Okay, so I've never filed taxes before, but I started working in August 2005, so I'm assuming I need to. It's just a part time job, but I don't really know what to do. They gave us our W2 with our last pay stub, but I'm quite the n00b at this whole thing.

Would TurboTax be easiest? Or I think I saw some of the tax forms at the library...

Just don't know where to start.

http://www.wwwebtax.com/deductions_z_other/standard_deduction.htm

going by that, i was gonna say that i definitely didn't make $5000. but, i'm still dependent, (since parents pay for school) and i know i made over $1000.

$7.50 an hour, 11 hours a week, about 16 weeks...

yeah, definitely 1040EZ, it's one page.

turbotax would be overkill, sorta like trying to give a roofie to a frat groupie.

turbotax is fool-proof. literally. all you do is follow the instructions. i'd definitely recommend filing a 10-40EZ on their website. They charge $9 to file the federal for you, and I think to file for state it's free. Or you can fill out everything and then file it yourself but it's much faster/easier online.

They seriously tell you where to get ALL of your info, and the only thing you need is your income from last year...whoever did your taxes last year should have that information.

^what about if you've never done taxes? for income, i guess i was just gonna use the running total from last year's pay stubs....

i'm so uninformed/dumb about this whole thing. but i am gonna try to stop by the library today and see if that was indeed tax forms i saw.

Seriously.

1040EZ.

All the shit you need is on the W2.

It will take you five minutes.

^^^have you never PAID taxes, or have you never had a job before?

If you've never had a job/never had to file before, you can still fill out a 1040EZ. Just do it online. It's way simpler than filling out the form at the library, especially if you don't know what you are doing.

well, i think i may have filed once in the past few years with my parents, because the stock my dad "bought" us (me and my 2 brothers) earned more than $800, i guess. but all i did was sign something or another.

blah, i was running late today, so no library. but i'm at harrelson monday and friday, so hopefully i'll remember then.

does anyone know the deadline that employers have to mail out the information necessary to do your taxes?

i heard it was january 31st, but I wrote all my employers back at the turn of the new year to inform them of my new address. as of this evening I still have not gotten any of the forms.

I understand that mail service down in New Orleans is unusually slow (lots of people came back, but relatively few postal employees did so they're bogged down) but I worry that one of my employers (had 2 jobs in the state) flat-out refused to send my papers

The filing requirements for a single person being claimed on another persons tax return is 5000, unless you had unearned income.

If you didnt make over 5000 then you dont have to file. The only reason I would file is if you withheld state or federal income tax.

^^okay, my parents still claim me as a dependent, correct, b/c they're paying for school, etc. so under that clause, since i made more than $800, i need to file.

does that sound right?

I did e-file through tax slayer. It's free for federal and state and they direct deposit my refund within 10-18 days.

MY friends started filing their taxes and they clicked the little block that said that they were a relief worker for Hurricane Katrina/Rita, and TurboTax apparently said it couldn't compute the taxes since no one has yet figured out how to handle this.

I haven't tried this yet, but has anyone else heard anything about this?

If you had unearned income over 800 you need to file then. Unearned income includes interest, dividends, unemployment compensation, etc.

1040ez your don't have kids, I think, you're a dependant, and you probably don't make over 10,000.

It takes about 2 minutes if you have a pulse.

I'm going to see if H and R Block can't help me with this one.

I switched my residency from NC to SC in November, so I have two months worth of pay in SC as opposed to NC (about 8k). I file my taxes in SC for that amount of time and they claim I owe like $1800 worth of taxes for 2005. WTF?

Oh yeah, might want to inform them that I was a part-time resident. That makes a difference

Hmm, you're going to have to fill out the normal 1040a, then.

[Edited on February 5, 2006 at 10:54 PM. Reason : Itm ight be worth h&r if you don't know how to do it]

You will want to contact either H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt about this (you can call them for info without actually doing taxes with them). In the next few days when I get my tax forms, I'll do my filing, and since I was affected by Katrina and Rita, I'll send you any info I run across about benefits for relief workers.

you taking the standard deduction, whatever that is?
if your student loan interest is more than the standard deduction is (it's in the thousands), then i really feel sorry for you
