I know the two most popular responses to what I'm going to ask already:1. Because we can, why are you such a hater of rich people?2. Daddy got it for me.The question: How do some of these college "children" own vehicles that NCSU grads can't even afford with a well paying job? Qualifier: I own a decent car. I have a coop and have worked very hard to get where I am. I know some people also work hard at work and come by some money that way or are smart enough for a scholarship. But let's be real folks, a full ride won't pay for a $35000 car. Neither will a coop or summer job.Soapbox: I don't care as long as they're clean, well taken care of cars. But the brake dust and mud on the BMW's just get my goat man. Plus the little "children" girls that have the IQ of a rock but somehow made it in and sip latte on the way to class in a 350Z. I'm not necessarily [just] jealous, I also wouldn't want to be that car! What a travesty! An automatic sportscar at the hands of a spoiled child! Ugh....Somebody that CAN sympathize with me let me know what you think. I'd also like to hear from the latte swilling girls too.

aarons an idiot. A coop is job in which you rotate semesters of work and study. You put an "-" between the co-op if you want to be technical.
12/7/2005 12:24:24 PM
OOOOOOOOHokYou were talking about cars, so I was thinking "coupe."But this thread still makes no sense.
12/7/2005 12:26:55 PM
is this because you feel guilty that you have a 1.8t? or because you are mad that you don't have one?im asking because a 1.8t isnt really that nice or unattainable
12/7/2005 12:30:42 PM
oh well, I should have kept it simple. I just wanted to see HOW people own these cars, WHY the parents would give a student the car, and WHY can't they take care of it if they can obviously afford to have it.I forgot though, duuhhhhhhh:the answer to WHY 1 ? Because daddy can't say not to a squeeling brat that wants the world. Heck, why not if it will shut them up.the answer to HOW? Either rich or in debt up to their eyeballsthe answer to WHY 2 ? too lazy to wash it, too in debt to BUY a car wash, too spoiled to do either on their own
12/7/2005 12:30:53 PM
so...you started a thread asking questions you already knew the answers to?im confused
12/7/2005 12:32:12 PM
the 1.8T has about 100,000 miles and got a loan for it used. I put my income from my co-op into a savings fund to direct pay the car loan. The rest will go towards my summer tuition for 2006. I'll be doing the work rotation this spring of 2006.
12/7/2005 12:32:49 PM
you sirare a haterand a suck posterYOU SIR ARE NOT WORTHY OF THIS BOX OF SOAPI SAY GOOD-DAY
12/7/2005 12:33:27 PM
whats wrong with parents buying cars for their childrenand i do know people paying for nice cars with their co-opand what do you care if their car is dirty, who says they have to clean their car. maybe they aren't as caught up on material possesions and looking like they have money as you are
12/7/2005 12:33:33 PM
by the way: It is called a "soapbox" , implying that I am going on an empty rant to satisfy some uncontrollable urge to get the giant chip off my shoulder
12/7/2005 12:34:23 PM
i would just like to point out that he is talking trash about people fronting like they have moneywhile his sn is vw18tand he is financing a high mileage used one[Edited on December 7, 2005 at 12:35 PM. Reason : .]

all financing means is that you don't have the upfront cash. it doesn't mean that you can't easily afford the payments. Plus, why not get a loan if the interest you gain on what you save is higher than what you pay on the loan? If you're smart enough to swallow that anyway, which anyone who seriously goes into a loan can. CD's (certificates of deposit) and money markets don't discriminate against how much or little you have, therefore take advantage of their offerings.
12/7/2005 12:40:35 PM
but you see the gross hypocrrisy right?
12/7/2005 12:41:27 PM
thanks xvang, sports cars are made to be manuals (or paddle shifters of course). An automatic vs. a manual or paddle shifter will ALWAYS lose out assuming they are the same vehicle and assuming you don't miss gears or stall out.
12/7/2005 12:42:29 PM
not if you are drag racing
12/7/2005 12:43:31 PM
really, no joke, what is the hipocrisy?- a 1.8T is not a nice car, or a nasty car, it is an affordable used option to a similar mileaged Civic, Sentra, or the like. I'm not talking about the 180-200hp GTI's and GLI's here. All it is is a slow little manual with 4 doors and reasonable mileage. Reasonable because I put about 30000 miles on a car per year. Just because I love my car doesn't mean its a pos ricer with neon, a wing, and a coffee can exhaust. You don't have to own an expensive car to love it.
12/7/2005 12:46:18 PM
Jon, I meant the manual style will always win. Just try to drop an automatic at 4K rpm and launch it. The brakes will lose hold before the automatic gets even close to 4K rpm. I seriously HOPE you meant that the manual has the advantage.
12/7/2005 12:48:06 PM
a 1.8 isnt as realiable as a honda. you bought it cause it looks like you have moneyand an auto has the advantage in drag racing
12/7/2005 12:49:38 PM
Alas,,,,,,I must leave my PC for a while, I truly did enjoy everybody's participation. I'll be back around 3pm if anyone wants to talk any further. Everyone have a good day!
12/7/2005 12:49:40 PM
go make some money to pay that car loan
12/7/2005 12:51:01 PM
12/7/2005 12:58:15 PM
for me, the question is WHY the hell you would want an expensive car.My car cost me $13,000 with alot of great features. I guess if you're single and trying to attract someone shallow with an expensive car, I can get it, or if you need something like a truck for functionality, but otherwise, it feels like a waste to meof course, I spent $500 on a treo pda, so I can't say much
12/7/2005 1:12:38 PM
have you ever driven a really nice car? as soon as you do you will understand
12/7/2005 1:19:38 PM
Ever go through life wishing you had those things? I sure have. Now imagine that you worked hard and now make extremely good money and you can give you kids nice things. I'm not talking BMW's like some parents... but that's who they are. It's how they feel that their kids are put above the rest or given everything they never had. I'm not saying it makes good kids, it typically makes superficial parasites. I was lucky. My parents provided me with car(s). They weren't great... but I had a honda accord (totaled, not my fault), a tank (volvo), and a geo storm. Yeah they aren't great cars but I never had to pay for them. Their parents never bought them a car they had to buy it themselves and they felt that I shouldn't have to buy a car. The same thing applies at a greater difference. Many rich parents today weren't rich young and can give more. It's also one hell of a status symbol so regardless of parental history, if you have a BMW convertable... that's instant friends. You become popular etc. I wasn't raised like this and I don't really want a NICE free car. It kind of defeats the feeling of success when you can afford it yourself. HOWEVER... there are many people at ncsu that have nice cars that can afford it on their own. How? They got full rides to school and work good jobs at the same time so they can afford it. Parents might toss in free gas and insurance but don't hate on people for their nice cars because you might not know. If I worked fulltime at my current job and was going to school full time on a full ride scholarship etc... I could afford a car payment of $1000 a month no problem and still have plenty of cash left over. There are also people who work only in the summer. Friends of mine went to pick tomatos for 3 months in california and lived in SHIT conditions during it. They walked away with $30,000 EACH for working 12 hour days, 6 days a week for 3 months. Also, there are companies that give scholarships specifically for cars!
12/7/2005 1:39:55 PM
I'm in college and daddy bought me an awesome benzyes there's brake dust all over the wheelsyes the car is a little dirtythe inside has dirt/crushed leaves/ drink straws from fast food restaurantsi lost the card of the guy that would drive up and power wash it for me when I was at the gymthe reason the cars are dirty is because rich people have better things to do with their time than wash carsfor 20 bucks i'll let you clean my car, you can listen to me start the engine too, poorboy

