not that your response will help me diagnose your machine in any way, but is it a Touch-Sensitive scroll wheel or on that actually moves?

it's the wheel that actually moves (i think only the newer models have the touch sensitive ones)so to make it work i have to really push hard on it and it only registers on the left sidethe top (menu) button is also brokenand in the last 10 minutes, the back button stopped working too

I believe that version of the iPod had an issue with the wheel and gunk getting up underneath it. A reason why they went to the touch-sensitive wheel instead.Site to check out:http://www.jasonball.com/techbytes/2004/09/how_to_disassem.html Warns that he hasn't tried the instructions himself though.

wow, First Generation. They stopped selling those in July 2002.I think you're gonna have a tough time getting that thing repaired without taking it to the Apple Store. (And even then it would probably be a bitch.)It's very possible that there's just dirt beneath the wheel, like ^ posted. Disassembling it yourself is gonna be the cheapest way to go...

oh...so bringing it to the barn with all the dust probably wasn't the best idea i guess

Yep, that deserves the busted face. Such a great face, have wished it was on the IM programs many a time.If it's just dust though, a can of compressed air might do the trick.[Edited on November 15, 2005 at 5:06 PM. Reason : asdf]

And knowing Apple, it will cost $299 to fix it.
