Does anyone know anyone who is a paralegal?
I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do if I get out of the Air Force, and exploring this as an option.

He's not in need of legal services, he just wants to know what a paralegal does, and if it's a good job to take after he gets out of the airforce.

I work in an office that shares space with lawyers and the paralegals do all the work and get paid shitty while the lawyer sits around her office and double clicks the mouse or some shit.

Well, right now my job isn't offered to civillians, not because the nature of the job, but because they'd constantly be paying overtime, and it's cheaper to get military people to do it. And believe me, I know allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll about doing stuff and getting zero credit for it. I'm not looking for tons of recognition or money, I just want a respectable job that I can live with.

i'm currently working as a paralegal at a personal injury law firm. when i first started i was assiting paralegals in case management in pre-lit and enjoyed it very much. i had a lot of contacts with clients and i enjoyed my work. now i've been promoted and am working as a civil litigation paralegal and i'm half pleased and half not with my job. i talk to clients a lot less now and am mainly stuck in a desk all day reviewing medical records and preparing files for mediation or trial. i spend most of my time on the phone with other paralegals playing phone tag to try and schedule a mediation or deposition. but there are other kind of paralegals as well. i do some legal research for the attorneys but in any firm setting an associate attorny (one just out of law school) is going to do the mass of legal research.

a corporate paralegal would be working alongside an in house attorney or attorney that works for a corporation. business deals, contracts, etc...there may be some legal research with that but most would be drafting documents for attorney review.

real estate paralegal would do title searches and filing deeds with the court. (real estate paralegals are also common free lance--so you could work from home)

i'm also taking night classes at meredith college to get my paralegal certificate which would up my salaray a bit. but as mentioned--paralegals do a lot of the grunt work in a lawfirm, and the attorneys make the money. but if you work for a good lawyer then the experience is gonna be rewarding. plus if you're a good paralegal you can really negotiate your salary. good paralegals are worth their weight in gold to attorneys and they'll compete for you.
