So I've never encountered this before and I'm a bit dumbfounded what's causing this.

Guy brings in a computer that he says has always done this. Put in http://www.google.com and it asks you for a username and password for http://www.google.com

I think it's something with the user setting because there used to be password protection for internet access since bandwidth was so limited (back in 1997). Well i checked and that's not it.

So i go and make sure all the IE settings are default and they are.

I look at his Device manager and make sure the network card isn't having trouble and I even upgraded the device drivers for it.

Here's the thing that confuses me. It will explore the network, transfer files, but whenever you try to go to a website it has this issue. Any help would greatly be appreciated as I know there is a simple fix.

Have you tried using a different browser to see if it does the same thing?

by default doesn't IE just look for a connection, make sure a proxy isn't enabled and looking for a username and password

I found what it was. I should have mentioned it's a 2000 machine. In the advanced tab under http 1.1 item, using http 1.1 with proxy was not checked. it is now and all works.

Sigh i knew it was something stupid.

EDIT: In some copies of windows 2000, the check box is REVERSED. Meaning that when it's checked it's unchecked and when it's unchecked it's checked. I had remembered something about this and tried it to see. This is with IE 5.

okaaaay it worked and when i restarted the machine it's doing the same thing again. hehe forget this I'm just gonna format the bitch and be done with it. There's some crazy setting in there that's doing this.

lol. You can't uninstall IE, it's intergrated into Windows. If you managed to do such a thing, you would break your Windows installation.

This is just one of the many reasons I want all our machines to upgrade to XP. It's so much easier to maintain and fix crap. To beat it all... all of their machines that are not new... ALL of them aren't 2000 full... they are the upgrade version from 98.

On top of that when i have to format, I have to install 2/4 windows patches before i can even do the windows updates anymore. I'm so glad 2k isn't going to be supported after next year. It was great compared to 98se... but XP owns it as far as IT is concerned.
