I am thinking of getting a Treo probably a 650, and I had a question that I think you pretty much have to own one to know the answer to.1. With the email, how do you set it up? Does it check directly with the server, like say at work, or does it check through a home computer? Would I be able to set it up with my work email? We use Outlook here at work, but it has to be in the Network to check it.2. Instant Messaging: Is it like the AIM I have on my standard phone that I have to check for updated messages, or like on the computer where they pop up real time.Wi-fi through Bluetooth for better surfing?

Wifi through bluetooth?1. It checks directly with the server. 2. You get notifications.

2. you can instal aim clients so its like regular aim, or do the standard phone thing

if you are going to purchase it new and not used i'd wait for the 700 unless you are a verizon customer then just purchase it now

The treo 650 comes with versamail, which is a bit buggy, but works fine for me. it will check your email automatic intervals directly over the pop3 server. you can also buy other optionsinstant messaging requires 3rd party software, like toccer (free) or verichat (not free). Verichat is more robust and acts more like real im, but toccer is... well... freeand you can indeed use bluetooth to connect to a computer with internet access. you can also use bluetooth to use your treo as a modem if you get pdanetalso, I've heard nothing but "bleh" reviews about the 700. plus, so far, there's only a 700 with windows mobile. supposedly, there's a palm version coming out, but that's not announced yet.[Edited on January 19, 2006 at 1:11 PM. Well, is there an AIM client I can put on my current phone? I've got a pretty new LG camera phone that supports weather radar and stuff like that.Other than windows, what upgrades does the 700 have over the 650?
1/19/2006 2:47:22 PM
as far as features, not much, and you can get them all (or mostly) with this softwarehttp://www.ludustech.com/ludusw/

windows mobile 5.0 is leaps and bounds ahead of palmtheres a reason that palm got rid of their former os as soon as the restructuring allowed

My opinion, don't get the Treo650. I wouldn't even get the 700w. Wait for a few months and you will see many new phones that are much much better. I had the 650 running Goodlink software. I had to pull the battery out every couple of days... I got a Windows Mobile 2003 phone and have had no bugs or reboots. I'm waiting for the Motorola Q to come out.

Yes, Good was a pain in the ass
1/20/2006 11:13:13 AM
^^^oh yeah. forgot that one.
1/20/2006 1:25:50 PM
I have the 650 running Goodlink software and have had no problems. I've been using it since September, had to pull the battery out just once to reboot.
1/21/2006 12:00:45 AM
I've never had to hard reboot my Treo 600 you people just suck at life.
1/21/2006 9:27:49 AM
ive only had to reboot my 650 once or twice since i got it in may, but that's because i like to fuck around with it
1/21/2006 11:34:53 AM
George,Just because it has a vibrate feature doesn't mean you can do that with it.
1/21/2006 10:16:46 PM
thinking about picking up the 650 on monday.any reason I shouldn't?
1/21/2006 10:48:33 PM
if you are on verizon then its STUPID to get the 650
1/21/2006 11:25:24 PM
^ why is that?
1/22/2006 6:20:24 AM
the 600 series is an older generation technology. If you're with Verizon, get a 700w since it comes with windows mobileit's kind of like waiting to buy a new year's model of a car
1/22/2006 7:25:14 AM
the 700w is also 500 dollars.... i am taking back a phone (Samsung aSCH-970) and have a 300 dollar credit (the price of the treo). Why not go with the 650 treo????
1/22/2006 5:31:16 PM
also, cnet said they "give the nod to the 650 over the 700w"!
1/22/2006 5:36:38 PM
THE REASON IS EV-DO... plain and simple. City-Wide WiFi. You can't beat that. With the 650, you're limited to the same shitty data rate that I am. While its ok for checking email and browsing some elementary sites, shit like ESPN.com takes for-fucking-ever to load.EV-DO is the heat, and you'd be a moron to fucking get the 650 over the 700 just for that simple fact alone.
1/22/2006 9:13:10 PM
maybe i'll just stick with the sch-a970.... hot phone, just thought I paid too much for it
