without checking on it

fred phelps planned to protest king's funeral
http://www.keithboykin.com/arch/001806.html
Quote :
"Some members of a controversial church in Topeka, Kansas plan to protest the funeral of Coretta Scott King because of her support for gay and lesbian rights. Members of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, led by Rev. Fred Phelps, announced their plans in a press release earlier today.

"God is not mocked," the group said. Citing Biblical verses, the group leaders wrote, "God Hates Fags! Fag-Enablers! Ergo, God hates Coretta Scott King and is now tormenting her with fire and brimstone where the worm never dies and the fire is never quenched, and the smoke of her torment ascendeth up for ever and ever.""

he's a radical, but he sure is conservative

He and his followers frequently picket various events, especially gay pride and funerals of gay men, feeling it is their sacred duty to impress their views upon others.

Well, they wouldn't have had an opportunity anytime in the past 6 years, because it would difficult for a conservative to speak out against the government, when their man is in power.

My memory doesn't extend back enough in to the Clinton era to give you an example.

However, conservatives made a big deal about Pat Tillman's death, when it turned out he was against the war, and also an atheist. I think his family even complained about it.

so are you just angry because they were discussing politics at a funeral?

Quote :
" He came to office with great hopes for America, and more than hopes -- like the President he had revered and once saw in person, Franklin Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan matched an optimistic temperament with bold, persistent action. President Reagan was optimistic about the great promise of economic reform, and he acted to restore the reward and spirit of enterprise. He was optimistic that a strong America could advance the peace, and he acted to build the strength that mission required. He was optimistic that liberty would thrive wherever it was planted, and he acted to defend liberty wherever it was threatened.

President George W. Bush escorts former First Lady Nancy Reagan to her seat before the funeral service for former President Ronald Reagan at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC on June 11, 2004. White House photo by Paul Morse And Ronald Reagan believed in the power of truth in the conduct of world affairs. When he saw evil camped across the horizon, he called that evil by its name. There were no doubters in the prisons and gulags, where dissidents spread the news, tapping to each other in code what the American President had dared to say. There were no doubters in the shipyards and churches and secret labor meetings, where brave men and women began to hear the creaking and rumbling of a collapsing empire. And there were no doubters among those who swung hammers at the hated wall as the first and hardest blow had been struck by President Ronald Reagan.

The ideology he opposed throughout his political life insisted that history was moved by impersonal ties and unalterable fates. Ronald Reagan believed instead in the courage and triumph of free men. And we believe it, all the more, because we saw that courage in him. "

bush sr. at reagan's funeral.

Quote :
"The clarity and intensity of Ronald Reagan's convictions led to speaking engagements around the country, and a new following he did not seek or expect. He often began his speeches by saying, "I'm going to talk about controversial things." And then he spoke of communist rulers as slavemasters, of a government in Washington that had far overstepped its proper limits, of a time for choosing that was drawing near. In the space of a few years, he took ideas and principles that were mainly found in journals and books, and turned them into a broad, hopeful movement ready to govern."
he talked shit about communism omg!!!
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/06/20040611-2.html

If you want a conservative attacking the other political side at a funeral, i'm sure i can find one. to me, though, I don't have a problem with bringing up politics and rights at a funeral for a person whocared more about those things than anything else in this world. It's like you're saying a baseball player's funeral shouldn't involve baseball talk

i dont have a problem talking politics at a funeral...as long as they are done in rememberence of that person...and as long as its done in order to respect that person

my problem with things like the King funeral and the Wellstone Memorial is that dems turn them into chances to whore out the soul of a dead person to further some cause...even if it is the cause the person believed in....i think its disgusting that this rev. in atlanta or wherever would use use his speach...at king's funeral...to take pot shots at the prez

he knows this thing is on tv..he knows everyone is watching..he knows whatever he says will get lots of press...and all he did was rip on the president....thats what i have a problem with

That didn't happen. Corretta was not a Bush supporter. No dead people were whored out.

However, Pat Tillman was not a Bush supporter, yet his death WAS whored out, to the chagrin of his family, by the Bush administration. Just think of it this way... Pat Tillman would have punched you in your face, for your support of Bush, and his "illegal war" (Pat's actual term, according to one of his soldier friends).

What were they protesting that she wasn't for? I'm not a rocket scientist, but I'm sure kids weren't for getting shot.

If you're going to go down the road of people looking like garbage for protesting, then look at conservative churches that have protested at military funerals.

Quote :
"Families decry church protests at Midstate soldiers' funerals

Anti-gay sect says deaths show God's wrath

By JEANNINE F. HUNTER
Staff Writer

Members of a virulently anti-gay Kansas church plan to demonstrate outside two Midstate National Guard funerals tomorrow, an action that has the military community incensed.

The two guardsmen killed last week in Iraq from the 278th Regimental Combat Team were Sgt. Gary L. Reese Jr. of Ashland City and Staff Sgt. Asbury F. Hawn Jr. of Lebanon.

Members of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan. — which has the Web site godhatesfags.com — plan to picket outside the services.

The church was established 50 years ago by the Rev. Fred Phelps, whose followers say America has been co-opted by gays, and God's wrath is therefore rightfully killing soldiers.

"Honestly, I think it's disrespectful," said Reese's father, Gary Reese. "The irony is my son lost his life trying to spread the freedom that grants these people the right to do this. I don't appreciate it, and I certainly don't support it."

This summer, the unaffiliated church group has picketed funerals of troops killed in the war across the country, at places including Arlington National Cemetery.

The church consists largely of Phelps' children, grandchildren and in-laws. It also has protested conservative organizations such as Bob Jones University in South Carolina for not fully embracing his message.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, the church's lawyer and Phelps' daughter, said the military funeral protests are to draw attention to how America has transgressed.

"This nation is being punished," Phelps-Roper said Tuesday in a telephone interview. "Our job is to make America know her abomination. So we have to be timely and we have to be topical. We have to help America connect the dots. In the last two months, we have been running all over this nation. About 60 people do these pickets and we have six pickets in Topeka every day."

The church's literature promoting the event contains phrases such as, "They turned America over to fags; they're coming home in body bags."

Reese said the purpose of the protest remains unclear to him, but he has peace of mind knowing that his only child believed in the mission in Iraq.

"He was home over the Fourth of July and we talked about it and he was very comfortable about what we're trying to do over there," Reese said. "He felt it was the right thing to do."

Enraged is how Virginia Stephens of Rockvale described her feelings when she heard that the group planned to protest outside Hawn's funeral.

Hawn was in the same troop as her husband, Wayman Stephens, who remains in Iraq. Hawn and Reese died after a rocket-propelled grenade hit their Humvee.

"These are real people who are calling themselves Christian who are going to do this?" she asked. "That is amazing to me."

Ashland City Police Chief Curtis Bennett is baffled, too.

"I am a veteran, 21 years from the service and retired, and my deputy chief, he's a veteran," said Bennett, who served in the Air Force. "These people, activists, try to use so much stuff against people for no reason whatsoever."

He said he told the protesters, " 'This is a small town and the parents have lost a loved one and all they want is peace and quiet and to bury their son and to get on with their life.' "

He anticipates neither any problems nor staged counterprotests.

The recent spate of military funerals also has led Stephens to make road trips.

"I go to all the funerals that are public to attend, funerals for people I have never met," said the former police officer. "It's honor and it's respect. These people have done something that can't be replaced. These men don't want to die. These families don't want to bury their husbands and sons. What this country has lost sight of is that this is one nation under God. God says love thy brother, not wish them dead." •
