just curious as to if anyone else out there is experiencing any high memory usage while running firefox 1.5, my comp when running previous versions never slowed down 1 bit, now with just like 10-15 tabs open it bogs it down and I've noticed in the Task Manager that it is sucking mem usage up. Even after I've shut down most tabs and have 1 or 2 open, like right now, it's still like 93,268 K, I am imagining things or has anybody else seen this?as for the system it's a Dell Dimension 8400, P4 3.0 GHz with 1 GB RAM running Windows XP Home SP 2I've run anti-virus and spyware and everything checks out?anybody out there in tech land have a clue?

yea mine is running the same. have no tabs open and RAM usage is ~90000 K.[Edited on January 15, 2006 at 11:34 PM. Reason : .]

10-15 tabs? You need to reconsider your useage.
1/16/2006 12:15:30 AM
yeah, 10-15, at least, sometimes even more, after all isn't that the great thing about firefox? the ability to use tabs and not have to load multiple instances of the same programs, for example, i load most pictures that I click off of a thumbnail into a new tab, news articles from websites into a new tab, etc.. basically I hate using the back button therefore most things I click through I use a new tab, let it load in the background, read at my leisure and then close when I'm done. I also use mulitple tabs when comparing prices and features of items that I'm doing product research on, which I've been doing alot of lately.. like I said, it used to not be a problem before I loaded this newer version, just curious as to if anybody knows if they changed anything that would cause a difference in the operation of the program?

My installation used like 130MB of memory. I quickly switched to Maxthon.

I think there is a known issue with mem usage

Maxthon ftw

definitely maxthonbut here's how to limit memory usage:1)Type about:config into the location bar and press enter2)Right click any line to bring up a sub-menu3)Choose "new">"integer"4)paste this into the dialogue that appears: browser.cache.memory.capacity5)Next click Okay6)Specify the amount in kb (about 60000 should do) in the next dialogue that appears7)Restart Firefox and happy surfing.

^That doesn't work....I have it set and it's using over a gig of ram right now
1/17/2006 7:02:56 AM
yeah, all that does is limit the browsing cache. Doesn't have anything to do with the program being a resource hog or leaking memory.

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=354828the ones that have helped me the most:Memory usage upon minimizeThere is a pref that enables trimming Firefox memory usage when you minimize all Firefox windows. This pref is for Windows only. To enable it, set config.trim_on_minimize to true using about:config. JavascriptPages with lots of (or bad) Javascript can increase memory usage. Using NoScript to control when sites can use Javascript can help in this situation. Browser HistorySetting the browser history to extremely large values will increase memory usage. Keeping the history to a reasonable level is a good idea for this reason. Fast Back/ForwardFirefox 1.5 has a new fast back/forward feature (bfcache) that vastly reduces the amount of time taken to display pages when the back/forward buttons are used. This adds to memory usage. To disable this, set browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers to 0 using about:config. You can also control the amount of RAM used instead of disabling it entirely, this is documented in the MozillaZine Knowledge Base. AdblockUsing Adblock with Firefox 1.5 is a bad idea in general, and has been reported to cause increases in memory usage. Firefox 1.5 users should use AdBlock Plus.PluginsSome browser plugins, particularly Adobe Reader and Java, can use large amounts of memory. Since plugins are not unloaded after use, restarting Firefox can help.JavaJava users should update to Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0_06. Turning off the Java Console using the Java Control Panel may also reduce memory usage.

same problem with memory. Having said that, its actually a known/old issue with this version of Firefox.

A FireFox god-father himself gives some insight into that apparent horrendous memory usage in FFhttp://weblogs.mozillazine.org/ben/archives/009749.htmlThe main factor is that up to 5 pages visted in the past (your history) are stored fully rendered for each tab. This shows why usage seemingly grows exponentially when you have many active tabs.

Works in IE, good enough for me.

Thank god I don't need 2 gigs of RAM just to surf the internets!

I'm running Opera, have 9 tabs open and its using like 75 megs of memory.

Did resetting the sessionhistory help the 'feature' memory leak?
