So I bought my first song from itunes and wanted to put it into my sony mp3 player. however the song downloaded as a m4p or some shit. wtf is this i just want a straight up normal mp3 file. What services (other than gay itunes) will give me a no bull shit, no restricted, mp3 song for .99 or less?

What kind of mp3 player is it?

If it doesn't play wma-drm, most music stores won't work with it (except allofmp3.com ).

and they all have restrictions. be sure your mp3 player will work with your store before you purchase. they're not all interoperable.
ALL of the stores will give you some gay ass protected file. All of them. (except for allofmp3, but that's not American, if we were putting that restriction on our criteria in the first place...)

^^ yeah, that too... make sure you're allowed to transfer it to a portable device (some stores have 2 fees, one to listen on your computer, one to transfer/burn it).

Because a player that has 75% market share absolutely must play what other obscure players play.

Razor blade model...learn the business term then tell me if you really think Apple isn't making its money on music. The iPod is just a more high-tech handle...the songs are the blades.

^^Because they don't have the right to distribute those songs. They just decided to give themselves that right.

its like if i decided to put my songs online and charge people for them. just because i charge money for them doesnt mean they are legal for you to download

^ No, but as stated above, Russian Copyright law is....strange. And very very different from ours.

I would imagine that for russia, what they do is legal.

Now the question then becomes, is it illegal for a consumer in the us to buy from the russian company, if they comply with russian laws and it's all online.

That, i have no clue.

to the person who said "burn it to cd, then re-rip it". you do realize that makes it a 2nd generation compressed file right? each time you rip something you "lose" audio information that can NEVER be regained. you want to do that TWICE, no less? lol.

as annoying as the Soviet Russia jokes can be when overused...they always seem to be funny. kinda like "ur mom" jokes.

Yes. Everyone here is aware that re-ripping only creates more loss in a file.
But it's also the only sure-fire, 100% way to convert an iTMS DRMed M4P file into any other format. (well, I guess plugging a wire from your speaker port into your microphone port and recording it that way, but that's really really gay)

^ true dat. but like someone else mentioned Jhymn is a great program for stripping that pesky DRM. too bad they havent updated it for iTunes 6 yet. bleh!

i would buy some songs too if it weren't for that actually. nothing pisses me off more than DRM.

I've had my share of business classes thanks, but seiourly apple make little $ from the songs the VAST majority of it goes to the record companies apple makes just a few cents per song and considering they're hosting it and providing the software and development their margin is razor thin... the only songs they stand to make any $ on are the indie songs

well what I did was i played the song and used Audacity to record it using "stereo mix" for my input selection. So basically I recorded it as it passed through my audio card. Quality is a bit worse but still not that bad and I don't really listen to music that loud anymore. Still a shitty experience and definately not worth $0.99 although it was easy to buy the song as it downloaded in about 15 seconds on TWC

allofmp3.com is nice becouse you pay fir bandwidth used, not per song. If you want low quality mp3, songs are cheap. If you want high rate lossless, you pay a little more. But at only 2 cent per meg of transfer, its easy. Be warned, once you downlaod a song form them, you can no longer download it without paying for it again. So you pay EVERY time you download a song, but at 6-10 cent a song, its worth it.

just because something is legal in Russia doesnt mean it is legal here. Hell, I could probably buy a rocket launcher from russia but that doesnt mean it would be legal to own in the US. You might as well pay to be using Kazaa or something if you use allofmp3.

the main difference is that the riaa can't do SHIT about allofmp3.

they can't plant downloads, they can't track who's downloading what.

so your argument, like yourself, is a piece of shit.

allofmp3:
Secure
Safe
NOT UNDER RIAA JURISDICTION
multiple encoding types to choose form, as well as song bitrates.
HUGE selection
Entire albums, with correct names, vrs random misnamed bad quality songs. Thus no more having that one song from an album that nobody liked enough to rip
