Ok, so I have worked at this place before. I know the managers and have built up my reputation with them as a hard, honest worker. I gave a two weeks notice before I quit before and the manager told me if I was ever in a position to need a job, then I could always come back. However, in this lapse of time that I have not been employed at this place, they have switched store managers. However, all of the other managers have remained the same (dept managers, co managers). I reapplied to this place on September 30 of this year for an office position. I was told that I would pretty much be hired immediately. I made sure that on October 1, my credit was great and such so that when they ran the checks all would show up good. Everything was great. I talked with my old dept manager, who is still the dept manager, and she said that she couldn't wait to have me back, as did the co manager. I waited and waited and called repeatedly up to the store to find out the status on my employment. The manager kept BSing me saying "oh, I haven't ran your checks yet," or "I didn't know you were still interested in the position." I found out he hired another person for the job. However this lady didn't work out. Then, he tried to promote a different person from the store to this position. That didn't work out either. Finally, I find out that he tried to hire a girl who previously tested positive for marijuana in her drug screen for the job that I applied for months ago. The corporate office wouldn't allow it. FINALLY, today, December 1, he decides to offer me a job in the department, but not the job I wanted. He says that he will "think about moving me up in a couple of weeks." I don't understand why all of these other people who were less qualified than me and who applied AFTER I did get priority to the position over me and when I finally get a chance to get employed, he wont even promise the position to me. Was I wrong for turning the job down today?

Either that place is poorly managed, your previous "contacts" don't have as much power as you thought they did, or you have an inflated view of those "managers" opinions of you. Either way, you don't want to work for people that will just jerk you around like that. Fuck em!

Short term it may not be the smartest decision if you are looking for some $$$.Long term it was the right decision.My first job this exact same thing happened. First I wasn't "old enough" to be promoted ... and it took them the entire summer to tell me this. Next, when I was old enough, I saw two people I trained get promoted because they were available "year-round" and they "didn't hire seasonal managers". Final straw was when I worked 12 hours straight without a break and then when there was a good opportunity to get one, I wasn't allowed it. I quit the next day.Again, long term its the right decision. You don't want to be in a position (even if you were promoted) where they have ample opportunities to abuse you.
