seriously it's gay

and hybrids are worse than high gas prices. A Lexus RX400h is THOUSANDS more than an equally equipped RX330 (same w/ Ford Escape vs. Hybrid Escape). You'd hafta drive an insane amount of miles to ever make up the difference. Plus, buying new batteries every so often won't be free...

Maybe the government should step in and mandate price ceilings to keep the prices down. Then you could wait in line while gas stations ran out of gas.

If you don't like capitalism, feel free to leave the country.

Gas prices here are $2.47 at the very cheapest. Premium is up to $3.00 in some places.

Just be glad you don't live in fucking Europe.

If gas prices followed every other inflation trend on other commodities, it would be even higher than it is.

ANYONE who tells me that gas prices are caused by capitalism, the "free hand," or any other bullshit is either lying or just doesn't pay attention

OPEC IS A CARTEL. There is no "free market" when it comes to oil

and the reason gas prices are going so nuts now is because they only went down so quickly after katrina cause europe saved us. now they're dropping off on the aid, and gas prices are re-inflating

but it is interesting that now that they're not $3.50 because of a hurricane, not as many people notice, isn't it?

I'm waiting until they start getting oil from the sands in Canada. Then Canada is going to run a train on OPEC, or join them. Either way they are closer and more friendly.

Canada more friendly? hah! they're just sucking up while we have the upper hand

if they ever strike oil, then those of us in the lower 48 are in for it. We'll be saying "eh" in no time

at the moment we have enough oil, but not enough refineries to meet the demand.

so, you can stop guzzling all that gas, and be more efficient. otherwise don't bitch.

Most folks don't realize that the inflation adjusted price for gasoline (called "real price" in economic terms) is still not as high as back in the 70's. You keep hearing that oil prices are at record highs.
True in "nominal terms" but not true in "real terms". Oil would have to be $90.00 plus dollars a barrel today to be equivalent to the price of oil in the 70's. We are only 2/3rds of the way there right now.

Right now, there are adequate oil supplies around the world to satisfy world demand. The problem is,
that we are not able to refine that oil fast enough to meet the demand for refined fuels around the world.

Some of this problem is due to U.S. environmental regulations on oil refineries and distillate products (gasoline). First, environmental regulations became so onerous with respect to building new refinery capacity, that oil companies just did not do it. There was not enough incentive (profit) to do so. Our refinery capacity is old and not nearly as productive as new facilities would be.

Environmentalism has costs and we are all paying those costs right here and now. The second environmental factor is all the different blends of gas that must be produced for the U.S. market. California gasoline is different from North Carolina gasoline for example. All these different states have developed different formulations for their respective states due to clean air requirements and environmental concerns of their respective political bodies.

It wasn't directed at you. Ultimately, you're gonna pay. If everybody does their part, shit will change. Otherwise, it adds up.

[Edited on January 12, 2006 at 11:32 PM. Reason : Also, developing countries are a major reason for oil prices. Blame China and India]

Nationwide gasoline prices will drop below $2.00 sometime in the spring. They might get down to $1.50 or less by the end of the year, especially if there is a downturn in the world economy.

Gasoline prices are still dictated by market forces. Demand is slightly up, and supply is slightly down. Nothing to get too worried about.

First off, let me get some of that crack you're hittin'. There's no way in the world it's gonna drop back below $2.00/gal. Why? Because WE'LL PAY THAT MUCH MONEY.

Quote :

Maybe in Kirby's Dream Land. Gas is a freaking monopoly/cartel/etc. Period. It's the sole fuel source for America's cars. There is no real, viable, and massively available alternative. Thus, it's a monopoly.

The reality is that if your tank was near "E", and you pulled into a gas station tomorrow and it was $4.05/gallon, YOU WOULD PURCHASE GASOLINE. And if you somehow think "demand" for gas will go "down", you must expect hundreds of thousands of America workers to just up and not go to work or something.

Because people think complaining/protesting actually makes a difference. 95% of the time its a short-term wave that people forgot about after a month.

If you want to make a difference, go do some research, get "in" the system, and 20 years later, rise high enough in power to make that change.
