i dropped my membership with the nra about 5 years ago. they seem to do more harm then good these days. there was a time i had to be a member to shoot in certain matches

Ever since Bush stepped into office, I've felt comforted by the fact that I can legally wield a gun.

This may make you guys chuckle, but when I was younger, I totally thought that the whole point of private citizens owning guns was for protection against the government.

I kinda dig that notion now. Of course, my owning a gun isn't going to make a huge difference in the end. But at least I'll make some loud noises when I go down with the revolution!

the reason we have the constitutional right to bear arms is because the European governments of the time kept the peasants unarmed and with no real means to resist tyranny. disarmament of the people is a key factor in controlling them. this has been shown time and again. even in our modern age, it is important for individual citizens to have the power to resist tyranny with force. true, we haven't had to in America and as long as we can resist, we won't.

but wouldn't you say that many of these self defense instances are prompted by the bad guys having guns in the first place?

(Obviously not all of them, I'm sure that there are people that want a gun for self defense against knives or any intruder at all, but there has to be a good amount of people that use guns for self defense as a direct result of other people having guns)

Supporting gun ownership in the name of self-defense is silly. More than likely, the "bad guy" will use that same gun against the man who bought it for defense. If we mandated that every gun owner must know how to use it and be willing to use it, then that would be different.

I support gun ownership because we're uncivilized cowboys. And that's just the way it is.
