Wow. Look out Firefox.

here's the download from MS - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/default.mspxI have a Mac at home and don't have admin rights on my work PC, so no beta for me I suppose.... or just go here to avoid that hideous splash screenhttp://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/ie7betaredirect.mspx[Edited on February 1, 2006 at 8:26 AM. sooooo....did it stop sucking?
2/1/2006 9:04:16 AM
All I have to say is you have to determine that for yourself. While MS did not reinvent the wheel, they did take the wheel and made it better - Not a resource hog like FF, still faster than FF, looks 20x better than FF, unique features, eg, Quick tabs, when you open up multiple tabs you do not comprimise any screen space, etc etc. So yeah, they used ideas from other browsers, but what app, or basically anything, that you know of that has not used someone's idea? At least what ideas they used from other browsers they did a very good job of implementing them. As far as how good its security is, only time will tell.[Edited on February 1, 2006 at 9:27 AM. Also, in my opinion, it renders text much better then FF. Compare them side-by-side and you should see what I am talking about.
2/1/2006 9:29:41 AM
extensions?i think not.
2/1/2006 9:38:12 AM
They are called add-ons in IE 7.http://windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=63[Edited on February 1, 2006 at 9:44 AM. Reason : blah]

I like FF's 'Find on Page' better, since it activity looks up what you are typing.
2/1/2006 9:40:51 AM
FF takes up 120-140 mb with a few tabs open on my machine, IE7 only takes up 65mb with 2 tabs open.[Edited on February 1, 2006 at 9:42 AM. Reason : blah]
2/1/2006 9:41:57 AM
FF is using 19MB with two tabs for me right now. though usually it is around 50-60
2/1/2006 9:46:38 AM
^^ I've got about 10 tabs open and I'm at 100MB. I guess it depends on what sites are up on each tab.It would be better to compare them with the same usage (number of tabs and browsing paths followed in each tab to get to the current page).[Edited on February 1, 2006 at 9:48 AM. Reason : ^^]
2/1/2006 9:48:18 AM
I don't understand this - I had them both open a while ago, and FF was using more RAM, but now IE is using more. Anyhow.
2/1/2006 9:49:11 AM
2/1/2006 10:03:02 AM
^Ha. If memory usage was the reason I switched to FF I guess I'd be switching back.
2/1/2006 10:14:40 AM
better than beta 1, but still far from what I was hoping. firefox remains the top browser from a developer's perspective.ie css support still lacking. just give me opacity please.microsoft who advocates server postbacks with asp.net still has the browser with the nastiest postback flicker. buggy hacks like iframe double buffering, etc should not be required to prevent a epileptic seizures.
2/1/2006 10:46:12 AM
Why is MS phasing out the menubar? It's gone in IE7, and it's gone in the new Office. I'm not so sure I like it
2/1/2006 10:59:54 AM
for real...losing a menu bar is like losing an arm and a leg, or maybe just an arm
2/1/2006 11:14:17 AM
If you read the Office 12 Interface blog - http://blogs.msdn.com/jensenh/archive/category/11716.aspx - you will find that "The Ribbon" is a replacement and much much more than the menu bar was. But in those screenshots of IE7, it looks like they just removed it without replacing it with other functionality, or is that what those buttons are down on the tab bar?A terrible decision they made was in Media Player 10, I think it was, when they made the menu bar hidden by default, then all of a sudden it poped into view when you moused-outside to the top of the main viewer window. terrible, terrible functionality
2/1/2006 11:35:20 AM
Maybe I didn't give Office 12 enough of a chance, but I just couldn't seem to find what I was looking for with those big toolbars (ribbons?) at the top. ]
2/1/2006 11:35:25 AM
you can get the menu bar if you do alt+n (i think)
2/1/2006 11:45:29 AM
i can't get rid of the ugly tab baroh praise be to jebus. The just moved the disable tabs option from advanced options to general.i can't get rid of the ugly msn search bar.why the fuck couldn't they just let me put the interface back to the way it was before. I mean i could deal with everything being all ugly in regular mode, but when i switch to fullscreen i want it back the way it was. [Edited on February 1, 2006 at 11:53 AM. Reason : .]

