http://www.pandora.com/
-search for by your favorite song or artist and it'll create a radio of music that is very similar, probably by bands you've never heard of, a very good service

http://www.last.fm/
-download a plug-in and it'll keep track of all the music you listen to and then will compare that to people who listen to similar music as you and recommend new artists, have found some good music off of it but it's useful just to see you're listening habits too

http://www.cdbaby.com/
-an online store that sells music by independent artists, has a good section of music based on mood, style, or whatever, if it's recommended then it's going to be good (assuming you like the genre)

http://www.allmusic.com and http://www.amazon.com/
-of course everyone has heard of these but the similar artists links sometimes find really good stuff, but sometimes it's not that close and doesn't provide an easy way to listen to the music

these sites are a little more genre specific to what i like, acoustic, singer/song writer, folk, indie

if you click on only one link, make sure to check out http://www.pandora.com/!

pandora is a fucking joke. they promote particular bands, that have little to do with what you like (that i'm sure are giving pandora some cash in some way).

"Q: My station just played two artists that I never thought would go together. How can that happen?

At the Music Genome Project, we treat each song as a totally unique musical performance. We don't have a pre-conceived notion of what the artist usually sounds like, or how they're usually categorized - in fact we're really trying to avoid that. What matters is the song itself. We carefully listen for all of its elements; everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and all things vocal, and use that to build the playlists.

Since we never pigeonhole artists, and since artists often record in a variety of styles, you'll see some surprising bedfellows. But you will also hear a much broader and more interesting mix - all centered around your favorite parts of the musical universe."

i really doubt pandora is trying to promote certain bands, ha some of those bands are so random and obscure they probably don't have any money to give to pandora nor do their labels (if they even have a label)

That pandora thing isn't too bad. They played The Cure when I typed in Codeseven. Two of my fav bands, even though I don't think they're really similiar.

http://www.music-map.com/ Type in the name of the artist, and it arranges names of other artists you might like (not necessarily sounding similar, but most of the time they do) in a type of web. Wait until they stop moving.

yeah, I've found it works best to pick out a specific song that you like instead of an artist, it really works on a song to song basis and not artist to artist so much...
