ok so right now i play basketball and run in my and 1 low cut basketball shoes. its a decent inexpensive pair. i like them.

now i bought the New Balance 574's like 3 months ago that pretty much everyone has.

im also taking a run conditioning class and have thought about new shoes, but its only for the semester and i dont wanna get expensive shoes or anything.

would it be a good idea to use my NB's for running and just get another pair of walking around in shoes?

you get what you pay for in running shoes usually

i'd say a 75-125 nike is what you need

im not trying to spend a lot on some custom shoes. now im sure i can get some cheaper somewhere. but i dont want to go through all the fitting this and that. i would rather use what i have. but if i can find a good deal. like $50 or so for some decent shoes then ill get some other ones.

i know the shoes arent for shit, but its all i have now.

[Edited on January 30, 2006 at 9:25 PM. Reason : ok maybe a bit more than $40]

Probably better off running in your low cuts than your NB 574's. You can buy pretty good running shoes for $50-60, online or at like foot action. Personally I like adidas trainers.

Try a shoe on at a shoe store, get them to help you.

Preferably somebody that knows their shit like RO, Fleet Feet or IOS.

Then, buy it online.

When I used to run seriously (XX, track) I was a big fan of the Nike Air Pegasus and the like. Nike's worked for me, but a lot has to do with foot shape, arch, your natural stride, etc.

My recommendation is to go and try on a bunch and find the one that feels the most like you aren't wearing a shoe, then buy a kick ass insole, something with a lot of gel and arch support.

And 1 basketball shoes should be used for basketball and basketball only (especially if you play a lot)...Use the NBs for walking around in and get a new pair of shoes for running and running only...Walking gait is much different from running gait...So, if you've been walking around in the NBs for 3 months then the wear pattern is consistent w/ a walking gait and won't be as effective at cushioning/stabilizing while running...

My suggestion is to get a pair of decent running shoes $70 to $80 range at Raleigh Running Outfitters (7459 Six Forks Road, 870-8998)...It's a great store and not just because I'm sponsored by them...If you don't want to leave your apartment, http://www.roadrunnersports.com is great for running shoes...If you're on a budget, you can sometimes find last year's model of the same shoe at $20 to $30 cheaper than current retail...

PS Stay away from those damn Nike Shox!!!

i used to run in 574's, but soon realized they were crap for running. i bought a pair of nike shox oz for the sole purpose (no pun intended) of running. i think i got them for around 90 and i have not regreted the purchase. they take a lot of the shock out of running long distances that the 574's can't do.

And heavy as fuck for no reason too.

boanest: Shoes are really only going to be good for running for ~6 months anyway, after that it's time for a new pair. I got a good pair of Asics(sp?) from DSW for 56 bucks. They are fairly light and are extremely comfortable. I have a couple of other pairs for really long runs and races, but i keep them in the closet most of the time. for run conditioning, you just want a pair that fits you correctly and wont fall apart.

the class is tuesday and thursdays. we have to run a 10K race. we arent on the track every class meeting, but when we are, its no less than 25 minutes of running. pretty much working our way for the race.

i also run a lot at the gym. treadmill/eliptical and when the weather is decent i run outside.

say i get some running shoes, should i use them on treadmill/eliptical??

rock some asics. those have been what i've been running in for the past 10 years.

yeah they are great for using on a treadmill. its just like running on any surface, improper equipment is likely to give you shin splints.

My babies:

Grid Jazz 9.

I'm working on my third consecutive identical pair. They are not the cheapest or the most expensive, but they work well for my purposes. Once they are worn out for running, I just bum around in them. Saucony makes a solid shoe. Also heard good things about Brooks. Heck, they work for Scott Jurek. I think they can handle a run conditioning class.

Ya, Brooks and Saucony have worked well for me. I've ran on Brooks for the last two years up to 90 mpw and they work out well. But I'm only 120 lbs so I'm not sure how they would work out for a heavier dude.

NIKE sucks for running shoes. stick with new balance, but not the bullsh!t pair you have. get a higher end new bal . . . also brooks makes pretty good runner sneakers also.

check out the outlet at smithfield - i *believe* there is a nike and a reebok store there.

^it all depends on your feet. nb and brooks SUCK for me. i've tried every brand on the market and have been fitted. i have to wear nike or saucony - only ones that are comfortable and fit my feet. and it doesn't matter how much they cost. got for fit above all. i've had $130 nikes that i loved but one of the best pairs i've ever had was a pair of $25 outlet clearance nikes. found a pair of saucony's that fit like a glove at ROSS the other day for $30.

I can top that. I got my last pair for $15 on clearance / closeout + buy one, get one half price at Rack Room. They retail for $70.

Go to Athlete's Foot in Cameron Village.. they can fit you in the proper shoe, and they don't all cost a fortune. I personally like the Saucony Hurricane, but that's just what works best with my foot/arch and comfort while running.

I run in a pair of Nike 2:40s based on the Shox design. 2:40 in this case is the brand name, but also the marathon time.

It all depends on your body, the shape of your foot, your running style, etc.

CV in Raleigh fits running shoes? I ought to check them out.

The last two sets of running shoes I bought had to be "broken in" so to speak. Which is odd, since I never have to break in running shoes.

I always have two pairs of running shoes. The one's I run in now are nike shox (they were 20 bucks on sale) then I have a pair that I have already broken in (adidas climacool) so when I bust a shock (which I am expecting soon) I have another pair lined up. Then the process recycles.

I would suggest finding out what type of shoe you need (I need ones for pronators (sp?)), then find shoes that fit to that. But I say, if you do like what you are running in now, don't change. I heard someone say that he has a $10 pair of Spauldings from K-Mart and he loves them.

And I really try not to walk around town in my running shoes. It farks with my feet.

Fleet Feet in Carborro will let you take them for a test ride in the parking lot. Better than running in circles at Dick's if you ask me.
