dvd5 = single layer dvd (<= 4.36gb)dvd9 = dual layer dvd (>4.36gb)dvddecrypter (for dvd5s straight to ISO or to rip dvd9 to files for use in dvd rebuilder pro)dvdfab platinum (for dvd5s when dvddecrypter hangs on certain new dvds)ahead nero burning rom (for burning dvd files not in ISO format after doing professional recompression)dvd shrink (for no recompression, but when it's a dvd9 and you can cut extras and/or end credits, audio, etc to make it fit to dvd5)for recompression, only when you want the best quality (dvd rebuilder pro using CCE. one click backup and best possible recompression)you can, of course, use something other than dvd rebuilder pro. check doom9.net for professional solutions if you don't mind the extra time to encode and care about the best quality.

dvd shrink + nero

have to disagree.....dvd x copy express is actually a GREAT program which is a ONE BUTTON duplicator. it even burns the cd. its the best and easiest no bullshit copier if you just want a back up. ive copied over 35 dvd's using this program the only catch is that the company is out of business so its hard to get it.dvd shrink is also great but it takes a little longer (about 1-2 minutes to set up the burning process). however it has a built in burner (using nero if installed) so it also is pretty quick. the only advantage shrink has over dvd copy express is that you can actually take out portions of the dvd easily (like french/spanish audio tracks) so that the compression for the actual movie is better. personally i dont see much of a difference if you give 150mb more for just the movie which is why i kind of prefer dvd x copy express..ALSO NOTE that you should always burn with 4x MEDIA. even if you use a 8x dvd-/+r dvd x copy will still burn at 8x even if you specify to burn at 4x. so basically you must use media that is 4x max otherwise you'll get a choppy copy

why will you get a choppy copy at 8x? i just burned a cd using the dvdxcopy and it worked wonderfully at 8x.
