whenever I turn on the heat or defrost on my truck, the temperature goes up, and gets hot usually within about 10 minutes, hot enough so I have to turn it down. It also goes up at an idle. It was losing coolant, and I added some stop leak which helped, but it still overheats. The truck is an 89 toyota with a 22re 4cyl. and 5-spd. could this be a bad thermostat? Thanks for any help you can give me.

You could try to bleed the system, but I'm having a hard time following your description of the problem.

So does it not overheat at all unless you run the heat or defrost?

have you checked your coolant level? dumb question, but worth asking, or found the leak?

Doesn't running the heat usually make the car run cooler though?

^If everything is functioning as it should, yes.
