you need start up cash to pay the nerds that will end up doing all your work.

it's hard, hence the reason an entire INDUSTRY exists to do this.

"how hard is it to get a site up and going": This depends on how much knowledge and experience you have with getting a site up and going. If you are only trying to get traffic for the purpose of selling advertising, why would you need online payments? You can accept online payments in a lot of ways.. You can use a 3rd party to handle the transaction such as Paypal or 2checkout. Or you can use your own script with SSL and an online gateway for authorization (such as authorize.net). If you are serious about this, PM me. But, you may want to re-think your plan/strategy. There are lots of people out there also trying to drive traffic and get visitors.

thnx^ for the advice. i think im better understandings things. i agree that a lot of people are in the business of moving internet traffic, but i think i have an unique idea that will both draw traffic and give incentive to look at the advertisers. i know how to make web sites (links,text,pics,ect)...just not nice looking ones. assuming 3rd party stuff like paypal is simple once i pay for the service, i should be able to handle everything myself. i just dont understand how you know if you have enough bandwidth -- like if i register a site for $10 a month, what happens if i start generating tons of traffic? do you pay more? what if i need to update the site every 3hrs or so. i want it to be static, but ill need to republish some text every few hours as new purchases are made.if i use a remote server, am i free to do that?[Edited on November 18, 2005 at 12:41 AM. creating a semi-nice looking web site requires a lot of knowledge. It's worth paying THOUSANDS just so you wouldn't hafta learn it yourself. And that's probably what you'll end up paying for something updated frequently.
11/18/2005 1:00:42 AM
do you really mean that? thousands?
11/18/2005 1:36:07 AM
Try more like tens of thousands for a custom app. A simple IDEA doesn't mean a simple implementation. And even it is all super simple, it's still going to require a shit ton of time and knowledge to develop a safe, secure and production ready solution.

Yeah, a serious website that'll net business either takes a CSC degree or a lot of money to pay someone who does.
11/18/2005 2:48:16 AM
^, ^^Pretty much on the money. You need somebody who KNOWS how to do a visual layout, somebody who can do the information management on the site, and somebody who is technically competent to make a backend/handle things like credit card payments. Having all three be the same person is great, but difficult to find.Initially, you can get your website hosted, and get most of the technical things taken care of. Initially, you can cheat and find some templates to go off of for the visual layout. However, if you think your website is going to grow, better to do the research early before you won't have a chance to in the future.[Edited on November 18, 2005 at 6:33 AM. Reason : .]

yea ive gotten started with a domain and host and im finding out that the problem isnt gonna be the visual stuff. though im not saying im an expert with HTML ... im saying im sure i can figure it out if i spend a week doing my homework. and im sure ill be able to get a little traffic without spending money, the idea is for the buzz to do its own advertising from that point on.the problem is gonna be whats needed from me for each sale. ill need to approve each contribution for content to keep the concept of the site in check. and ill need some way to delay the actual sale until i approve the specific purchase.

You are not going to be able to do this right by yourself, you will need to hire somebody else. If you hire an actual business to do this you will not make it out for less than $2000. More likely you're looking at triple that, maybe more.
11/18/2005 8:14:41 AM
i'd DESIGN if for you for $2,000 given that it's reasonable in scope (40 hours @ $50 an hour is a bargain) after i finish up the one that i'm working on now...company that does a few billion in business each year kind of comes first on my listyou're going to have to pay somebody else to build it though, i don't like to screw around with code unless it's something i'm going to use and need it coded specifically for SEO[Edited on November 18, 2005 at 9:49 AM. Reason : i would move on this now, if it's really a good idea, somebody else is going to do it within 60 days]

^yea do either of those and you will be left with a shit ass broken site and be out the same amount of money as you would have doing it right in the first place.
