i just formatted a 200GB and a 250GB partition

Why would you do it that way? Use PartitionMagic or some equvilant (sp) program. So much faster that way.

40 mins is probably too long. you should check the disk for erors if it ever finishes formatting.

Theres no real reason to do a full format.

To completely destory files on a drive it needs to be overwritten around 32 times.

Although 3-pass or 7-pass is typically used, the "incriminating" data can still be recovered with highly sophisticated equipment.
