Saw a Chery today on the road.First Chinese car I have seen.China is going to export them to the US soon.

^^Heard about their plans to come to the US. Malcolm Bricklin is behind the effort (remember the Yugo? Bringing that over was his idea too.) What I find funny is that, in China, they were recently sued (successfully, I think) by GM. GM called them out because their Chery QQ was basically a carbon copy of the Chevy Spark; Chery basically reverse-engineered the Spark and then (I would assume) changed the styling somewhat. I'm assuming that one won't be coming over here..
1/24/2006 7:46:30 PM
china is actually going to have to come up with something original to come to the usaeverything they do is copies over therethat shit wont fly when they hit the us shores
1/24/2006 8:20:45 PM
Malcolm Bricklin? One more failed endeavor and he'll have a hat trick.

If those Chinese cars are cheap enough, they'll sell. it will be interesting to see how they hold up

^^ very true. Wal-mart car lots any one? There are a bunch of articles out there on safety (or lack of). Many of the cars companies like Geely, Cherry, etc plan on bringing over don't pass basic crash tests. This Rodeo knockoff gets a Zero on the TUV 40mph frontal crash test...http://paultan.org/archives/2005/10/07/jiangling-landwind-x6-crash-test-outside-view/http://paultan.org/archives/2005/10/07/jiangling-landwind-x6-crash-test-passenger-cabin/Legs? Who needs legs when you can buy another chinese suv for $14k?But if they learn from their mistakes early on they'll be up there with the other asian car makers in no time. -- Dave[Edited on January 25, 2006 at 9:19 AM. they just have to make sure that their quaility control procedure is up to date. When Japanese cars first came out, there reliability was crap. Then in the 70's-80's, Japan started to implement quality contol throughout the process of manufacturing. Took America by suprise. A decade or two later and US is still lagging behind, but they are closing the gap.
1/25/2006 9:33:03 AM
China is investing heavily in R&D.They'll be fine in the next two decades.First models are probably going to be shit all around but they'll catch on.Sucks for GM though.
1/25/2006 9:41:27 AM
china's main (only) resource is cheap man power. they just copy things, make them poorly (read: old technology), and just sell them ultra cheap. it takes them years to reverse engineer something into even working, then it takes them another few years to make it an actual substitute good instead of an inferior one. by that time, in a market heavily influenced by technology, they're a generation behind and the cycle starts again. they just take over making the cheap (older) stuff.
1/25/2006 10:28:54 AM
like a pinto...
1/25/2006 10:39:43 AM
its funny, cause most everyone in this thread is in denial about China's capabilities.
1/25/2006 11:15:35 AM
^thats right, We'll stick with daewoo's and kia's. Although daewoo dont make cars anymore. I guess that whole thing about the electrical shortage that causes engine fires wasn't as popular of a feature for their cars. But seriously, if china steps up to the plate to manufacturing cars for the US, they will prolly flood the market.
1/25/2006 12:55:02 PM
^^no one is in denial about their capabilities, everyone knows they are the manufacturing giant that we were 100 years ago.Everyone that thinks China is going to turn from manufacturing giant to industrial wondercountry overnight is retarded. Their educational infrastructure is still lightyears behind the other major powers, as is their industrial culture. Not to mention their design culture.
1/25/2006 12:59:57 PM
Speaking of crash tests- have they gotten to the point of passing the gov't tests to allow them to be sold in the US? Also, when are the first ones supposed to be on the market?
1/25/2006 1:56:50 PM
I was talking about Geely, which will be here 2008 and will sell for less than $10,000.
1/25/2006 3:23:07 PM
1/25/2006 4:28:01 PM
^^ what size, etc... will this Geely car be? will there be more than one model?
1/25/2006 6:17:41 PM
^yes, there will be compact, sedans, pick-up (i think)
1/25/2006 9:39:32 PM
^^^ I meant for the US markets. I think 2002 was the last year or was it 2004, can't remember