Don't forget that this browser is still in beta. I know from a developers standpoint FF is probably still on top, but practical users are really how these companies win browser wars.Shaggy, about getting rid of the MSN search, go to 'Get Search Providers' select what you want, and set it as the default. Is it possible to have active bookmarks in IE like in FF? I have yet to figure how to do it, or even if it is possible.
2/1/2006 11:57:13 AM
betas are typically complete from a feature perspective. companies are more likely to axe features than add them.obviously users determine the success of any product, but it is irresponsible for a company like microsoft to continue as the lowest common denominator that will ultimately detract from the end user experience of users in all browsers. they had the time and the resources to revamp internet explorer, and they blew it.

FIREFOX TAKES 9 MINUTES TO LOAD
2/1/2006 12:13:51 PM
^^I agree totally with you. I still think FF has the edge on IE7, but still I am an IE fan. I am thankful for what they have did to make IE better, instead of dwelling in its shortcomings.
2/1/2006 12:16:30 PM
i dislike the icon
2/1/2006 12:26:40 PM
Woo Hoo! I have live bookmarks now.
2/1/2006 12:43:18 PM
I simply don't understand how people have loyalty to browsers and to mega corporations. unless you are part of the development effort or have some other sort of vested interest, just use whatever one works the best that day. this loyalty and disdain is what keeps inferior products hanging around so damn long (eg Netscape 4.shit)
2/1/2006 12:58:55 PM
2/1/2006 12:59:52 PM
shaggy, i quick search in the REGISTRY and you'd see how to get rid of it...[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes]delete/add ones in there that you want.
2/1/2006 1:16:36 PM
I don't have loyalties... IE7 is simply better than FF for one reasonits made by MS...
2/1/2006 1:17:09 PM
2/1/2006 1:28:37 PM
ahh damn, my bad.that's still good info for ppl taht want to add their own though dunno how to remove the bar, there's no reason to, takes up no space
2/1/2006 1:36:45 PM
it takes up tons of space.and its uglyand im never going to use it.i want my old IE interface back.and i mean for fucks sake. You can already search from the address bar (which i disable as well), so why would you need another toolbar?
2/1/2006 1:40:09 PM
wait...so crazyj is alive?i thought that nigga died or something
2/1/2006 1:49:03 PM
the tabs are retarded.Sometimes it opens a new link in a new tab... sometimes it opens another instance of IE.At least in Avant EVERYTHING openned a new tab.
2/1/2006 1:54:45 PM
tools -> internet options -> general tab -> tab settings.
2/1/2006 1:56:41 PM
http://www.brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=337189heh, my post when IE7 Beta 1 came out.All the same complaints are still valid.
2/1/2006 2:18:44 PM
Shaggythere aren't any options there that say "Don't open anymore fucking instances of IE - Contain all pages with Tabs"Also, the search bar is awesome. Most effective use of space on the whole screen. What the fuck else do you want to put there? A longer goddamned address bar? Please, smarter people than you worked on the GUI and decided that your ideas suck regarding this.[Edited on February 1, 2006 at 2:34 PM. Reason : .]
2/1/2006 2:32:14 PM
open new pop ups in a new tab.the search bar is 100% uselessSINCE YOU HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SEARCH FROM THE FUCKING ADDRESS BAR SINCE IE4
2/1/2006 2:37:31 PM
I like the search bar. I know it is almost useless, but it doesn't bother me, and the space that it takes up cannot be used by anything else.
2/1/2006 2:55:16 PM
2/1/2006 2:57:42 PM
with IE7, I think I like firefox better now than I do IE
2/1/2006 2:59:31 PM
About the Menu bar issue: I just installed IE on a XP machine that is running the Windows Vista Brio Pack, and the Menu bar is active by default.

yea when i got WMP10 and it didn't have the menu i was like hey cool its all fancy lookingand then like 10 minutes later i was like ok great, give me my menu back. All you have to do is click one button to lock the menu in place. And thats really how it should be. The option for both ways should be there.and i should be able to move my god damned toolbars around.
