This is the story of talented and tormented Daniel Johnston, a manic-depressive genius singer/ songwriter/ artist, revealed in this portrait of madness, creativity and love.I had never heard of this film until about five minutes ago. Truth be told, I'd never heard of Daniel Johnston. But damn, I REALLY wanna see this movie.Just watch the trailer: http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony/devilanddanieljohnston/trailer/BAD. ASS.

I saw Daniel Johnston at Kings a few years back. One of the songs he plunked out on his parlor-sized acoustic was the most beautiful song about unreciprocated love I've ever heard. Unfortunately, as far as I know, it's not on any of his recordings.I bought a t-shirt with one of his drawings of Captain America on it and asked him to sign it. He wrote his name in gigantic letters across the front. I need to frame that shit.Wesley Willis was an extremely friendly person and a fantastic visual artist, but his music was all gimmick. Daniel Johnston can write a fucking pop song.[Edited on January 27, 2006 at 11:35 PM. Reason : d]

2/27/2006 7:47:02 PM

This movie is beautiful. And sad.But really good. Like, REALLY good. I liked it way more than I'd expected I would. This definitely gets my seal of approval. A lot like New York Doll, but FAR more epic.
6/16/2006 2:27:14 AM
The brother of Daniel's best friend that's interviewed in the movie a lot came to see it tonight. That was somewhat neat.

This brings a tear to my eye, but Thursday will be the last day we'll be showing The Devil and Daniel Johnston. I would highly recommend coming out to see it, and hopefully somebody else will pick it up/keep it after we're done with it.

His organaire sounds about 10x better than mine did before I threw it the fuck out.All you could hear was me mashing on the keys. Shit takes like five seconds to make a damn note.
6/19/2006 4:41:32 PM
tight-azz movie.
6/20/2006 12:01:39 AM
'Twas good. The plane story was CRAZY.It wasn't a revelation of a film from my perspective, but I've also got shit-tons of Johnston stuff so I already knew a lot of the deal. God knows how much archival stuff they culled this from, though.
6/20/2006 2:44:02 AM
seems like he recorded half of his life in some sort of way.great movie, btw.
6/20/2006 2:59:00 AM
I saw it Saturday; it was awesome.By the way, are you in charge of the music or something over there spooky? I heard I'm From Barcelona playing.
6/21/2006 1:07:53 PM

6/21/2006 1:18:04 PM

Looks like another shitty documentary about some fucked up obscure musician to me.[Edited on June 21, 2006 at 6:13 PM. Reason : see: "Haack: King of Techno" for another example of the loser musician documentary genre]
6/21/2006 6:09:09 PM
