Okay so I need to something active.. It has been too long..I was thinking about ballroom dancing or belly dancing but then I talked to this lady @ poker last night and she told me she has been kick boxing for six years and she is in great shape. So I looked up a Tae Kwon DO school today called: World Tae Kwon DO Ctr in Cary (off Kilmayne). He says come in tomorrow @ 715 and try it out. It will be somewhere in the range of 90-99 dollars a month and you can come in up to 3 times a week-- plus everyone I talked to seemed very professional.Anyone taken classes anywhere else? I really want to stay in the Cary area or close by if possible. Thanks yo. [Edited on December 19, 2005 at 5:03 PM. Reason : blah]

Tae Kwon DO will teach you discipline
12/19/2005 7:03:05 PM
i used to take tae kwan do... it is mainly to teach self defense as opposed to getting you in shape... if you want to get in shape, i'd suggest kick boxing.
12/19/2005 7:03:30 PM
kick boxing, on the other hand, will teach you to be a lazy fuck
12/19/2005 7:03:53 PM
i know regular boxing would work

I also used to study Tae Kwon Do...while I also played soccer (among other sports) I sparred competitively and had rigorous 3 hour training sessions multiple times a week. I can assure that if you are serious about getting into shape, then start sparring and find a GOOD sparring instructor. Many of the schools are more family oriented and about making money instead of taking the time to work one-on-one with the students. The man I used to train with is in Winston Salem, and he ALWAYS worked out with us...as opposed to the school I started at, where instead of giving me the training I wanted they were ready to ship me off to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado...minor detail that I had SCHOOL to worry about and couldn't just up and leave. ANyway...its all about what you put into it. Kick boxing will give you faster results...you have to work your way up in tae kwon do, but I can assure you it is WELL worth it. I miss it terribly and wish that I was still competing.

hey JSnail... weren't we supposed to fight each other at some point back in the day?

I'd suggest kick boxing to give you the fastest results. I'm just not a fan of Tae Kwon Do at all. I personally studied Muay Thai, and Brazilian jujutsu for over 10 years. I found the kickboxing aspect of Muay Thai to be much more fun and effective than any of the other stuff i've learned/seen of other styles. But then again, you will only get out what you put in.

I did kickboxing in college......err five years ago and lost a ton of weight. It was a lot of fun but not too much sweating, I also took a Hi/Lo course right after to get my heartrate up.Tae Kwon Do will kick your ass. My bf's bro is like third degree black belt, in amazing shape and can jump like six feet in the air standing still. Crazy shit but awesome.

muay thai kickboxing, just dont ever skip out on practice and youll be in great shape. 3-4 times a week, do your own stuff in between.and youll love it.(without the formality and oriental tradition, makes it less gay)[Edited on December 31, 2006 at 2:01 AM. Reason : ( o Y o )]

see when people say kick boxing i think muay thai. if that is the case i would say go for that because i'm not a big fan of TKD. maybe its just the slight rivalish feelings i have toward them since i'm a japanese oriented style. not to mention most of the TKD schools around here are weak and childs play. i won't even say my school was hardcore but my experiences haven't been too positive.

i studied tae kwon do while living in seoul. during my last session, i made my sparring partner cry. for some reason, i was traumatized by that and the subsequent events. i have no idea why. my mom tried to get me to pick it up again when we moved to the u.s., but i wasn't up for it. i wish i had.it really depends on what dojang you study at and your dedication, but tae kwon do can definitely get you into shape. most of the dojangs in the u.s., that i've observed, are mediocre at best. you're basically only required to attend a couple of classes per week, break some boards, and do stretching exercises. they're designed to impress parents and get more money out of them. that's pretty lame. in korea, you're required to do alot of physical and mental training exercises in addition to learning the techniques. also, you're taught philosophy, religion, morality, nationalism, etiquette, etc. most people believe that tae kwon do is solely a striking form, but that's not true. you may get some grappling, pressure point, and throwing instruction.i got some "backyard training" in muay thai (different from just kickboxing) during high school from a friend's father. chris' parents were thai immigrants, and his dad praticed muay thai when he was younger. mr. c (i can't spell his last name ) would gather a group of us together and we'd watch his home videos of muay thai matches. afterwards, he'd take us out back and give us some instruction. i know this isn't the same as taking classes, but we definitely learn alot and got plenty of exercise. if you're only wanting to invest the minimum with a couple of 2 hour classes a week, i think kickboxing is better in terms of getting exercise. the training is more up-tempo, aerobic, and intensive. you'll be hitting bags alot, and kickboxing techniques will get your abs and thighs looking nice. with tae kwon do, you'll be in formations alot and repeating technique. with both forms, you should get to spar a ton, and that's where you'll get the bulk of your exercise (outside of explicit physical training).i think that a grappling form is the best in terms of exercising to lose weight, and specifically building stamina. for that, i'd look at jiu jitsu, judo, and hap ki do (which is basically tae kwon do with alot of infighting).[Edited on January 1, 2007 at 12:27 AM. how bout....go to the gym?....lol or run? its a little cheaper than the 99 a month and you can go more than 3 times a week!!!

If you actually enjoy the karate or kickboxing or whatever, you're way more likely to go than just going to the gym and working out with weights or a bike or whatever. If you just want to do something to be active, try a few different places and see what you like. Kickboxing will probably be better for you as far as a workout, and as a self-defense thing, but some places are really hardcore about it, and others are less. But again, if you don't enjoy it, you're not going to go anyway, so it's a "do-what-you-feel" situation to me.
