after I graduate my my history degree. I was wondering if getting an MBA would help at all. I guess it would help me find a way to get the money to start up a small business. Any suggestions? Should I get an MBA? Where? What do you need to get in? Anything else useful? Thanks!

you dont need an mba to run a small business. experience >>>> mba

heres my train of thought:to run a successful small business, ill require enough money to get a good location/advertise/start-up costs/etc.to obtain that money, ill have to work somewhere else first.with a history BA, there arent many options opened outside of teaching.with an MBA, more opportunities will be avaliable, which will pay more money. ill have the money to start, but ill also have the money to bail out safely in case i fail.thus, in the long term, an MBA will help me obtain necessary funds as well as give me more education (and you can never have too much education )

Why did you come to school for a History degree when you say it's only good for teaching and you don't have any desire to do so?
12/11/2005 4:54:09 PM
um...how many people graduate w/ a degree in what they originally came to school for? i started out in engineering like everyone else and switched when i realized i didnt enjoy it. dumb question.and im 75% sure i want to teach, but 25% of me might want to try this at some point.

I started my own business....start up costs came from stocks and other investments...but i split it all 50/50 with my business partner. and Experience >>>> MBA

I'm gonna be brash: Why the hell did you get a history degree if you weren't 100% sure you were gonna teach for life? Seriously.

goddam it, you people are useless. OMG YOU CANT MAKE UP YOUR MIND ARE YOU RETARDED???
12/11/2005 5:22:42 PM
who cares what degree he has....most people don't even work in their majors field....so long as you have a piece of paper that says "i spent lots of money on my education" no one cares what you studied.and so long as you know a few people in the right places, you are set even with a basket weaving degree[Edited on December 11, 2005 at 5:27 PM. I graduated with a BS in History and had no problems finding a job. I just had to start low and work my way up.I'm not a teacher either. I hate kids of all ages.

I too want to do this PNB. The hard part is figuring out what I what I want to sell and/or what services I want to provide. The second hardest part is raising the capital to do so.

I only had 2 years going in (and that was as a biochemist) and I'm past 2x what I was at going in and I'm only 6 months out from school. In the past 30 months I've worked with ~12 companies and I'm headed to my second full-time gig since graduating. It's possible to get a lot of experience while you get the degree if you really work at it.For those of us who we're smart enough to figure out as an undergrad that even medicore computer people make mad bank, it's not a bad plan.Aside: as far as $ goes, science is for suckers - you've been warned.[Edited on December 12, 2005 at 4:31 PM. i agree in this case that an MBA isn't going to help out all the much, MBA is more about climbing the corp ladder than running your own small business.
