I was wondering if anyone had any specific advice regarding the best way to go about getting a used vehicle for no more than $8,000-$9,000 -- my dad (fantastic man that he is ) is paying for the car (I know that probably means I have no say in the matter ), but I'd like to try a honda or volkswagon (both of which I consider very reliable brands); however, my dad is adamant that the car is automatic (most good used hondas and VWs are manual)The thing is that I adore this 1991 Jaguar XJSit has low mileage and the owner is asking for $7,500, and I just felt like it was a good find. Does anyone have any advice on that particular vehicle (pitfalls, reasons we shouldn't consider it); I told my dad about it and he was opposed to trying a jaguar since they're 'high-maintenance' and require specialists (which we have around here anyway), but then told me to look at volkswagons -- which are German and are sort of high-maintenance too, right? Seriously, I was just wondering if anyone had any particular advice concerning the best kind and most reliable used vehicles -- my dad has just dumped all of this money into this other vehicle (1994 cougar, which was very well maintenanced) that has just eaten up transmissions like hell and we just need to find a reliable car that I can use for a couple of years without giving us migraines. Any opinions on any nice makes or models I should look into? I love the Jaguar and understand that it has to be well cared for, but I cared for my other car and am used to maintenance. Whatever dad says goes, but I thought I'd fish for some advice/opinions anyway. Thanks for reading my long rant!

Uhhh...your first repair bill will likely be twice what you pay for the car (not really but DAMN high).Insurance on an XJS can't be cheap even though they ain't all that fast.V12 = twice as much going wrong as a Jag 4.2 six cylinder.Bottom line? MONEY PIT