im going to go with WHO THE FUCK CARES on this one. it really doesnt affect you or anyone else besides the family, so why is this soap box worthy.i got new cars and whatnot and im tired of reading how everyone who gets a decent car is a spoiled brat. jesus fucking christ, harp on the fact that anyone different than (or better off than) you is automatically bad a little more plz.those richers rip off the workers and exploit everyone in their high powered jobs, spoil their brat kids, and are too full of themselves to have any respect for anyone else. those kids have dirty cars so they must not appreciate a damn thing and are only doing it as a status symbol so they can make friends their otherwise worthless personality couldnt make them.do you understand how stupid you sound?
12/7/2005 3:30:01 PM
I almost agree with part of the spirit of this thread.Yeah, there are people who worked their asses off and now they can give their kids nice things. I'm all about that, as long as you couple it with a decent upbringing. You don't need kids who grew up rich feeling entitled to shit. You don't, I don't, society doesn't. You've got to make sure your kid knows that you worked your ass off so he doesn't take it for granted. I haven't seen this pulled off very often. Then there are those people who grew up rich, are rich now, and give their kids expensive-ass things because they're pushovers, or because it increases their own status, or they're overrewarding the kid for some minor accomplishment, or what have you. Fuck those people, and, in general, fuck their kids.If you're rich, but you're not first-generation rich, the odds are good that I bitterly hate you and await the opportunity to shoot you during the revolution.----PS, I bought my Corolla with a modest inheritance from people that definitely instilled in me an appreciation for hard work and the value of money. I probably didn't deserve it, but at the very least I recognize as much.
12/7/2005 3:40:50 PM
so if parents always had money and want to get their kids a nice car just because then thats bad?
12/7/2005 3:47:02 PM
whats your classification of rich. some ppl just like to spend above their means to spoil their brat kids.[Edited on December 7, 2005 at 3:50 PM. Reason : john has a good point as well.i really dont see the point in hating. id take a beamer free]
12/7/2005 3:48:17 PM
on christmas i hope you get really mad at your parents for turning you into a spoiled brat
12/7/2005 3:52:30 PM
12/7/2005 3:56:13 PM
what is sufficiently good behavior if you already have a well-behaved kid? i mean, if they already dont do drugs, have alright grades, got into a decent college, have a part time job, etc. i dont see what they could do in your eyes since certain things are expected and "minor."in the same vein dont you think plenty of ppl dont realize how spoiled their kids are (if indeed they are) and think they arent doing any harm? in your book if they really dont know then it is straight, but the above isnt?[Edited on December 7, 2005 at 3:59 PM. hey grumpy what did you have to do for your birthday presentsi hope they made you plow the fieldsyou lazy drain on society
12/7/2005 4:05:26 PM
newsflash: You don't have to be a spoiled rich kid to feel entitled to shit. Poor people feel entitled to shit all the time... that is why they steal. If you make $350,000 a year, have established investments, all the cars you want, the house yuo want, etc. and still have plenty of cash for buyiong your kids a bimmer, then more power to you. I know people that commute 3 hours a day. Their car is very important to them because of the time they spend in it and a certain comfort level they want with it, no different than with a house. I frequently see $40,000 trucks or cars parked at mobile homes and ghetto houses. Its all in where you place value. To each his own.
