I'm trying to buy Christmas gifts for some of my friends' kids, and although I know what the girls will be getting, I am clueless about what the boys will like (ages 6-10). Thus far the only ideas I've come up with are Star Wars themed T-shirts or hoodies. What other themes are a hit with the kids this year? And what gifts are the safest (legos, tees, etc) that they won't dislike?PS: What size T-shirts do boys that age wear? I'm so confused. Thanks.[Edited on November 21, 2005 at 3:24 PM. Reason : .]

^ Since their mother is dreading having the birds and the bees conversation with them, that doesn't sound like such a bad idea, she'll thank me

legos maybe, toys are us gift card
11/21/2005 3:32:26 PM
You should just ask the mother what they are into...

Are they directed towards kids? Will it be too much work for you to repost them here? ^4 Actually I know exactly what their interests are...Wolfpack Sports, Canes, Star Wars, Surfing, etc etc. But they have enough of everything in those themes, thanks to the grandparents. So I need fresh/unique ideas now.[Edited on November 21, 2005 at 3:42 PM. Reason : trouble typing today]

Barnes and Nobles book gift certificate. This holiday, give them the gift of reading.

^ ditto to that
11/21/2005 4:32:58 PM
Yeah, I'd thought about that. Maybe I'll use small BN gift cards as stocking stuffers.

You could ask their mother. I'm sure she knows what they want/need/wear.I always hated when people got me clothes for Xmas. They were never really what I wanted.

Where do they get ideas to make toys like that?
11/21/2005 5:07:49 PM
give them the birds and the bees talk for their mother!
11/21/2005 5:30:10 PM
I think they have an idea about what goes on there. The other day the 9 year old goes "<myname>, how do gay people have sex?" Maybe I should answer that in detail (with pictures and all) for Christmas
11/21/2005 5:34:26 PM
Spongebob anything? Thomas the train? Lego stuff? GI Joe stuff? Hot wheels or matchbox cars?

you should give their mom the book It's Perfectly Normal by Robie Harris (illustrated by Michael Emberley)that should help her with the "birds and the bees" talkat least take some of the dread out of italso, What's Happening To My Body? is a good book for such things when they're a little older

how conservative are the kids parents?some people really don't want their kids to know the facts of life (which happen to include contraception and *gasp* homosexuality)here's the link on Amazonhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0763624330/104-0836997-5841517?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance
11/21/2005 5:54:13 PM
^Actually that's not a bad idea at all. Maybe in a year or two they will be ready to get such a gift from me. Their mom is super cool, but her estranged ex is just the opposite...he may send a hitman after me if I go with any of those crazy gift ideas above
11/21/2005 5:57:05 PM
an illustrated kids book on sexuality is crazy? It's Perfectly Normal is intended for kids in their age groupthe What's Happening To My Body? series, I feel, is a little more sophisticated

My lil bro is 11 and he loves transformers, beyblades, the how things work books (and other gross science books like http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=CX0V8OZBJl&isbn=0670036749&kids=y&itm=4) and dvds

^ im not seeing that as an effective means to deter a police state
11/22/2005 6:31:33 AM
It depends if the police state can see the bb coming out. Gotta account for the wind and everything.I dug mine out of the attic the last time I was home. It's the funnest damn toy I've got right now. No cat is safe (not that it'd break the skin or anything)

Legos, board games, etc. How about both of: Something that they can enjoy but also learn from, and a mindless toy?
11/22/2005 9:49:52 AM
You know the problem with legos is, once they build that thing up for the first time, they break it down and then those little buggers are flying all over the house and the dogs keep choking on them, so I'm definitely not going with legos. I definitely need to find some cool board games, I may have to make that trip to Toys R Us after all. Thanks for those links OEPII1, pretty cool stuff.

Hey megameg, what other books (or types of books) does your brother enjoy? I'd like to give them books that they will be excited to pick up and read.[Edited on November 22, 2005 at 10:24 AM. Reason : grammah]

If they like legos and board games, how about Mouse Trap? You get to build stuff and play the game.

Barring a gun, books would be awesome if they are written about something they're into. gg.
