I have this dvd player with an HD widescreen tv...

I also have the corret HD upconversion cord hooked up... When I play a DVD, I don't get any sound and the picture is much less sharp then having it hooked up the normal way (three pronged, white, red, yellow cords)... What am I doing wrong with my setup? Will this only work with DVD's that were shot in HD? How does this work so I can use the HD upconversion that I bought?

First, what kind of "HD upconversion cord" do you have? HDMI, DVI, or component (red, green, blue)? Second, try accessing the DVD players menu (without a DVD in). Go to the display tab and make sure you have the correct output enabled (either 720p or 1080i). It is probably currently on 480i or 480p.

Do you have a digital audio cable hooked up to your receiver? Do you have a receiver? You said you had it hooked up with white, red, and yellow cables before, which is usually composite video and stereo audio...if youre sticking with stereo then you need the white and red cables hooked up still...the cable you have pictured is only for video.

i have a setup similar to this. i use a hdmi to hdmi cable and have red/white audio cable going into the back of the tv for the audio. i havent decided to shell out money for the digital audio in cause im broke. but i think it looks good for the most part. not quite hd broadcast quality but close most of the time. sometimes old movies dont look good.

so i just hook the red and white up into which jacks in the back? I know when I watch DVDs with the hd upconversion dvd player, i have to put the tv on DVI/HDCP... The box of the DVD player says "one connection for both audio and video" so that is why I am confused. essentially, I need to change the dvd player settings to the 1080i and then hook up the audio cables? There is no reciever yet, but we were looking into getting one... I imagine there is a "special" cable for that too...

well, i changed the settings on the dvd player (after a lot of fishing) and it is now on 1080i... I then connected the audio cords directly to the tv and now I have sound... Honestly, the picture doesn't look that much better than it would with a regular dvd player... I think the HD on cable, such as ESPN HD looks a little clearer, but maybe it is all in my head... either way, it works now, but I guess these HD upconversion DVD machines don't give you that much of a quality gain - am I correct?

I was also under the understanding that it was one connection for audio and video...

HDMI is audio and video. mine fucks up sometimes too. try disconnecting it and re-connecting it. you likely have a bad connection

hdmi audio works if its digital audio on the dvd. i dont know why mine never worked but i just have the hdmi cable for the video and then red/white into receiver for audio through speakers.

[b]HD programs on tv are recorded in true HD. movies on dvd arent "in HD." so movies shown on tv and sports and stuff is going to look better. there will not be movies on dvds in HD until they release movies on HD-DVDS. the upconversion of 1080i is supposed to convert it so 1080i so it sends that signal to the tv but you cant make the movie HD if its not in HD on the dvd.

^^ Youll need an HD-DVD or Blu-ray player for high definition DVD (yeah, another format war, great). Dont spend your money on either for now, one will eventually win out and you dont want to be stuck with the equivalent of a Betamax deck.

^Yeah, thats why I assumed he needed cables for sound.

I just want to clarify that I pretty much wasted my money buying this DVD player as opposed to a regular one since the difference isn't particularly substantial... correct me if I am wrong...

you are correct. youll need a HD dvd player when they figure out if theyre using HD dvds or Blu-ray. and i forgot you had a hdmi to dvi cable...you do need an audio cable for that cause thats video only. i have the samsung hd-upconversion dvd player because it came with the hdmi cable already instead of spending $50 more on on. i needed it because for some reason my tv was not showing a good picture with a regular dvd player. i tried changing all the options and this dvd player finally worked and looks great (not quite true HD quality but great none the less).

DVD's are 720*480 resolution

HDTV is 1280*720 or 1920*1080

You can see the major difference there.

HDMI supports up to 7.1 channel sound.

actually, not all dvd's are 480p... but this thread should've only been 3 posts...

Some dvd's support higher resolutions (think superbit=525 verticle lines)

I'm actually fairly impressed with some of the upconvert dvd players on the market. i compared the incredibles dvd in 480p, 720p, and 1080i... There was a noticeable difference between the qualities.

upconversion only looks better if you are upconverting to the native resolution of the display.

aka 720p for most dlps

and superbit is really the same resolution, just higher bitrate. most tv's cant do overscan for more than 480 lines of vertical anyway
