I dont think so.

if you had one at 8am, one at 1pm, and one at 6 pm, then that would break the rule.

I believe for it to be in the "rule" you have to have 3 consecutive exams like specter said, but yes it doesn’t hurt to ask your instructors, at least you've got three chances

Yeah, go ahead and ask. Some instructors are understanding, and will let you reschedule an exam for a later date. My PY 208 instructor last semester let me take the make-up exam at USTL, even though I was one exam period away from breaking the rule.

Doesn't count. For clairification, the rule:

THREE FINAL EXAMINATIONS IN 24 HOURS
No student shall be required to take three consecutively scheduled final examinations within any 24-hour period. If students find that they have three consecutively scheduled exams, they should report to the Department of Registration and Records (1000 Harris Hall) before the exams are to be given, have their schedules verified, and to obtain a form approving their request to change the date of a specific examination as designated by the student. They will take the form to the specified instructor or departmental office and arrange for a new examination date. The instructor will enter the new date on the form and sign it. The instructor and the student should both retain a copy. The student shall be responsible for returning the form to the Department of Registration and Records, 1000 Harris Hall.

I've gotten one moved with that schedule before. I told the teacher the deal and that i wasn't totally sure if it was in the rule or not, he let me take it another day, didn't seem to care much.

Contact one of your three profs before the week is over - today if possible.

Most profs have to plan how many exams to copy per section and how many graders to have on-hand. It causes exam or grader shortages when a lot of students ask to change without advance notice. Therefore, most profs strongly discourage requests for exam schedule switches, especially the night before the final. A prof is more open to requests if you contact them early and show that you've put some thought into how you're going to get everything done.

along those lines - present your situation to all three of your professors - one is likely to allow you to change

From: http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/academic_affairs/courses_undergrad/REG02.20.14.php
Quote :
" An exam schedule showing the date and hours of examination for each class meeting time is published each semester in the Schedule of Courses and is announced again in the Bulletin shortly after midsemester. Each examination period lasts three hours. Examinations will be held ONLY between the hours indicated. Exceptions must be approved by the dean of the college in which the course is taught.
"

As I interpret this looking at how the final exam schedule is laid out, the above prescription seems to suggest that the final examination for a given section (that is to say, for a student registered in such a section) must take place sometime within the three hour window provided by the R&R final exam schedule. Further, the language seems very clear that the authority to grant exceptions is not within the purview of individual faculty, but reserved to the appropriate Dean. The citation also suggests that this requirement is of a binding nature (an official university policy issued by the Provost) not simply an exhortation by R&R.

Directly following this is the language dealing with the "24 hour rule" (also cited above):
Quote :
"No student shall be required to take three consecutively scheduled final examinations within any 24-hour period.
"

Again, I read nothing here about individual faculty discretion in response to a verbal request (valid or otherwise) for sitting a final exam at a time other than that specified for the section in which the student is registered; on the other hand, it appears that when presented with the appropriate documentation, a given faculty member (presumably the student's choice) must then make the alternate exam arrangement (that is, I cannot say to the student: "go ask professor so-and-so.")

I hold fast to these regulations not for the sake of legal positivism, but because I find them necessary to ensure equal treatment for all of the 300-400 students I have in a given semester. If I begin moving exam dates for one or two students, how many more students were not given the same opportunity? If I accept one excuse to the rule, how then do I decide the next case; what criterion offers respite to one, but assigns perdition to another? Not being granted the perspicacity of Solomon, I believe it far more equitable to students to follow the intent of the law rather than the vagaries of my own faulty judgement (which is known to be evil )

PS The easiest way for me to think of the 24-hour rule is that it means one must have final exams scheduled in three consecutive slots as per Volex (those slots being morning; afternoon; evening: thus, there only three possibilities:
(1) morning; afternoon; evening (of same calander date)
(2) afternoon; evening; morning (of next calander date)
(3) evening; morning; afternoon (the last two of the next calandar date).

Can I reply to myself? Lest previous post seems unsympathetic, I recall my undergraduate finals almost invariably went something like (only one contiguous wk):

Monday: morning exam; afternoon exam; sleep
Tuesday: morning exam; afternoon exam; sleep
Wednesday: morning sleep; afternoon sleep; evening play pool, foosball for $ to pay for drinks at Dudley's Draw
Thursday: ditto Wednesday
Friday:
0900 wake up
0920 realize I had a final to take in the afternoon
0930 realize what class that final was in (10 min to find schedule wadded up in laundry to take home to mom)
0940 realize that one had to be cleared out of one's dorm room by 5:00 (the %$@#@s)
0950-1130 load up car (keeping stereo to the last)
1130 eat at Sbisa Hall hoping not to die of food poisoning
1200-1:00 remember again what final was upcoming and perhaps review (play Black Sabbath's 1st LP)
1:00-4:00 final final
5:00 clear out the dorm room, unplugging stereo at last minute; fire up Ted Nugent "Free for All" and hit the road.
