you'd think

but its supposed to help drop weight and its not harsh on your body which is what i need

-can't do much running b/c my knees are so messed up i can barely walk up stairs and i have back pain. so i figured somethin like this for a starter. you know, strengthen my muscles some, cut some weight like that first, then push my body more

[Edited on January 25, 2006 at 8:29 PM. Reason : flame away i dont care, not like im gonna do it in public till i drop weight anyway]

I tried it, hard as fuck for whities. Also, I've seen some really tubby belly dancers, so I'd be dubious on how good of a workout it is...

there used to be a bellydancing class offered through menasa... i was one of the first students (even though im white ) and i had a blast... its an incredible workout even though it looks like your not doing much at first... unfortunatly, the girl that was teaching it lost the room we had class in and then i think she's just really busy this semester, so won't be teaching... not sure though, but i can update you if i get any info

I've seen soft belly dancers...but I have heard that it's a good workout if you keep at it.

my best friend brought me back a little belly dancing kit when she visited hawaii this christmas. it has finger cymbals, jewels that go around the navel and a little instruction book. i haven't really taken it too seriously but i think it'd be fun to do. the instruction manual wouldn't be enough to become any kind of expert, but it's a nice start.

May not be for you then. All the hip wiggles and stuff could be detrimental.

I love it tho. If you find a class, let me know I have some dvd's... The Goddess Workout dvd woman sucks... really sucks. She's hot to watch, but they don't show what she's doing with her feet or other important parts. I have a copy of Fat Chance Bellydance that's really cool and fun tho.

I wanna do it too! I need to workout, and I like to trick myself into thinking I'm not by doing stuff like dance or sports... the tricky thing is, it's kinda like sex... you gotta have another person :-/

I'm pretty sure they have bellydancing lessons at Marrakesh Cafe on Hilsborough Street.

On a side note, pilates is an AWESOME way to tone up, lose weight, and not put stress on your knees. I have bad knees as well and running is out for me but by swimming and doing pilates I get in really great shape.
