If opera got that mad for this exaggerated tale of man's life, I guess we're just lucky she hasn't read a bible.

I really, truly want to know why people showed interest, much less were offended.

If the quoted passages in there are any indications as to the rest of the book, how anyone could have believed it to be true is beyond me.

I agree. He wrote a great book and just gave it the wrong catagory.

The guy made up almost everything in the book. Like EVERYTHING. I can't roll with that.

yeah, but the dude was trying to pass it off like all that shit really happened to him. I don't know, it just makes the whole thing seem like so much more of a scam to me seeing as how the dude really wanted people to think that that stuff happened to him in real life. not to mention that he's been giving advice to people in rehab when he has no clue what rehab entails. He was never even IN rehab, let alone the junkie that he portrays himself to be. the guy is a fucking fraud.

if you want to read the whole story on how they exposed him and how false the whole book is go to
http://www.thesmokinggun.com

I wouldn't really give a shit if the story only had some embellishments, but the dude seriously made up almost everything in the book. not to mention that he has repeatedly lied and said that all these accusations were untrue and that he didn't make up ANYTHING in the book. now he's backpeddling due to all the evidence against him. Dude's just a scam artist.

11 people have already filed their multi-million dollar lawsuits for the a refund on their purchase of the book (understandable) and the pain and suffering it caused them

get in on it while you can!

I could really care less what happens. I just think James Frey and his publishing company should be ashamed of themselves.

also, if you've read the book, it's hard to imagine that ANYONE could believe half the shit that the guy says supposedly happened to him. it's actually pretty funny at times because it's just so outrageous

ok, now you're making up stuff just like him. he went to rehab...the smoking gun even said:

Quote :
"While we do not doubt Frey spent time in rehab"

ive read that article, and it looks like he added the lies and embelishments to get a book deal. However, the basis of the story is true. He was an alcoholic and drug user, he went to rehab, and got clean.

Was it right for him to pass it off as the truth? of course not, but even knowing that parts (if not a lot) of the book was fiction, I still thought it was a good read.

^that's not at all what I took from the smoking gun story. there is no evidence that he was in that rehab center that I can remember from that smokinggun article.

^and dont' sit there and say I'm making shit up man. I have no reason to. and even if I was, I'm not selling it as truth in a book like he is. I don't know this guy. if you believe the dude, then that's fine, but he wasn't a fucking drug addict. He wasn't an alcholic. the guy was a college kid that drank alot and got a couple dui's, just like alot of college kids do. He smoked a little weed and that was it. If that warrants a book about getting clean, then so be it, but don't make a whole bunch of shit up so you can get a book deal and fool shitloads of people into thinking that you're some god because you overcame so much shit. Show me where there's proof that he was a drug addict and went to rehab. Nobody can verify it which is kinda odd, don't you think? I'm not saying that I know for a fact that he didn't, but after reading all the other shit that wasn't true, I just find if very hard to believe.

^and what about all the time he said he spent in prison which never happened? where he met one of the central characters of the book? Isn't that like one of the biggest parts of his story? I mean, that never even happened. Embellishments are one thing, but it's a whole other thing to just make shit up and pass if off as true.

not to mention the other million things in the story which are totally made up

I read it before any of this had come out and EVEN THEN I could tell that alot of the stuff sounded pretty far fetched.

no, thats not odd at all. those records are confidential, not public like criminal records are.

listen, im not saying hes a liar and a cheat...he is. and thats fine that you dont believe him about anything, im not trying to change your mind. im simply pointing out that you are trying to pass of unconfirmed information as fact. simply put, youre acting like your opinion is the truth, when you have no idea if it is or not.

^no I'm not at all. read what I said. I said that I couldn't say for a fact that he didn't go. BUT, there are many of those instances in the book that the smokinggun DID prove to be lies, so in my OPINION, that ruins all his credibility as a writer. the smoking gun PROVED that he didnt' spend more than 3 hours in jail (when he claimed 3 months) and they PROVED that he didn't have any warrants in NC and michigan, and they PROVED that he had NOTHING to do with the death of the girl from his high school (or even knew her for that matter).

I'm not saying that I know everything about this guy, but from the FACTS that were provided (police reports, ect), I can tell that this guy made up a whole lot of shit for his book, so who's to say he didn't make up everything? which I might add is pretty plausible seeing as how most of the MAIN parts of the book are shown to be based off of such lies.

Did y'all read to the end of TSG's article? He submitted the manuscript as fiction but was rejected by every single publisher. The publisher who eventually bought it basically told him to make some changes and recategorize it as an autobiography.

I think this was a guy who was trying to make a name for himself as a writer, and got caught up. It was either commit to a story, and become somebody or maybe miss his window for fame.
