So? I know HOW to steal it, I want to know what the ramifications are if caught. Do they periodically check your box to see if you've fucked with it? How would they know that you're doing it otherwise?Any advice would be appreciated.I did a search on this topic and didn't come up with anything regarding the penalties for this (but you know how the search tool is...)

i've done contract cable work for years. there are legal remifications, however they are rarely enforced. they will try to sell you onto getting cable or simply cut you. that's it, nothing big to it. don't go around breaking their equipment. you piss off the tech enough that's when they start singling you out
1/23/2006 6:19:49 PM
Look up NC law ... varies by state.Even if you didn't get jailtime, the fines, community service, and hassle of the whole thing. How much TV do you watch and/or can you not get movies elsewhere?[Edited on January 23, 2006 at 6:44 PM. Reason : somebody with premie put this in: photos/00441080.jpg]

usually they just "zap" your cable hookup so it will not work anymore....have had it happen to a couple of friends
1/23/2006 6:49:08 PM
1/23/2006 6:50:39 PM
yeah, not much of a penalty, they'll just cut it
1/23/2006 7:26:57 PM
i did this at my first apartment (with the help of the oh-so-cute cable guy) and i had free standard cable for about 4 months. they did a routine check, found out i wasn't paying for all the channels i was getting, and they just cut my service right there. they left a note on my door saying "if you'd like to change your cable subscription please call ..... "nothing bad happened to me
1/23/2006 7:43:23 PM
Nada. Someone else fucked up our apartment cable box, and they tried to accuse me of it. I threw them out, told them shut it off they werent charging me, and never heard a word about it. Course it was a box for like 20 apartments and they were apparently accusing *everyone* becuase lots of service was fucked.Course, helps I didnt actually do it and would gladly get a lawyer becuase I hate TWC but anyways. That and I can prove our apartment is hooked up to two seperate services anyways (they've totally screwed that box still, the tech is incompetent)[Edited on January 23, 2006 at 7:48 PM. Reason : .]

firing squad for the 2nd offense
1/23/2006 7:48:59 PM
The key is (from someone who knows) to give 20 people or so cable, so that if they do try to chase you down, there is no proof you did it, it could have been any of the 20 people.
1/23/2006 8:02:24 PM
until i moved into this apartment the cable guy always hooked me up... in the last place they would randomly add a charge every three months... i would call and bitch and say that i didn't ask for it and that I wouldn't pay for it... the charge would go off, and nothing ever happened.

Thanks for the info-- I'm not actually interested, a buddy of mine is (I don't watch or even own a TV).I'll let him know. Thanks!

i was getting cable for free and one day the cable dude knocked on my door and told me i had been getting it for free and they were turning it off, but they gave me all these pamphlets to sign up for service. they were pretty polite about it, surprisingly.
1/23/2006 11:07:16 PM
how poor are you to steal cable?
1/23/2006 11:40:20 PM
pple can get paid to report you so dont tell your enemies.
1/23/2006 11:47:17 PM
^^dude, my cable bill is $100/month. I'm sure could use $100 for something else.
1/23/2006 11:56:10 PM
basic cable is not 100 dollars. you're fucking yourself.
1/24/2006 12:05:36 AM
absolutely nothing except they ask u to stop
1/24/2006 1:08:21 AM
you cant steal digital or i would be stealing it.
1/24/2006 1:15:05 AM
you can steal it, however it's more money/trouble to get the equipment than it's worth.
1/24/2006 1:49:54 AM
If you want all the channels it's easier to buy satellite and one of the non security enforced boxes. Direct TV got pretty good at stopping that after all the cards started popping up that let people get all the channels. Since satellite is a broadcast stream you just need the correct encryption to see all the channels. It used to never change. I don't know what the deal is now but it was pretty cool for a few years when I watched it.
1/24/2006 7:47:45 AM
when i worked at time warner i knew a guy who's job it was to "audit" the boxes. basically he drove around in DURHAM, checked boxes and disconnected people who were stealing or had not paid their bills.anyway, he said the ones who shot at him or came at him with a baseball bat got to keep their free cable.

I don't. It's not worth stealing. Plus my roommate pays for it, so I just leech off him.
1/24/2006 8:16:29 PM
we get free cable at my place in atlanta apparently because i have high speed internet through cable. I called Comcast up and told them, and they told me not to worry about it and that I wouldn't be able to get Internet if they placed a filter on my line.If Comcast wasn't such a shitty cable provider in Atlanta, I'd probably stick with the cable, but I subscribe to DirecTV

plus, we are talking about the same companys that claim that if you run a wirless network, or share net between more than 1 adress. you are a thief. TWC and Comcast have both, in the past, gone after people becouse they had a shared net acount with 2-3 surounding apartments. 99% of what they tell you if they come out to your apartment is bs. Strait from the company handbook bs, but bs nonetheless. hey ALWAYS assume you are at fault, they ALWAYS will claim it is your pc/cable/router that is the problem, not the perfect all speeds as promised uber service they provide. Its liek anyhting else, you are better off getting highspeed, then calling customer retnetion, explaing that with dsl offered for cheaper, and direct tv cheap plans, you could pay less and get all digital with tv and still have high speed internet. MOST, not ALL of the time they will at least offer a rebate, as they know there is no encentives program for stayign a customer, thus they often are willing to try and match new customer deals to keep you from leaving. And hey, when the deal runs out, pay for a month at full price, call and complain, life goes on.

^ LOL yeah, I signed up for cable with earthlink recently for various reasons* and they sent me an email with the following "reminder":*******************IMPORTANT REMINDER*******************This service is intended for one computer. If you'd like toshare this service on multiple computers, you'll need topurchase EarthLink Home Networking:http://www.earthlink.net/highspeed/extras/homenetworkingI LOLed. Who the fuck thinks they can charge for using a router these days? They must be the last company trying to pull this shit.Anyway, I'm not paying $9.95 a month to "home network."*The reason? My room mate is a deadbeat who didn't pay the TWC bill, even though he only had to come up with $20 since me and the other guy here pay for the other 2/3rds of it. So, they cut off service, and wouldn't give us a new acct until a) he pays up or b) he's off the lease. So, I had to go with Earthlink for cable internet service (even though its essentially TWC, I can actually get them to turn it on going through this route).[Edited on January 26, 2006 at 1:08 AM. 1/26/2006 1:06:31 AM
they just come knock on your door and tell you they turned it off and put a filter on the line, and give you a price list and tell you to call if you actually wanna pay for it.
1/26/2006 1:10:26 AM
maybe if TWC doesn't charge so much for their services, people wouldn't steal cable in the first place.
1/26/2006 9:38:48 AM
i just stole it cause they werent filtering the analog signal. nothing to do with price
