Here's the deal:

I've found two companies with good prices (way better than what I used to have). http://www.wolfpackrowing.com currently forwards to ncsu.edu/stud_orgs/rowing. I am buying some server space (hopefully won't have to get dedicated server). I need space for pictures and archives of pictures. Want e-mail addresses, php, phpMyAdmin support.

Currently I've found two deals (one has a non-profit org discount but is still more expensive than the other):

----
hostROCKET http://www.hostrocket.com/
http://www.hostrocket.com/products/todays_special.htm
today's special is ok.

Red Hat Linux apache server
50Gb Bandwidth
2Gb server space
Control Panel
Unlimited E-mail accounts (anything@sandyridgeponyclub.org)
10 Databases, php, cgi, perl, mysql, phpMyAdmin

Non profit org deal: No set-up fee (20 or 30 bucks saved), 20% discount (that's 136 dollars + tax) for TWO years service

BETTER DEAL:

1&1
http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/HostingBeginner;jsessionid=6AB0CF771A7F6C53C34AF8ABC659D2F5.TC60b?__frame=_top
<http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/HostingBeginner;jsessionid=6AB0CF771A7F6C53C34AF8ABC659D2F5.TC60b?__frame=_top&__lf=Static> &__lf=Static

Linux Apache
250Gb Bandwith (WOW GOOD DEAL!)
5Gb server space (WOW GOOD DEAL!)
500 e-mails (more than plenty)
10 Databases, cgi, etc (everything)

The best part: $2.99 per month

-----
So...how do I decide. I don't want crap service, i want a company I can trust. Price isn't really an issue at this point however cheaper is obviously better. I used to pay upwards of 15-20 bucks a month with some other company, had less bandwidth, and less space (500mb) <-----refers to the stoneage.

Thanks for your help,
wolfpackrowing

Remember this fact...

You get what you pay for. A GOOD solid isp for hosting typically costs around $10 per month and up depending on your bandwidth needs. Put the companies webaddress into Google and see what kind of reviews it comes up with.

the sailing club has been using progress, but I really can't recommend them at this point. Its been nice having someone local for support, but now it appears that its gone the way of the dinosaur.

use that link and get a years worth of hosting for ~$22. I moved to them from Progress and the server is actually faster at php and mysql requests and I have more space and bandwidth. Very happy with them thus far.

I have 1and1 and I love it man.... i got in for the 3 free years deal that they did a while back.

I plan on renewing and doing the 2.99 per month deal when I run out. Great support, 100% uptime (better than dreamhost has been) and I really like all the extras that they throw in.

They even gave great phone support to me even though I didnt receive free support in my free package.

Go with them, All the way.

I just looked and found that I can get a few bucks on my account too... so if you would be so kind,
http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=6863720 is my referrer link.

Do you have any suggestions? Progress won't respond to any of my support tickets. I don't mind spending $10/month if I know I won't have to switch hosts every 1-2 years.

honestly, I have had 1and1 for 3 years now... And I have had 4 different hosting services all at the same time.

1and1 has been my best by far. I have also had dreamhost (2nd best), sitelutions (3rd best), and Progress (not impressed at all, but was up until recently)

Dream host is more expensive, but seems like in the end they will be the better of the group, but just not the best deal. 1and1 is the best deal I have experienced

^^^ that dreamhost deal is basically, 1 year for cheap, every year after that is 120 at least for a year... not too bad, like I said, but 1and1 is cheaper and has been just as reliable...

USE promo code ROBSTER05

Here is my dreamhost referral link too http://www.dreamhost.com/rewards.cgi?rttaylor

That will get ya 22.80 for one year, or 93.80 for 2 years.... after that, its about 120 per year.

I can vouch for Dreamhost. 1and1 sounds good too. I didn't get in on the coupon deal with DreamHost so I got stuck with the $7.99 a month (since I prepaid for a year).

Something that is really neat is that they give you unlimited domains, subdomains, emails, and mySQL databases. While it isn't likely that you'll use more than 10 DBs or domains, I often like having something like test.mydomain.com just to test some stuff out before i implement it on the regular site.

