12/4/2005 11:39:14 PM
uh ohhh. somebody forgot to tighten a hose clamp. bad mechanic, bad mechanic. hahahahazxappeal
12/5/2005 4:47:51 PM
Man, I am meticulous. Or at least try to be!No, basically this one is a process of elimination. I couldn't find a leak the other night, even after bringing the car up to temp and eyeballing everything closely. Bad thing is, when the car's hot, if the leak is small, it flashes to steam almost immediately, and I figured it might be leaking, but couldn't tell. No tank cracks...and I don't have a pressure tester. Not yet, anyway.First thing for me to do...replace the t-stat to make sure it's not intermittently sticking and boiling the system over. Car is a '93 Camry...and the t-stat was the original. This car is a New Hampshire car, and surface corrosion is apparent in several places. You should see the radiator! The fins between the flues have corroded away at the bottom! So it's VERY likely she has a pinhole leak. This car may be a prime candidate for Bar's Leaks until the radiator gets replaced. I know it isn't a big leak. And I can NOT find any evidence of the water pump leaking.Brian...I didn't even loosen a hose clamp! They're pinch clamps, anyway... I thought I heard somewhere that you can use a black light to look for coolant leaks
12/5/2005 8:43:49 PM
Not suprising. I happen to have a small one around here.Antifreeze does look like it would fluoresce very nicely under black light.
12/5/2005 8:50:57 PM
isnt there some type of dye used also with the light?
12/5/2005 9:01:51 PM
the only thing i dont appreciate about dan is his fucking load ass pencil sharpener grinding away before every class.
12/5/2005 9:43:05 PM
Yep. I had some...there are several types you can get. One that's soluble in oil (for engine/tranny), one that's soluble in PAG or ester oil (for AC), and I suppose there's one for cooling systems, though I've never bought it.Judging from the color properties of antifreeze, you'd think it would naturally fluoresce pretty well.
12/5/2005 9:43:28 PM
How is the person determining they have a leak? Watching the overflow tank is not a very good way about it.
12/5/2005 9:57:36 PM
film on the inside of the windshield?
12/5/2005 10:06:27 PM
^^a puddle under my cari think dan's right - this car has endured 13 NH winters with salted roads...everything's gone to hell
12/5/2005 11:16:18 PM
^ ok, just checking. Love the junkyard.
12/5/2005 11:20:48 PM
Actually, for 13 New Hampsha winters, this car has come out suprisingly well. The radiator is the only really bad sign of corrosion I have seen. The rest is mostly cosmetic.Doncha love chalky oxidized aluminum?
12/6/2005 12:11:20 AM
freeze plug?
12/6/2005 10:43:07 AM
Nope. Seriously, Ben, you oughta see the radiator. It's amazing it hasn't just let go altogether.
12/6/2005 11:04:36 AM
oh, i got the impression you couldnt find the leak, so i was thinking about the places that leak and are hard to see. If its antifreeze, it shouldnt be hot enough to just vaporize.
12/6/2005 11:16:48 AM
Pinhole leaks often do not stay wet when at operating temp (yes, the antifreeze will evaporate and dry), and therefore they can be hard to find if they are in a tight place. I got intermittent wisps of steam from around the corroded areas of the radiator. Just slightly.
12/6/2005 11:21:50 AM
The check engine light is now off. I believe that the problem has been solved. Thank you.Great guy people.
12/8/2005 4:09:28 PM
12/8/2005 6:08:52 PM
just gonna junk it b/c the radiator blew? how much ya want for it?
12/8/2005 6:43:17 PM
guess you should have had a new radiator installed when the old one was identified as rotten.
12/8/2005 6:53:58 PM
^really now^^parents have the final word on what we do with it, but we were thinking $1,000-1,500
12/8/2005 6:56:25 PM
Yep, should have said "get a new radiator" pronto...Thing is, there really wasn't an easily identified leak when I looked at it. Just the fins eaten away. Flues looked okay. Guess I should have brought a stronger light!
12/8/2005 6:56:30 PM
thinking $1,000-1,500 for a busted 92-96 camry is about twice what its worth, esp one from up north. youre better off fixing it and then selling it for $2500
12/8/2005 7:14:15 PM
hence...junking it
12/8/2005 7:19:46 PM
well if you (er, your parents) choose to sell the whole car for dirt cheap then shoot me a PM
12/8/2005 8:19:58 PM
I second that...Teggy's getting a lil long in the tooth, and I need something a bit cleaner and newer fer goin' to work and courtin' and whatnot...And it's nothing for me to drop an engine in that car if it needs as much. Hell, I may be interested!
12/8/2005 8:49:54 PM
i'll pass first dibs off to zxappeal, just cause that seems like the right thing to dobut still calling seconds
12/8/2005 9:03:03 PM
ok you two - make offers
