ok, so my cat is rattling really bad. i've read up on it, and that means that the ceramic is breaking up inside of it. i need a new one. meineke is wanting to charge 325 for it installed. however i found a magnaflow hi-flow cat on ebay. 55.57 w/ free shipping. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Carsound-MagnaFlow-Catalytic-Converter-2-5-HF-FS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33629QQitemZ8022265135QQrdZ1the only question i have is that my 02 sensor is built into my cat right now. can i get that one ^ and weld in a bung or something? i'm not wanting to pay over 300 if i can get one for 50 and weld it up myself. thanks guys

What's the vehicle?
12/19/2005 2:11:54 PM
my bad. 97 jeep wrangler 2.5 4 cyl. ax-5. any more info needed?
12/19/2005 2:16:05 PM
i've read on jeepsunlimited and jeepforum ab people using them, but didn't know if they just welded in a bung or what. i know two styles were available, one w/ the 02 in the cat and one w/o it in the cat. i just don't know if i can use the style w/o the 02 in the cat. (mine has the 02 sensor directly in the cat fyi)
12/19/2005 2:17:45 PM
remove cat, gut cat, reinstall cat
12/19/2005 2:23:25 PM
will it pass emissions like that?[Edited on December 19, 2005 at 2:24 PM. Reason : ^also it's welded in, so might as well replace it if i can get that one off ebay for around 50 bux]
12/19/2005 2:24:28 PM
^^beat me to it, tuite! haha.. no pun intended. I'd say gut it, then cross the emissions bridge when you come to it. No sense in spending the time/effort in it now. It may or may not pass emissions when you have to get it inspected. If it does, great! if it doesn't, then replace it then. In 2007, you won't have to pass emissions!
12/19/2005 2:28:03 PM
well i just passed inspection like 2 weeks ago, so i'm good for a year, but what i'm saying is that if it was just a bolt in i'd gut it and run it, but being welded i might as well replace it w/ a good one. it'll be the same amount of work and 50 bux isn't bad.ok, back to the original question. will that ebay cat work with my jeep. will i need to weld a bung in and will the 02 sensor still function correctly?
12/19/2005 2:33:32 PM
Which 02 sensor is part of the cat, the upstream (pre-cat) or downstream (post-cat) or both?
12/19/2005 2:44:45 PM
it's the 2nd 02 sensor, so downstream[Edited on December 19, 2005 at 2:54 PM. Reason : .]
12/19/2005 2:48:24 PM
you should only have one cat, did you mean it's the second sensor?
12/19/2005 2:51:18 PM
i meant second sensor, sorry
12/19/2005 2:54:09 PM
I'd go ahead and try it if you don't want to try an OEM cat. But don't be surprised if the CEL comes on and it's a downstream O2 sensor code. make sure your welds are good and there are no leaks, not even pin holes. If you have leaks before the cat, it can suck air and burn up the cat and/or the sensor(s). If you take your time and can work a MIG, I don't see why it wouldn't work.
12/19/2005 3:03:19 PM
Why don't you just give Bob or Henry a call? Bet money they've dealt with this SNAFU before and know a good solution. For one, I'd want to know if the rear O2 sensor is located in the rear of the cat or in the middle. It may very well make a difference, as the oxidation catalyst (the platinum-coated part of the ceramic monolith) is located before the reduction catalyst (the rhodium-coated part; deals with NOx). If it's in the rear, why not just weld a bung into the pipe immediately behind the cat?Beats me why they would even do it any other way, unless it's for cross-compatibility in different markets. Either that or to use up a supply of pipe (which makes damn little sense to retool for a whole different converter).
12/19/2005 3:09:09 PM
^ thanks for that reply. i was hoping you'd jump in. the sensor is in the back 1/3 of the cat. bob and henry? i don't know them, and I'm currently in charlotte. so if it's in raleigh it probably won't work. i want to fix this before the trip back to state. guess i might just do an oem replacement, but not for 325 bux
12/19/2005 3:13:44 PM
Shit, weld you a bung on the pipe just behind the cat. I seriously don't think it'll hurt a damn thing. BTW, you might want to call around locally, or check Advance Auto for a universal three-way cat. I used to buy them all the time and weld 'em in when I did exhaust work.
12/19/2005 3:24:30 PM
I thought that it was implied from the beginning that you were going to weld it in the pipe after the cat, but i guess you were talking about welding it into the cat? yeah, my recomendation to give it a try was just in the pipe, not the cat.
12/19/2005 3:32:25 PM
^ sorry about the confusion. i was asking if it would mess up anything if i just welded in a bung for the sensor after the cat. after lookin in that ebay guy's store more I think he has a cat that will work for my jeep. i will just have to see.
