Maybe its just me, but dealing with the general public every day is a very hard thing to do.This has to be one of the most mentally draining jerbs Ive ever had.Its like they intentionally dismiss whatever you say, and then they turn around and ask you what you just told them.

people that deal with smart people typically get paid more
12/22/2005 2:48:46 PM
thats why you dont get a retail job
12/22/2005 2:49:40 PM
I've only had a couple of jerbs that weren't draining in some way. If it was easy everyone would do it.
12/22/2005 2:50:41 PM
my job is easy as hell and pays well (for a student)doubt many people would do it though
12/22/2005 2:53:21 PM
Yeah retail sucks. But I think it would be better then working in the food industry. You probably could get paid more in the food industry, but I just wouldn't be able to put up with people.

12/22/2005 3:05:44 PM
why?
12/22/2005 4:42:44 PM
so the owner of a retail store CANNOT be paid well because he/she has no control over who walks through their doors?Im talking retail here, not Wall Street.
12/22/2005 5:12:25 PM
its so obvious he was making a serious statement that would be true in every single situation that could ever possibly existlets tear it apart

jerbs

the word typically must have thrown him off - it's a tricky one
12/22/2005 5:55:10 PM
Working in retail makes you realize just how fucking dumb the human race is.

Retail sucks so much

Customer service sucks so much

Retail taught me a couple of things (and mind you, this it just IMHO):1) Retail can be a lot of fun if you get to know your coworkers. You pull some several consecutive double-digt hour shifts with people, you can gain a lot of respect working with them. I think I met and learned a little something unique about 150+ people when I worked retail. 2) Only about 10% of retail employees are truly knowlegable about their job ... this includes management.3) 90% of the time, it is the customer who is slow, not the cashier. OR, the customer doesn't do enough to help speed things along for the cashier.4) Management positions are extremely political. Not always the case the best person for the job gets it. Not always the case the person that gets the position should even be in a position to manage people.5) It is a lot easier to lead people than it is to manage them. Doesn't matter how incompetent or slack a person is ... it is possible to make them want to work and be productive.[Edited on December 22, 2005 at 11:33 PM. Reason : .]

i worked at cvs for 3 years, its not really all that bad. i got to know the people that i worked with well, and also most of the customers.

^I have found that it is a lot better to work in a small store like that rather then a big one. I used to work part-time at Eckerd when I was in high school and I got to know the other employees pretty well. The management was pretty cool and they actually listened to me when I needed to talk to them about something. I also worked for Best Buy a little and it was pretty much the exact opposite. There were tons of employees (and new employees like every week) and even if I submitted a time off request months ahead of when I was required to, I still never heard back about it. Even when I was like "So what is the deal with my time off request" they were like "Huh? I didn't get one..."

i love my customer service job. of course most of my customers are out of state, so i don't have to have face-to-face interaction. just gotta know how to talk to them and things should go smoothly 95% of the time.

I got fired from the super K-mart in Greensboro several years ago.

Retail is mentally draining?what the shit?
12/23/2005 11:36:37 AM
Dear retail customers,Please learn to form a complete thought before you open your mouth to speak.
12/23/2005 12:04:28 PM
I wouldn't say dealing with customers is mentally draining; I actaully feel a lot smarter after I deal with some of the seemingly educated people that I deal with whom have no common sense whatsoever. Like the one person said, after years of doing it, you become numb to it. Dealing with people does give you a different perspective on human behavior, as you realize how idiotic some people can be. Dealing with customers is always tricky as well. You can go out of your way to give the best service and be the most polite to someone, and they'll complain on you that you didn't do X, Y, or Z for them, and you can be just as non-chalant and uncaring, and you'll get a compliment for giving great service.

I deal w/ the public at my job, and 99% of them are college students, and it STILL amazes me how stupid the general public is. It makes you want to cry to think about how retarded some people are and they don't realize it. How these folks a)make money and b) survive is beyond me...

im about to get paid $100/hr to take care of some stuff
12/23/2005 12:41:43 PM
I've worked retail for a year. The only thing draining about it is the boredom in standing around for hours with nothing to do.The christmas rush is quite fun.
