I have a friend with a 99ish i believe explorer that she wants to move to her parents house for maybe a year or two and we'd like to know what she should do keep it in storage for this amount of time. drain oil and gas? put on blocks? etc....

any ideas and websites appreciated. thanks.

i would think draining the oil would be a bad idea....but i'd definately drain most of the gas.

if you gonna store it. leave the oil in, ok so drain the gas.

if you are putting a car cover over it, then pop the windows open a little bit if its gonna be under the cover.

best advice.

def. drain the gas, and run the motor till it runs everything out of the lines. keep the oil in it, and pour some in each cylinder. make sure the tires aren't on a damp surface (dirt) and cover them with something if they're going to be exposed to sunlight. that's about it if it's just going to be for a year or two.

Serious question...Why not just put Sta-bil in the fuel tank instead of draining the gas? Is it not good for that long a time?

And a 99ish Exploder isn't a bad car...Why won't her parents just drive it to work once a month or so for her to keep it going? She could take it for oil changes every 6 months or so and it would be straight.

^that would work, but i'd still reccomend getting everything out of the lines/fuel injections. that's kinda hard to do on a FI vehicle. i've had good results with stabil in the tanks of boats/jet skis, but i've still seen the smaller orfices of carbs, etc. get gummed up a little even with the stabil.

spray formula 303 on any of the rubber/vinyl surfaces.

do you just want to blow it up, or do you want to do someone in?

blowing it up, just detonate a primary charge on the gas tank

killing someone, you need to wire the ignition circuit or a similar user activated hot to detonate the primary charge.

I'd say that would be the easiest solution, run it once a month or so, and keep it under a cover the remainder of the time.

Though, as many others have asked, what's the logic of storing a '99 Explorer for two years? Unless there's some sort of sentimental attachment, it doesn't seem to make much sense.

If you are storing it for less than a year you really do not have to go through all that. My 87 jeep with 200,000+ miles on it sat in a barn for roughly two years in storage and was only ran every 2-3 months just to heat it up and drive down the road and back. I never took the tires off. It cranked on the first time each time I went up there and I have driven the shit out of it since removing it from storage with no problems. The tires are still in good condition as well.

I do highly recommend putting some of this stuff in the tank prior to storage.

It conditions the gas for storage and prevents it from gumming up in the tank. For the 3$ it will cost its well worth it.

If she is storing the vehicle at her parents put some gas conditioner in the tank and have them drive it around the block every month or so while it is sitting there.
