i think he's signed up for one in like january or februaryif he still has a motorcycle by thenand even then, the best case scenario that i see as being likely is that he doesn't wreck, but rides around like a scared little girl and never actually really learns how to ride a motorcycle...although it's more likely that he DOES wreck WHILE riding around like a scared little girl and never becoming a good rider.i told him to read Twist of the Wrist and buy some frame sliders.he's a total poser, though. he hasn't really played with the throttle at all, yet. i know this because he didn't realize it would wheelie just by applying full power or anything close to it.[Edited on November 22, 2005 at 4:09 PM. The first time I rode a bike, I had a real problem with the fact that when I twisted the gas, I was pushed back, which caused me to inadvertently twist the gas, which in turn pushed me back....I'd be dead if I were on a serious bike.

^^and accelerating the entire way through a corner, even if you think you're going in hot, starting as soon as you turn in (as opposed to from the apex)and not trying to brake while turningand not accelerating too hard and spinning the tire while in a cornerthose are the big ways that a powerful bike makes you more likely to eat ittarget fixation and not understanding countersteering, of course, are issues on any bike[Edited on November 22, 2005 at 4:12 PM. pfffffttt im getting an old 89 hawk tomorrow. something tells me im going to get tired of the accleration after owning the gsxr after the first day of riding it ... but it's a nice bike with a great suspension to let me know what it's really like to ride compared to gunning it in the straights (although i will miss that part, ill just wheelie instead )

It won't feel as fast because almost the entire rev range is the power band, so you won't feel the kick in the pants. It can be misleading. Twins are also more forgiving if you go into a turn a gear high, you still have the torque to pull out of it without falling flat. You'll like it.

gs500 sv650 etc etc etc. ninja 500.you could start on a 600 but you wont really be "riding" the bike as everyone says just surviving which is true. you dont want to start off with something with too much power bc well we're men and we do dumb shit on them.

He'll be another step in proving Darwinism. The SV650 is quite the all around bike. They sound mean with a pipe and from what I hear, make excellent track bikes. I don't know how easy they are as a first bike, but it definately won't become boring nearly as quickly as the 500s.[Edited on November 22, 2005 at 8:49 PM. rode the hawk about 250 miles today and 3 refills later im back home haha.. the small gas tank does suck.harley riders and crotch rockets alike wave at memet an r1 at a light and i walloped him.. jk.. but he did say nice clean lookin bike as a i was likin his r1we rode for a lil he did a rolling burnout other than that he had huge chicken strips on his tires oh well.i was tailing a bmw and some kind of ducati tourer for about an hour that was a lot more fun than the time i tailed the 2 valkarie or whatever crusiers on some back roadsi was leaning in one turn and hit a bump causing the ass end to get air born but the bike planted right back down and i was ok after that whew lol...yeah topspeed is only 110 dont ask me how i know could really use a 6th gear.

Hawk is a fun bike...you can REALLy toss it around. I kind of wish I had one to play with. That and a Kawi EX500 and a BMW R1100RS and a Honda CBX and a Kawi Concours and a Yamaha TDM850 and a Triumph (triple; I don't know the latest models) and a Suzi TL1000R and a Suzi SV650.And probably a handfull of others; I really like vintage Japanese standards and BMW's. Maybe a Duc or an Aprilia or a CLASSIC Agusta MV4...

A mature person can start on a liter bike and not get hurt. It's all in self control. The argument about throttle in turns makes sense, but again, if you can control how much you want to twist the trottle, you'd be all right. I guess the way I see it is it will take him a while to get really comfortable with it, but if he went through 2 other bikes before a 1000, total time might not be much different.I wouldn't start on a brand new 11k liter bike myself, and very few people I know have enough self control to stay out of trouble(I know I don't), but saying that this guy will kill himself is out of line.
