I bought an emachines from Best Buy a few years ago for around 600, been a pretty good little machine. but I'm not a gamer, but like Josh said, what are you wanting to do with it?

no gaming really. just standard shit. cds, dvds, schoolwork. want something that will last a decent amount of time

sounds like you dont need shit. buy something cheap if you are not gonna use it for games. if you wanna watch DVDs though, get yourself a 19 inch LCD. i like em.

spend 500 on a system, and 300 on a nice LCD mon if all you are using it for aside from the basics is watching DVDs

Go shopping next Friday ... they have TONS of systems listed for around/below that price. Otherwise, check slickdeals.net often for the "Dell Home" deals ... most Dell systems on sale cost about what it would cost to buy the individual pieces/put the system together ... convinience is a good thing.
