There's a danger of blood clots whether you be on the patch or the pill. However, the patch causes more hormones to get into your system (no filtering like the pill), hence the risk is higher. Or something along those lines.

My sister uses the patch, and she thinks it's great. Her one complaint would be that it makes the area where you put it a little sore, so you should move it around every month (keep it in the same spot for the whole month though). As the others said, it is a higher dose of hormones directly into your blood stream (since the Pill is digested it breaks it up a bit) so there is a higher risk of blood clots. It can get a little bit dirty since you where the same patch for a week, but it saves on the hassle of remembering to take the pill at the same exact time every night. The website is great, and has a lot of good information on all of the Ortho McNeal products.

the patch can give you headaches for a few days when you put your first patch on for the month.

I was on the patch for 2 years. I have a feeling it will be pulled from the market soon but we'll have to wait and see. New studies have been released that say the patch can release 60% more estrogen in the body than originally thought. Any amount of estrogen increases the risk of blood clots, but 60% higher than a normal birth control pill has made many women (young) die from blood clots in the brain and strokes. After this was released I set up an appointment with the doctor to make a switch. She said she had this talk 4 times already that week (Tuesday) and they are taking people off of it.

I thought it was a great idea. Worked well for me but the new information concerns me and I've chosen to go on the pill.

i was on the patch for a year and a half. it did get kinda dirty since it stayed in the same spot, and i gained some weight with it. i would say try the nuva ring. that's what i'm on now and i love it so much more than the patch.

glad I found this thread. I had ovarian cancer and both ovaries removed. I use the patch to provide hormones I otherwise wouldn't get. This prevents me from going into menapause at age 22. This news is not good news! Looks like I will be calling my doctor up for a new prescription.

I was on it for a few months, til it made me bat-shit CRAZY. I mean, CRAZY. I've never had PMS, but I damn near about killed some people when I was on the patch.

The nuva-ring was ok, but makes me nervous having all that hormone-soaked plastic or whatever right in there... makes me worry about cancer and shit. And it was uncomfortable for... other people.

So, yeah...

I tried the patch for a month and went back to pills. I would soak in the bathtub and it would start peeling off. There was always stuff around it from the lint in my clothes. I got into the routine of taking my BC every morning with my vitamins and it's not a big deal to remember anymore.

My wife has had it for 2 years now since we had our son. It works great. She has gained a couple pounds but I don't know how much of that I would actually blame on the patch. You don't have to keep it on the same spot for a month straight, but it does make the area right around it look...fun when you take it off. Just need to take it off when you get in the shower. I personally love it as I don't have to worry about her remembering to take a pill at the same time everyday (she's real bad about forgetting to take meds) and I don't have to worry about condoms, pulling out, or any crap like that. And I don't even notice it on her skin.

Danger of blood clots is aggrevated by smoking and stress and can cause serious problems in even the healthiest girl if the above two factors are added in. I'd prefer pills because I don't like the aesthetic results of the patch, and now there's a health risk added that makes that decision even easier. Make it routine and you won't have a problem with the pill.

I considered the patch, but I know I'd mess with it all the time...I don't even like wearing Band-aids. I'm on the pill, and I love it. I put a reminder on my phone about taking it, on the off chance that I'd forget it (I'm good about remembering anyway)...and that's been good b/c it ensures I'm taking it at exactly the same time.

And for the black square.. good cleaning will help that.. it does the same as any other gluey thing like bandaids.

And a more gentle way to remove it is with babyoil, just an fyi.

i went on the patch for a few months last year because it was cheaper than the pill on my insurance and i liked the idea of not having to worry about it but once a week

terrible terrible.... i got chemical burns on my skin from where the patch was, i gained weight and the effects of the hormones was crazy

i switched back to the pill real quick and have been happy ever since... glad i got off the patch when i did considering all the reports coming out.

I haven't read this thread so excuse me if I'm repeating anything.... But they just did a study and the patch gives you 60% more estrogen than the pill and you are more likely to get blood clots and stuff. Me and my roommate both gained a bunch of weight on the patch, but lost it like 3 months after we stopped. the only plus (I don't know if this is scientifically correct) was that you can decide when you get your period... I'm not sure if that's safe to do, but I know lots of people who used it for that. Talking to the ppl in the health center, they seemed to think it was my fault I was gaining weight, but I don't know anyone who was on the patch who didn't.

I had an allergic reaction to the adhesive on the patch. It basically blistered my skin where the patch was, itched like hell & left scars.
I'll also agree with weight gain & making you crazy. Of course, no two people react the same, but I have never felt so insane & unlike myself in my life. I am not an emotional person, nor do I suffer from PMS.... and when I was on the patch both were HUGE issues.
I'd rather have a kid, or bleed for 12 days straight, than have to feel the way the patch made me feel.

I tried it, it was really convient BUT it made me feel REALLY REALLY sick esp. the first 2 days of a new patch. I couldn't do it for any longer than 2 months.

do yasmin, that seems to work the best with the least amount of problems.

You can do that with any pill that isn't tri-phase.

I've been on it for 2 years now and I've never had any complications resulting from it. It's pretty convenient.

That said, I think I'll be switching to something else after reading this thread and the related article.

Unfortunately there have been other people that came near to death (and probably some that died that I don't know of) from just birth control medications in general. It's the risk of blood clots that is the main culprit. Smoking and stress both contribute to increasing the risk.
