i've finally found the secret to getting off my ass and going to the gym. i go immediately after work. i've been on track since the start of this year. i keep my clothes in my car and trek there right after work. if alternate between running and lifting and my intent is to go 4 days a week.

i have to lose body fat. trying to go from 14 or 15% to between 8-10%.

any pointers let me know.

While you have a good point about always being ready to go, I'd hardly call being on track for 6 days notable.

I personally prefer mornings, cuz drinking coffee at 5am and drinking coffee at 6am makes no noticeable difference.

dont alternate working out diff sections of the body

i heard its better to do everything you plan to exercise/improve on in one day
[ie, if you wanna work on your arms, abs, and some cardio, work it all into one day's worth of exercising]

i'm not claiming to be fitness guru mcgee, thats what was suggested to me though

yeah

thats some of the worst info i've ever heard

if you're tiny and trying to get swoll
go heavy on weights
and don't lift more than 3 days a week

if you're fat and want to get smaller
use more reps and less rest to keep your heart rate up

and if you want to grow muscle and lose weight
do the lifting first, cardio second

of course
i don't really know shit
and this guy is an alias

[Edited on January 7, 2006 at 1:20 AM. Reason : but yes, going to the gym before going home is KEY]

the secret to getting into the gym is finding a gym teeming with hot-ass women. That way, you look forward to it all damn day and you'll never skip.

drag along someone else with you with same goals. then you can pick on each other for being fatter/scraunier, then workout.

there's hot b!tches in there and they are all cut up and ripped. it's pretty intimidating.

i must get some results. i'm going to try to go for a straight month and see if I get any noticeable difference.

this one guy he showed before/after pics in a fitness mag swears by doing 45min of cardio after lifting each time that's how he got ripped. after lifting the last thing i want to do is cardio. his pics were 4 months apart. guy lost 15lbs and has muscles even in his face.

i go to the gym before work. but that requires you to be completely out of your fucking mind and waking up at 5:30 a.m. like i do.

after work is indeed beer and no pants time. not gym time.

today's a cardio. I plan on doing 45min on the treadmill and some ab work.

how vital is the cardio. i'm not looking to bulk up, I just want to take a bit of the excess skin (flab) off. I'm in pretty good shape, but I want to cut my body fat percentage to the single digits from my current 14%.

Hit up the elliptical machine instead of the treadmill to burn more calories and get more of a full body workout.

if you really want to burn fat do high intensity interval training (also known as HIIT)

do a little research on it i dont feel like explaining everything

oh yeah and cut all the fried food, junk food, and alcohol

^actually, there are no studies which show medium-high intensity endurance (45-60m) training is not superior to HIIIT training.

there are studies which prove 20 mins of HIIT is better then 45-60mins of LOW intensity for fat loss, but there is nothing conclusive that says HIIT is what you should be doing if you can keep your heart rate over 70-80% for 40mins.

this is a common misconception.

well all i know is i have tried both and there is a definate difference while doing HIIT. Granted you dont have the same endurance but if you arent training for a sport or something that you need great endurance it doesnt really matter.

aerobic base training is invaluable.

theres no question HIIT is a an incredibly hard work out, but one person's anecdotal evidence^^ doesnt mean anything. i have seen no studies that have backed the idea that HIIT is better for fat loss then medium-high intensity endurance training (and thats not for lack of an abundance of expert research in this area).

I can't do anything after work. It's either 4AM and I want to go to bed, or it's 8PM and I want to eat. And go to bed.
If I do it before work it's a lot easier. Then I'm not dreading it all day long.

did 45min on the treadmill yesterday. i thought I was going to die. I had to talk myself into not quitting. I thought I'd have enough energy to lift afterwards, but I headed straight for the door when I was done.

i can't stomach doing cardio after lifting it has to be one or the other. after lifting I head straight for the door. i was reading the story of how this guy got ripped up in 4 months. he lifted and did 45min of cardio 6 days a week. that is kind of extreme.

ok dude, if you planned on lifting after 45 mins of cardio you need to look up overtraining. your goal isnt to overtrain.

^^ Overtrain? I'm not in great shape at all and I do an hour of cardio (two 30 minute sets) and lift two to three times a week.

How much lifting are we talking about here?

Overtraining is doing 60 mins of cardio then on the SAME day trying to lift.

Convicts get an hour or so in the yard every day...they do NO cardio, only lift. They sure as fuck dont overtrain.

You cant do effective cardio and lifting on the same day. I know of no experts in the fitness community who thinks otherwise.

Please explain why. I've read time and time again that lifting is important in losing weight which, as Amsterdam stated, is his intended goal. It raises the metabolism for up to 24 hours after the workout and helps to prevent some of the muscle loss associated with weight loss.

What is the big deal about doing it the same day? I know it will stunt muscle growth significantly, but it's not going to stop it alltogether and he never said he wanted to bulk up. What negative consequences does a person face when they do them both on the same day?

I'm not asking to be a dick. I'm asking because I really want the answer.