One thing that does disturb me is the time it takes for them to get back to you if you have a request. It used to be just a few hours, but recently a coupon made its way to Slickdeals and they got hundreds (maybe thousands) of people who aren't experienced with uploading/downloading/setting up websites, and have flooded the support queue, and lately it's taken about 2-3 days for a response

But other than that, I have no problems with them. They also increase your quota and bandwidth by 40MB and 1GB per week. Shell access (I think you get up to 75 accounts if you want) make it easy to move files around, and gunzip/untar all those huge web programs that would take forever to upload individually through SFTP/FTP. They also provide SSL for email servers.

i use http://www.lonex.com which is pretty cheap - i think comparable to http://www.godaddy.com

i'd really recommend http://www.mediatemple.com though, they are quality.

ive been doing research on hosting and student./non-profit hosting discounts...

hostgator's hatchling plan (http://www.hostgator.com) seems like the most economical, and they get killer reviews. enter coupon code "jury" and you get 25 bucks off. so with a domain and 1 year of hosting its roughly 75 bucks.

[Edited on December 11, 2005 at 3:45 PM. Reason : and since you have a domain it will be closer to 60]

is dreamhost and/or hostgator reliable?

i am getting so sick of having to move my shit once a year or two

it's a pain in the ass, i have a rather large database that has to be moved, and inevitably the database name prefixes change and then all my shit has to be edited to work right again

if wolfmarsh would just answer a ticket or a pm or an email or a phone call or a FUCKING SMOKE SIGNAL we wouldn't be having to do this shit again

From what I've observed, dreamhost has been very reliable. Sometimes they'll announce certain things such as scheduled downtimes, but last for very short times (<10 minutes).

When you move your databse, just export everything to a .sql file, and with dreamhost you can use phpmyadmin to upload the .sql file, or login to your shell and 'mysql < mydata.sql' to the database. you shouldn't have to worry about prefixes or anything

^^ I'm in the exact same boat.

I'm almost to the point where I'd be willing to pay considerably more per month for a little more reliability.

I've had very few problems with uptime or stability out of Progress, but it's not a good feeling knowing that tech support is so sluggish should something happen.

Media Temple sounded good in this review, but then I realized you have to spend $4.95 extra/month for spam filtering!
http://www.webhostinghandbook.com/db/mediatemple/review/
I'm getting tired of the "Doctor" emailing me to my Progress account which also does not have spam filtering.

I must say after a couple weeks with Hostgator, I'm pretty satisfied. I have filed about 4 support tickets with them and often got responses back within 5 minutes! My email and cPanel are so much faster now than Progress. Also hostgator has some automated installs. I was able to get gallery2 up and running very quickly. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Dreamhost just quadrupled everyone's disk space and is providing 8x the bandwidth. I don't know what you get when you sign up, but it's probably close to 20GB storage and 1TB of bandwidth/month

Plus they increased the disk/bandwidth rate, adding 160MB of storage and 8GB of bandwidth per week to your quotas.

Wish I had known about 1&1 before this.

We ordered the one year economy hosting package from GoDaddy.com who also secured us our domain name http://mbasa.org. GoDaddy lacks toll-free telephone support and FTP takes some time to connect. This is annoying when you're adjusting some code in small increments and have to upload to the server repeatedly from Dreamweaver.

I've also found their performance sluggish often, especially when accessing MySQL. The hosting costs are $3.56 a month for 12 months.

I'm shocked to read those posts... They sent me an email announcing that my site would be down for planned maintenance. I noticed it was down at the time they announced, and then was up 15 minutes later.

I do think they are trying to offer too much at too low of a cost. The complaints in the posts ^above were that the servers were overcrowded. Oh well, if they start to suck, I'll change.

Dreamhost promo code: SAVINGS will save you the max amount possible on all plans ($97 on yearly plans) just in case you missed out on the 777 deal. You'll get a year of service for around $22. Not bad for 20GB storage & 1TB/mon transfer.
