"Most women are diagnosed with HPV on the basis of abnormal Pap tests. A Pap test is the primary cancer-screening tool for cervical cancer or pre-cancerous changes in the cervix, many of which are related to HPV. Also, a specific test is available to detect HPV DNA in women. The test may be used in women with mild Pap test abnormalities, or in women >30 years of age at the time of Pap testing. The results of HPV DNA testing can help health care providers decide if further tests or treatment are necessary.

No HPV tests are available for men."

http://www.cdc.gov/std/HPV/STDFact-HPV.htm

And another happy fact from the CDC:

"Approximately 20 million people are currently infected with HPV. At least 50 percent of sexually active men and women acquire genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. By age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have acquired genital HPV infection. About 6.2 million Americans get a new genital HPV infection each year."

There is no test for men.

If you have em, the doctor will freeze them off, but they are likely to come back at some point.

If you don't have them, you can still give a girl HPV. But hell, somebody's gotta do it.

If you see a blemish that you think may be a wart, you can swab it with a mixture of vinegar water and if it is a wart it will turn white. It's exactly what they would do at the doctor's office.

I use to work with the AIDS service organization, helping with their sex education and awareness program. . .so my brain is full of weird stuff.

I learned a lot about poverty and ignorance through my volunteer work. A lot of the people we served were people who did not have the financial resources in place to buy food, much less medicine. I also learned just how little young people know about STDs and sex, thanks to parents who are unwilling to talk to their children and an educational system that still operates under an abstinence only sex-ed policy. Hmph.

that test for HPV is not really the one for warts. The warts are caused by the same virus but when dealing with paps the strains are different.

^^The HPV test that is in association with an abnormal pap checks for the strains of HPV that have been known to cause cervical cancer (I believe there are 2). They can cause genital warts, but many women won't ever get them, hence why a yearly pap is important for women (although that doesn't seem to be the issue in this thread).

Cold sore? Herpes. Wart on your finger? HPV. Granted, neither of those cause genital warts, but that's how broad the herpes virus is.

As for the 80 percent of women who will acquire HPV infection by the age of 50 statistic, a large percentage will test positive for it, be re-tested on intervals, then find that it "disappears" 1-2 years after the initial positive test.

The more you know...

no...

cold sores are herpes of the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). not HPV.
HSV1 causes cold sores while HSV2 causes gential herpes.

HPV, as already stated, causes cancer and gential warts.

two different disesases.

what would make you think it could only be transmitted during sex - do you think it only travels in sperm? did you even logically think about it before posting

and interestingly enough, you can get either simplex in either place via oral sex.

but i just want to reiterate that HPV =/= HSV

HPV does not cause herpes/cold sores/fever blisters

there are many strains of herpes, only one of which is considered an STD.

For example, chicken pox is a herpes virus.
