you're thinking of a bouncer
11/14/2005 3:08:21 PM
yeah but no. im not that big i just want to check ids and tell people to leave when they get to shit faced

If you can't fill both roles, you might have trouble. The best way to find out though is to start going to places and asking around.

that's what a bouncer does.

your best bet probably is working at a restaraunt that has a bar then - go try tripps or something

Your best bet is bar-backing. Toting out cases of beer and other supplies for the bartenders. You won't really learn shit about bartending while you're working the door or bouncing. I've done both, but the only bartending I've gotten to do was beer and wine only when I worked at the Five-O (back when you were popping zits on your face and jerking off to the lingerie section of the Sears catalog).Working door is only cool because of all the folks you meet. Of course, you end up pissing a lot of folks off because you either (a) won't let them in with a fake, (b) won't let them in because they're under 21, or (c) card them when they are obviously older than you.I just worked door at Tir Na Nog for the first time this weekend, and what sucks most about this job is dealing with all the bums that live across the street in Moore Square.

I started off as a door guy/bouncer...then barback...then bartender. The bar I went to didn't need a barback at the time, but they did need a door guy...so there it was.Try to get a job barbacking...but if not, then look for a door guy/bouncer position, then just mention (after working there for a little while) that you wouldn't mind barbacking. I was also working at a beach bar, so I didn't need to be huge...but I was pretty big for my size. We didn't have a lot of fights at my bar, so the major responsibilities of the bouncer was to walk around picking up empty beer bottles and glasses, making sure nobody was damaging anything, making sure nobody was throwing up, and escorting the person out who could barely walk or was starting trouble. And for someone's earlier question...barbacks get tipped out by the bartenders.

That's how it was at the Fitty.

being a bouncer is the single greatest job i nthe world. i loved it. hell now i have a real job in law enforcement and i find myself wanting to moonlight as a bouncer. not as an off duty officer but as a bouncer. i loved it so much.

how hard is it to get a bartending job around here? i've been a bartender at the restaurant where i work here in ky, but i'm moving back to nc and would like to bartend a couple of nights a week somewhere...how hard is it to find a bar that's hiring?

i started out as a door guy, then moved in to bounce the floor. and then i quit because of all the smoke. i dont miss working in the club scene at all! 2 years was plenty of bouncing for me. have fun. winter time and being a door guy sucks from what they guys we had would tell me.
11/14/2005 10:39:18 PM
you have to be able to make someone leave when the get shitfaced and tell you to make them leave. not a good fit for a smal guy. When it gets to that point it usually ends up bad.^ and yea, the cig smoke is terrible. I would wake up with cig smoke hangovers the morning after. as bad as any beer hangover and harder to shake. ^^I always had a tough time throwing guys out. Never got much respect as a 5'8" door guy. But door guys do have the advantage of the fact that they are completely sober and aware...while the guy being thrown out is shitfaced and out of it. There are also a few tricks that work no matter how big the guy is. I say I had a tough time because the guys always gave me shit when I tried to throw them out (while being calm as shit when the 6'3" 250lb dude was taking them out), but I still never got roughed up. One time I thought I was in trouble because I was standing in between two monsters (rule #1 of being a door guy, never try to get in between guys...that's when you get hurt...just pull them away from the outside), but our 6'6" 275 lb bartender cleared the bar and helped me out.^^^^^I also really miss the bar scene. Being the door guy was awesome because you did the least amount of work, still got paid pretty decent, got the most interaction with the females, and got out a lot earlier than the bartenders and the barbacks. But working behind the bar was still the most entertaining and the pay was great. I'm missing it just talking about it. I'm in law school right now taking the first semester off when it comes to working...but I think I'm going to get back into some bar work after New Year's.[Edited on November 14, 2005 at 11:21 PM.