12/19/2005 3:40:16 PM
wait until you get back to Raleigh and call Henry's Muffler. They'd probably weld that magnaflow in there for like $25
12/19/2005 3:47:27 PM
just gut it and weld it back. jeeps typically won't throw a code, even obdII ones. my ram has passed emissions for ~50k miles with a gutted shell. i'll do it if you bring it back to raleigh.
12/19/2005 5:37:50 PM
how do u gut it? just knock out all the stuff inside and run it?
12/19/2005 8:49:48 PM
You got it.We always said "run a broom handle through it"...
12/19/2005 8:56:01 PM
it'll probably stink though, smell like an old car. chris's toyota smells like that b/c of a missing cat
12/19/2005 8:59:13 PM
ok, so i got a part number now. 23227 magnaflow is a direct fit. i kinda want to just replace it, not gut it. it's a dd so the smell ^ and i've heard it'll smell like rotten eggs. just kinda seems sensible to get a new one and be done w/ it. thanks for everybody's help tho. i'll let ya know what all i get if anyone cares
12/19/2005 9:05:13 PM
mine never smelled real bad but its definately best to just do it right so it'll pass, they're being douches about passing you without one or a bad one or one throwing a light or anything now
12/19/2005 9:16:45 PM
I just had a cat installed at Henry's on a 98 cherokee. Cost about $120.I would call them and see what they quote.919-872-8545
12/19/2005 9:25:59 PM
my yota doesn't smell at all, and i'm just running a glass pack behind an empty shell. my cat-gutting weapon of choice is a piece of pipe and a 5 lb sledge [Edited on December 19, 2005 at 10:04 PM. Reason : -]
12/19/2005 10:03:53 PM
rotten egg smell is a cat going bad. generally on older cats (like pre 90's). smell won't be bad. honestly, cats don't do a whole hell of alot on modern vehicles. technology has come far enough that most obdII motors will easily pass state and federal emissions standards.
12/19/2005 10:29:17 PM
easy fix step 1 unbolt sectionstep 2 take long prybar or long rod and jab the unit untill emptystep 3 replace section. will not set a check engine light in a jeep. all this high flow cat shit is gay. do it the cheap way and gut it. that way you save money gain power and still pass a ncsi
12/20/2005 1:56:24 PM
^Damn, that is a good idea. I wonder why no one else in this thread thought of it?
12/20/2005 3:18:06 PM
^^It's not a bolt on/off cat, he's going to have to cut and weld. anyone else hear an echo... echo... echo....
12/20/2005 3:53:21 PM
no he doesnt unbolt from header and then from the other end and take the trans mount down will come strait down.
12/20/2005 3:58:06 PM
There's a sharp transition (turn) after that flange isn't there? I could be wrong, but I thought there was. Even if there isn't and it's a straight shot, he's still having to deal with the whole exhaust assembly, pipe, cat, pipe, muffler, pipe and all the associated hangars... what a PITA!! Plus, i'm assuming he doesn't want to risk damaging the integrated 02 sensor by using something as unweildy as a long prybar through a long pipe.you're saying that would be easier that two quick cuts with a sawzall and then a couple of zips with a MIG?? 30 minute project, TOPS, and that includes the gutting.[Edited on December 20, 2005 at 4:09 PM. Reason : -]
12/20/2005 4:08:04 PM
ok, so slowblack96 wants me to drop the whole exhaust. that would include droppin the skid, and having it wiggle it around my rear axle. how about no. i ordered a magnaflow cat. around 90 bux. just gonna weld it in when i get back to raleigh, unless i find someone who will do it for cheap here. i just didn't want to gut it, i'm a puss [Edited on December 20, 2005 at 4:16 PM. Reason : ^ and i wouldn't want to damage that 02 sensor, those things are $texas$]
12/20/2005 4:15:46 PM
^yes you are^^^and you have got to seriously be one of the biggest idiots on here... i'm sure you'll reply with some whining comment about how i always talk shit to you, but posts like this are why. quit posting such dumbass shit when you don't know what the hell you're talking about.
12/20/2005 4:35:24 PM
yes, i'm not the official idiot anymore
12/23/2005 6:08:22 PM
you at least have some intelligent/accurate posts mixed in there. he has none, and can hardly type english to boot.

http://www.jeepsunlimited.com seriously?
12/24/2005 10:09:35 PM
seriously. u want me to check pirate and get flamed bc it's a newb question? i feel that jeepsunlimited is a decent source of non-hardcore mods to jeeps. feel free to tell me why that is not a good source on something like a simple exhaust modification.
12/24/2005 10:29:40 PM
but doesnt it make me look cool and experienced to make fun of jeepsunlimited? i mean, everyone else does. perhaps, i am a sheep.
12/24/2005 10:44:20 PM
haha, yea, ju gets ragged on a lot. it's not really a good source of hardcore, cutting edge stuff, but for something like exhaust or blings mods, I think it's decent. whatever works
12/24/2005 10:49:16 PM
Do these 31's make my ass look fat?
12/25/2005 10:53:44 PM
