The pf chang thread got me wondering where do you guys go when you crave chinese. I really hate super cheap chinese but not always willing to dish out a lot of money for it all the time. List where you go and what you get if you don't mind.Don't bother mentioning Shanghai Express (lo mein and the dumplings aren't bad) or Golden Dragon (ate there once was the worst chinese food I've ever had).[Edited on January 25, 2006 at 5:15 PM. beansprout is pretty good and cheap!i usually get the kung pao chicken, steam rice, egg roll, and soup..its a combo dinner and it costs about $6.40[Edited on January 25, 2006 at 5:12 PM. Reason : s]

never had beansprout, but pearl is good.
1/25/2006 5:14:22 PM
where is bean sprout, are all of these places pretty close to campus?
1/25/2006 5:16:41 PM
beansprout is good but costs more... i grew up on fast food, so i usually tend to be a fan of mall chinese although the sesame chicken's spices at the hong kong in plaza west (where western intersects with jones franklin) is really good and not very expensive. they also have fries there oddly enough.

cheap chinese:shanghai express > golden dragongood chinese:five starenough said

when i was in raleigh i really liked neo china on glenwood. similar to pf changs but pretty good. there is a place up on new bern that has great food but you'll need to request the chinese menu (it is more authentic than their american menu)
1/25/2006 5:20:41 PM
neo china felt more like you were paying for the atmosphere rather than the quality of the food everytime i've been there.
1/25/2006 5:21:58 PM
maybe but then i always ate lunch so it was cheaper
1/25/2006 5:22:58 PM
I've been digging Five Star lately. ~$13/plate. [Edited on January 25, 2006 at 5:23 PM. Reason : l]
1/25/2006 5:23:18 PM
yea beansprout is on hillsborough beside the waffle house
1/25/2006 5:27:13 PM
there's really not any great chinese food in raleighthey NEVER get general tso's rightthe kung pao is NEVER seasoned correctlyand the lo mein usually is either sticky or blandso basically you can't find decent chinese in raleigh
1/25/2006 5:29:41 PM
^fuck
1/25/2006 5:32:44 PM
this sounds familiar
1/25/2006 5:34:28 PM
All those Pearl/Bean Sprout/etc places are the same. I'm pretty sure all the food comes from the same distributor and with them all having the same menu there really isn't much difference in any of them. Golden Dragon is like the same shit, but somehow slightly lower grade. But hey, Chef-Boyardee is some pretty low grade stuff and it is still pretty tasty, so whatever.
1/25/2006 5:43:08 PM
as crappy as most of the chinese food here are, im honestly getting used to it.i like going to mama wok's (towards preston), royal china buffet in north raleigh, and neo china for dim sum. i wouldnt rate these as the best, but tolerable at best. [Edited on January 25, 2006 at 5:57 PM. Reason : ]
1/25/2006 5:57:29 PM
yeah i hate how they all get there food from the same place, is there no inbetween. its either pay out the ass or empty the change from yoru pocked and eat the exact same thing every other cheap place serves.
1/25/2006 5:58:48 PM
The boy and I like to go to 35 Chinese on Kildaire Farm Road. Apparently, it has been around for a long time and popular with the locals.

1/25/2006 6:47:01 PM
Personally I like Beansprout much better than Pearl or Shanghai Express, and for the most part better than Golden Dragon. But that's just me.

I didn't like five star when i went there, but i do like NeoChina....the neochina in cary has a dimsum deal on weekends for lunch. Its really good and filling. They bring cart after cart of desserts, potstickers etc.

1/25/2006 9:24:08 PM

1/25/2006 9:47:52 PM
Neochina is great! It's around 7ish for lunch, which was enough for two meals. I'm a fan (and it helps since I work right down the streat )
1/25/2006 10:20:21 PM
i like Pearl.
1/25/2006 10:20:51 PM
Red Dragon is good.. hard to get a seat some nights.. other nights its empty. Check out Imperial Garden too; its not too pricey.. I've been going there for over 15 years.
1/25/2006 10:35:02 PM
Pearl is awesome. The Shrimp and Broccoli is great stuff.
1/25/2006 11:16:39 PM

1/26/2006 12:18:30 AM
Where is Imperial Garden?Red Dragon is good too, I had almost forgotten about it. I tend to think of take-out and not the more sit-down style places when I'm thinking of Chinese...
