For the months to come, lets hope we can all help each other out if we ever need it.

Rule #1) Don't join SHRM. Who in the hell pays for extra credit? If you do, your ass (or your rich parents) should be slapped around. That crap should be illegal anyway.Rule #2) Read DETAILS from the 'study guides' she'll hand out before tests. She loves to ask specific questions about specific sentences from the book. Reading just the powerpoints won't cut it.Rule #3) Speak up in class and answer her questions. She loves talking faces and will reward you even if it's not apparant.Rule #4) Keep up with your own quiz grades, ALL OF THEM. Last semester her TA's didn't do a good job AT ALL and I'm positive some of the "extra credit quizzes" I got never got factored into my grade. She has "attendence" quizzes every so often, so if she ever says "those of you who wanna leave can...", DON'T LEAVE. 10 mins. later you'll get 10 free quiz points.Rule #5) Show up for the videos/speakers. You'll see questions on them.Rule #6) Good luck on that essay; her grading is so erratic. She's a journalism major so her writing style favors that of a newspaper (headings, short-brief sentences, "Catch your eye" style that includes witty statements instead of sentences in a thesis paper or something). If you write like her and say things she wants to hear, you're money. Don't try to write a dissertation or you'll probably bomb it.Rule #7) She's kind of a jerk in class, especially if there's 10-15 folks in the rear that talk all the time. But she's real nice outside of the classroom setting. Feel free to talk to her, but don't rely on office hours. She just comes and goes whenever, sometimes she'll just walk out of class halfway through 'cause she's pissed off and act like she doesn't have a job to teach...it's weird.Rule #8) Be grateful you aren't in Davis' class.Rule #9) Screw SHRM.Rule #10) Her final exam is just a mixed bag of questions from her normal exams, so study those and you're money. Also, she tends to post exam grades "out of 60", so if you see a 56 don't freak out, you got a 56/60.
2/3/2006 1:45:31 PM
^ #7wouldn't you be pissed if people were disrespecting you in class?its not her job to babysit and try to keep peoples attn while 10-15 people are talking in the back
2/3/2006 6:02:50 PM
Another HR teacher does the SHRM extra credit thing? This is a conspiracy...
2/3/2006 6:04:51 PM
Wolfy, no, it wouldn't bother me.I sat about mid-way and I never was bothered by the talkers in the rear, and I was closer to them than Barnes was. It holds ~300 folks. You're kidding yourself if you think 100% of them on every given day are going to be mature, silent, whatever. She's the ONLY teacher I've ever had in N3400 to walk out of class because she couldn't stand the ambient noise in that room. And yes, Davis and the whole HR department at NC State is a conspiracy. I know they get kickbacks or something. It's rediculous. And they all act like zealots as if HR is the core of all businesses and it's the most important thing in the world. Truth is, it's not. It's annoying...But none of this is the point of the thread...good luck HR'ers
2/3/2006 6:31:53 PM
I think I aced her test today. On a side note, yes it's fucking bullshit that you have to pay for extra credit. I don't know how they get around it every year.
2/4/2006 2:46:31 AM
I see no reason why you shouldn't take the SHRM extra credit. I'm not saying it's a cool program or that I don't thinks its a stupid scam to get membership up, but take advantage of the extra 30 points. That could easily offset a missed quiz, careless errors on a test, etc.
2/4/2006 8:46:45 AM
^ Are you completely out of your mind? PAYING for points is about as unethical as you can get. It's not as bad as sleeping w/ your prof for points, but it's the same concept. If she would SUGGEST, or plug, the SHRM membership, that's fine. But offering a great deal of extra credit to you in turn for the money is complete garbage. And if you don't think those teachers receive some kind of credit for them increasing the membership, you're kidding yourself.I've heard the SCRC, ASQ, and several other BUS-oriented organziations plugged by teachers, but offering points for money is downright shady.[Edited on February 4, 2006 at 12:16 PM. 2/4/2006 12:16:00 PM
im not denying its a shady practice, or that the hr teachers dont have some sort of incentive to sign up as many people as possible for shrm, but as long as its within the rules from the university im gonna take the points.
2/4/2006 1:25:48 PM
Encourage the unethical practices. I dig your style tool
2/4/2006 1:53:02 PM
they don't get kickbacks i know both dr. barnes and dr. davis personally and competed on the hr games team last year--- they don't get anything from shrm except bragging rights for a strong chapter (people actually DO attend those meetings and do productive things you know)in fact, they both dedicate a lot of their own personal time to the organization and hr games and don't get anything extra for it-- if anything, the hr games team got money for competing, not dr. davis or dr. barnes
2/4/2006 2:54:54 PM
2/4/2006 2:58:46 PM
yeah because i am an unreliable source because i took the time to get to know a few professors outside of the classroom, please, grow up
2/4/2006 2:59:34 PM
Nice way to dodge the real issue here.Barnes knew me by name when I was in there too, I even said way up there she's nice outside of the classroom. But charging money for extra credit is fucking unethical and you know it.
2/4/2006 3:05:17 PM
i'm not dodging anything-- i was simply stating that neither of them get kickbacks, i never spoke to the ethics involved with charging for extra credityour reading comprehension really could use some work

2/4/2006 7:15:08 PM
2/4/2006 7:25:44 PM
yeah i had this class last semester and it was by far one of the worse classes i had and the SHRM member is totally shady bullshit and not even fair. you paid i think 40 or 50 dollars total yet only got 30 extra credit points= GAY
2/4/2006 9:03:30 PM
Yeah, I was PISSED about the paying for extra credit thing when I had 330I mean, sure, most of the kids taking that class have mom and dad who pay for their rent, clothes, alcohol, tuition, ect. and don't mind forking over $50 for their kids to have extra creditBut what about the people who work their asses off full time to pay for rent, utilities, food, insurance, ect. and also go to school full time? Why should we have the unfairness of the choice between paying the electricity bill or getting extra credit? That shit enrages me.
2/5/2006 9:45:49 AM
^ agree. I think the amount to join, regardless, is a little steep for college students to just hand over.
2/5/2006 4:23:30 PM
How can people on here possible argue with Southpaw regarding how unethical it is to pay for extra credit?? It's something that goes without saying, and Jcash and NCSuwolfy are fucking tools!! Also, Southpaw was detrimental in assisting tons of people and helping them get through that asswipe Brian Reich's 350 class, so respect anything he has to say. Needless to say, i completely agree with everyone in saying its bullshit that you have to pay for extra credit. Personally, im checking out that race study thing, which is free but will give me extra credit anyway!!! Gotta use that international factor for my benefit sometime!!
2/6/2006 11:21:52 AM
2/6/2006 2:26:47 PM
replace "detrimental" with "vital", just a confusion of grammar...I didn't even notice it at first
2/6/2006 3:11:15 PM
^^^what race study thing are you talking about?
2/6/2006 4:00:02 PM
where have you been? The race study circles she talks about EVERY day
2/6/2006 8:56:01 PM
glad I took this last semester. Never heard the words "Race study circles" in her class.
2/6/2006 9:40:05 PM
SHRM/BUS330 is a huge racket. I agree with Southpaw, paying for extra credit is completely unethical. I ended up w/ a B in that class, I didn't pay for extra credit. Barnes-Nelson really had a bad attitude and acted like she had something to prove in regards to how HR is "strategic" and not a support group. Fuck HR.
2/6/2006 10:35:53 PM
HAHA, yeah not "detrimental", but "instrumental" rather. I often post shit during my graveyard shift or after it, therefore pardon the errors. I got my point across though, it sucks to pay for extra-credit. Can it really be legal at NC state? Im sure if enough people said something about it, she will have to let go of the extra-credit idea. With regards to the race study thing, dude, she talks bout it all the time. Just ask her bout it.
2/7/2006 4:02:58 AM
i took the class last semester.
2/7/2006 7:30:11 AM
question:since black people as a whole have less money than white people (yeah, im generalizing but bare with me), wouldn't charging a fee for extra credit unfairly harm more blacks than whites? Wouldn't that be an excellent example of DISPARATE IMPACT taking place, and in motion because of, HR teachers who teach AGAINST the practice? Also, hell yeah Southpaw is my hero for saving me from Reich's class!!!
2/7/2006 8:09:49 AM
If you guys are so upset about this practice (paying for extra credit) why don't you bring it straight to the Department Head? Or the Dean? Maybe they could help.
2/7/2006 11:21:01 AM
^ Because students are worthless at NC State. Last semester we tried to take B. Reich to the Dean for being the worst excuse for a teacher we've ever seen. It got us NOWHERE. From what I heard, they even had someone sit in on his class and they deemed him a good professor. And all those evaluations you fill out at the end of the semester...notice how they *never work*?Universities are backwards from a typical business; the customer and minding customer service is dead last in their priorities. The paying students are last in line to get attention. ^^haha, that indeed *is* disparate impact!
2/7/2006 11:59:26 AM
^Did you get that survey from Business Week asking about your experience at NC State Business School so they could rate undegraduate business programs? Because I sure as hell tore NC State a new one!
2/7/2006 12:07:31 PM
If you want to be technical, its DISPARATE TREATMENT, not DISPARATE IMPACT, because it is not based on statistical evidence Either way though, it blows.
2/7/2006 2:53:09 PM
Someone somewhere in the School of Business has to be willing to take this seriously- I think you should make it your mission to find this person. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. What about getting The Technician to cover it? (I don't know I'm just throwing out ideas here)

^ lolhe would fall asleep on the powerpoints and junkhaha, I saw him in the gym the other day
2/9/2006 5:31:24 PM
human resources is gay and everything.. but I can't be the only one attracted to her
2/19/2006 6:16:46 PM
she gives off that vibe doesnt she? funny how shes an HR person too
2/19/2006 7:07:05 PM
I agree, she does give off some kinda vibe, its especially apparent when you talk to her in person. "there's something about Jodi........"[Edited on February 19, 2006 at 10:57 PM. Reason : .]

2/19/2006 11:51:08 PM
am I the only one who seems to be a little bothered by all the damn quizzes?
2/22/2006 5:27:44 PM
I actually think their fair game. I like being able to miss/ screw up 6 outta the 16 quizzes and still get 10 decent /good grades in. besides, so far i have only started studying for them while in class the same day, coz what she talks about during on her slides, comes on the quiz 20 minutes later. The only bad part though, is it makes me have to attend class!!!
2/23/2006 4:38:45 AM
I completely owned that test.
2/24/2006 10:34:35 AM
seemed pretty straight forward. does anyone remember what they put for the eLearning, type of statement, and black/white video questions? thanks
2/24/2006 10:56:34 AM
black/white i put the one that said the older guy was hiring her based on race and the younger guy was attracted to the other woman. what type of statement are you talking bout? not sure if i even remember the question, lol. e learning i believe i said was not a long process and not time consuming.
2/24/2006 11:35:43 AM
okay, i put the same two answers. as for the statement one, it was either the statement of condition, performance, or quality... i'm pretty sure i put condition, but that was the trickiest for me
2/24/2006 12:22:35 PM
The video question was both B and C, i believe. Race/Attraction scenario and the toughness in chosing similarl job applicants
2/24/2006 1:09:36 PM
yeah, but the term "under-qualified" was used in part C...i thought they were talking about equally-qualified persons
